District collector flags off awareness walk in Thoothukudi
Organised by the Department of Health and Family Welfare, the initiative aims to encourage the public to adopt walking as a daily habit for better health. As part of this initiative, the awareness walk was conducted in Thoothukudi.
The walk commenced from St. Mary's college on the north coast road and covered around 8-km passing through key locations such as Mattakadai, Boobalarayapuram, Karuppatti Society Junction, before concluding at the starting point near St Mary's college.
A special medical camp was also organised along the route for the benefit of participants, which was later visited by Mr. Elambahavath.
Thoothukudi District Superintendent of Police Albert John, Thoothukudi Deputy Director (Health) Yazhini and others took part.

Health and Wellness centres inaugurated in Thoothukudi and Kanniyakumari
Chief Minister M.K. Stalin inaugurated Primary Health Care centres (PHC), Urban Primary Health Care centre (UPHC) and Wellness centres in Thoothukudi and Kanniyakumari district on Thursday. In Thoothukudi, urban wellness centres were inaugurated in Athimarapatti, Caldwell Colony, Silverpuram and Pandarampatti, under the jurisdiction of Thoothukudi corporation at a cost of ₹25 lakh. Similarly, urban wellness centres in Oorani street and Subramaniyapuram under Kovilpatti municipality and Pandagasalai in Kayalpattinam were also inaugurated. Additionally, a PHC constructed at a cost of ₹1.20 crore in Sivagnanapuram village in Vilathikulam union was also inaugurated during the event. In an event held at the Panadagalasalai area of Kayalpattinam, Collector K. Elambahavath lit the ceremonial lamp and distributed nutrition kits to pregnant women. In another event held at Calwell Colony, Minister of Social Welfare and Women Empowerment P. Geetha Jeevan lit the ceremonial lamp and inspected the facilities. Thoothukudi Mayor Jegan Periyasamy and Corporation Commissioner Banoth Murugendar Lal were present. Similarly in Nagercoil Corporation, the Chief Minister has inaugurated a UPHC in Peruvilai at a cost of ₹2.45 crore and five urban wellness centres in Krishnancoil, Housing Board, Puthan Bungalow, Iluppaiyadi Colony and CTM Puram, each at a cost of ₹25 lakh. Kanniyakumari Collector R. Alagumeena, who lit the ceremonial lamp at Peruvilai UPHC, said that around 50,000 people residing in different areas around Peruvilai region would benefit through the UPHC. Nagercoil Corporation Mayor R. Mahesh, Colachel MLA J.G. Prince and other officials were present at the event.

Thoothukudi Collector stresses importance of first aid awareness among public
Thoothukudi District Collector K. Elambahavath emphasised the importance of first aid awareness among the public, during emergencies, while addressing the gathering at the inaugural session of Tamil Nadu Accident and Emergency Care Initiative's First Responder Training on Basic Life Support (BLS) and Early Trauma Management. The event was held on Thursday at the Thoothukudi Government Medical College and Hospital (TKGMCH). The session was aimed at educating police personnel, fire and and rescue service officials, teachers, school students and volunteers on providing first aid to individuals affected by unexpected accidents or medical emergencies in public places. Speaking at the event Mr. Elambahavath said, 'In most of the emergency incidents, people immediately reach out for ambulance services. However, very few people's first instinct would be providing first aid during that crucial time.' He added that the training session has been organised to raise awareness about handling those situations, including the correct way to administer first aid and safely assisting the persons in cases like bone fracture. The Collector mentioned that such an awareness programme could be life saving during emergencies. He explained that police officers, fire and rescue service personnel, teachers and students, are often the first responders in schools, roads and other public places, and therefore should be equipped with basic first aid knowledge. 'Though police and fire and rescue service personnel may already have some training in first aid, this programme is updated to align with current advancements in medical care. Similarly this training should also be given to volunteers and frontline workers, who play a crucial role during disasters,' he added. The training session was conducted with a practical demonstration by a medical team led by Nirmal Kumar, Head of Emergency Medical Department at the hospital. The training will now be conducted on the fourth Thursday of every month at the hospital. G. Sivakumar, Dean of TKGMCH, Silas Jeyamani, Resident Medical Officer of TKGMCH and other medical staff were present.

Karnataka reconstitutes expert panels to revise healthcare package rates, private hospital norms
BENGALURU: In a move aimed at bringing uniformity and transparency to state-run health assurance schemes, the Karnataka government has reconstituted an expert committee to recommend standard package rates for medical services offered at participating establishments. The committee's primary task will be to evaluate healthcare costs and recommend uniform rates to be applied across public and private hospitals under government-supported insurance and assurance schemes. The effort is expected to reduce pricing disparities, improve access to quality care, and streamline reimbursements under schemes like Ayushman Bharat and state-run insurance programmes. 'The committee has been formed and the latest proposal highlights the need to revisit and update the existing package recommendations. Based on this, the government has formally amended the relevant rule and reconstituted the committee accordingly,' an order dated June 10 said. The newly formed panel will be chaired by the Additional Chief Secretary or Principal Secretary or Secretary to the Department of Health and Family Welfare. The committee includes key health administrators such as the Executive Director of Suvarna Arogya Suraksha Trust (SAST), the Health Commissioner, the Medical Education Director, and a representative from the Finance Department not below the rank of Deputy Secretary. A senior official from Sri Jayadeva Institute of Cardiology will represent tertiary public healthcare institutions. Govt forms panel to review private healthcare standard In addition to government officials, the committee also includes non-official members from institutes such as the Indian Institute of Public Health (IIPH), IIM-B, among others. To ensure uniform standards across private healthcare institutions in the state, the state government has reconstituted an Expert Committee to review and recommend norms for classification, infrastructure, staffing patterns and staff qualifications in private medical establishments. The reconstitution follows a proposal from the Health Commissioner who sought a revision of the committee's non-governmental members. The comm ittee will be chaired by the Health Commissioner and include senior officials from the Departments of Health, Ayush, and Medical Education. It will also have representatives from NIMHANS, PHFI, Indian Medical Association, and other bodies. The panel is tasked with reviewing and updating existing norms related to the classification of institutions, required infrastructure, staffing patterns, and minimum qualifications for medical personnel, in line with the Karnataka Private Medical Institutions (Amendment) Act.
