Ungaludan Stalin camp in Thoothukudi receives over 3,200 petitions in a day
Thoothukudi District Collector K. Elambahavath on Thursday said that a total of 3,205 petitions were received on July 16, during the 'Ungaludan Stalin' special grievance redressal camp held across Thoothukudi district. While inspecting the third day of the camp, at Aringnar Anna Marriage Hall in Thoothukudi, the collector highlighted the significance of the initiative. 'Ungaludan Stalin' is a huge outreach programme for the people of Tamil Nadu, where officials from all key departments come together at a single location to deliver government services and resolve public grievances efficiently and directly. The camp offers 43 services from 13 government departments in urban areas and 46 services from 15 departments in rural areas. These include essential services, welfare schemes, documentation support and others. On July 16, a total of 811 petitions were received from the rural areas, 504 from Municipal areas and 1,315 from the urban areas. Additionally, 1,890 petitions were submitted under the Kalaignar Women's Grants Rights scheme. Mr. Elambahavath noted that most of these petitions will be processed and resolved within 45 days. However, approximately 522 petitions involve long pending issues that may take more than 45 days. All petitions received during the camp are being digitally registered to ensure accountability, transparency and proper follow-up. He urged the people to make use of these camps to address their grievances.

Farmers' raise concerns over renovation works disrupting cultivation in Thoothukudi
Farmers in Thoothukud district have voiced their concerns during the monthly grievance redress meeting, stating that the ongoing renovation works in water bodies are affecting the crop cultivation, even though water has been released for irrigational activities. The meeting held at the district collectorate was chaired by Thoothukdi Collector K. Elambahavath. During the meeting, the collector addressed various grievances submitted by the farmers. At the meeting the farmers requested to organise an agricultural exhibition in Thoothukudi district. They also urged the immediate release of funds for crop damage caused by December 2024 floods and compensation for chillies and shallots, which were damaged during the 2023 floods. They noted that Vilathikulam and Sivagnanapuram region farmers still await the compensation. The farmers further highlighted the integrated plan to control weed in rainfed areas. They demanded an increase in the procurement price of milk and to hike the salaries of the milk cooperative society employees. In addition, they called for uninterrupted supply of quality seeds and fertilizers, and urged the withdrawal of requiring a CIBIL score for issuing agricultural loans. A request was also made for the establishment of a storage facility at Melachekkarakudi for storing black gram, green gram and maize. Framers suggested that government-subsidised hybrid coconut saplings, which are said to yield higher income, should be demonstrated on fertile lands with farmers taken for exposure visits. Addressing the grievances Mr. Elambahavath said that agricultural exhibitions are conducted at zonal level. This year, it is scheduled to be held in Tirunelveli, and farmers from Thoothukudi district will be invited to participate. The assessment of the December 2024 flood related crop damage has been completed and a proposal sent to the government, which includes ₹59 crore for agricultural crops, ₹14.6 crore for horticultural crops and compensation for banana crops damaged by gale in the last April. Relief for crop damage during the 2023 floods is still pending and is expected shortly. He added that assessment will be conducted to control weeds in rainfed areas and things such as milk procurement price, reducing rental charges of agricultural equipment are under government policy decisions. If special schemes are introduced, efforts will be made to offer concessions to farmers. The Collector further noted that the delay in water release at some places was due to essential renovation works and has advised the PWD officials to plan such activities. Measures will be taken in the future to prevent such delays and ensure that any infrastructure work disrupt any farming activities. Officials from Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Department, Horticulture Department, Public Works Department were amongst those present.

Harvesting of cage cultured Asian Sea Bass begins at Sippikulam
The harvesting of cage-cultured Asian Sea Bass in the Integrated Multi-trophic Aquaculture (IMTA) system at Sippikulam began on Wednesday. The harvest was undertaken by the Kadaviraal group (name of the local fishermen group), organised by ICAR-Tuticorin Regional Station of Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (ICAR-TRS of CMFRI). The project was funded by the National Bank of Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD). The event commenced with the flagging off by the District Collector K. Elambahavath, following which the fish were harvested by the local fishermen. During the harvesting process, the grown ups were harvested in three batches, totalling a production of 420 kg, with average weight of each fish ranging between one to two kg. This partial harvesting approach was adopted to promote the faster growth of smaller fish and to generate income at regular intervals. At the event held after harvest, Thoothukudi Collector K. Elambahavath lauded the fishermen and exhorted them to continue with the IMTA farming. He emphasised that the IMTA model offers multiple income streams and ensures steady market supply. He also stressed the importance of sustainability in such activities for long term benefits. The Joint Director of Fisheries and Fishermen Welfare, Thoothukudi N. Chandra, highlighted the State government schemes aimed at socio economic development of fishermen. Ms. Chandra also elaborated on the advantages of the IMTA system, which supports the combined culture of seaweed, mussels, crab and fish. T. Bhuvanesh Ram, Assistant Collector (Training), L. Loveson Edward, Senior Scientist and Scientist-in-Charge ICAR-TRS of CMFRI, R.K. Suresh Ramalingam, DDM, NABARD Cluster, Thoothukudi, officials from forest and fisheries department and scientists from ICAR-TRS of CMFRI were present at the event.

Delay in issuance of community certificates affects tribal students
The members of 'Periyariya Unarvalarga Koottamaippu' submitted a petition at the weekly grievance meeting on Monday, urging the swift issuance of community certificates to the members of Scheduled Tribes Kattunayakkan community. A petition submitted by the Periyariya Unarvalargal Koottamippu's district coordinator Paul Prabhakaran stated that the members of Kattunayakkan community live in various parts of Thoothukudi district underprivileged conditions. Many students from this community are unable to continue their education due to the non availability of caste certificates. More than 100 individuals from areas such as Eral, Udangudi, Megnanapuram, Sathankulam, Tiruchendur and Alanthalai have applied for community certificates for their children's education, but have not yet received them. The petition urged the authorities to take immediate steps to issue caste certificates to the Kattunayakkan community members, considering the future of affected children. Another petition submitted by residents of Madathur village near Thoothukudi submitted a petition at the collectorate stating that around 300 youth from their village had been employed at the Sterlite Copper plant. Following the plant's closure, they lost their livelihoods and have been facing severe hardships. Citing the expert committee recommendations, that 'green restart' of the Sterlite Copper plant, with a more sustainable approach to production, they requested the government and district administration to take steps to reopen the Sterlite Copper plant using eco-friendly methods. The public grievance redressal meeting was chaired by Thoothukudi District Collector K. Elambahavath. Additional Collector (Development) R. Ishwarya, District Revenue Officer A. Ravichandran and other officials were present at the meeting.

AI training programme launched for government school students in Thoothukudi
In a significant initiative to introduce Artificial Intelligence (AI) training to school students in Thoothukudi district, Lok Sabha MP Kanimozhi has launched an AI training programme at Government Model School in Vallanadu on Monday. The initiative, organised with the support of NavGurukul Organisation, Anudip Foundation, JanSoch, Google and Asian Development Bank, is also being implemented in three other government schools in the district including Government Girls Higher Secondary School in Kovilpatti, S.M. Girls Higher Secondary School in Tiruchendur and Government Higher Secondary School in Kayalpattinam. Speaking at the launch event, Ms. Kanimozhi emphasised the role played by AI in the current world. 'We are moving forward in a way that we cannot even identify what is generated by AI and what is not.' AI technology was becoming an inevitable part of society.' She pointed out that AI tools such as Chatgpt had made tasks much easier compared to other platforms and had significantly saved time in the creation of various essential outputs. Stressing the importance of early exposure, she said AI training had already been introduced in schools across the world. Addressing the students, Thoothukudi Collector K. Elambahavath said the training programme had been planned for the past three months, during which the need for AI education was carefully evaluated. 'By the time you complete your higher education, in various technologies that govern this world, AI technology will be a significant one.' He exhorted the students to take full advantage of the opportunity and explore the vast possibilities of AI. Ottapidaram MLA M.C. Shunmugaiah, Thoothuudi Corporation Mayor Jegan Periyasamy, Chief Education Officer Ganeshamoorthy and others were present at the event.
