Sanitation workers given welfare assistance in Sivaganga

The Hindua day ago
Through the Tamil Nadu Sanitation Workers Welfare Board nine sanitation workers were provided with ₹96,000 worth assistances during an event here on Friday.
Thippampatti V. Aruchami, Chairman of the Tamil Nadu Sanitation Workers Welfare Board, said, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has ordered for allocation of ₹60 crore to the board.
He made a point that unlike other departments, the unutilised funds from the board could not be diverted for any other purposes. 'The fund will be exclusively used for the welfare of the sanitation workers,' he added.
Through the board, the workers have made requests to conduct grievance redressal meeting periodically and to increase the monthly wage to the workers, he noted.
Also, Government Order 62, mandating minimum wages for National Urban Livelihood Mission (NULM) temporary sanitation workers, should be immediately implemented, said Mr. Aruchamy.
Other requests like increasing the overseas education assistance up to ₹35 lakh for children of sanitation workers were made to the board, he noted.
'The board also instructed the workers to utilise the safety gears provided to them. They were also directed not to get into any manholes even when someone asks them to,' he added.
He said, as per the district administration's plea, the board would work towards providing five robotic machines for manhole cleaning purposes.
In the last four years in Sivaganga district alone, ₹6.4 lakh worth welfare assistances were provided to about 127 sanitation workers that included educational assistance, death compensation and safety gears, he said.
District Collector K. Porkodi, Manamadurai MLA A. Tamilarasi Ravikumar, among others were present during the event.

Chief Minister Stalin wanted to challenge the Waqf (Amendments) Act in SC: MP Wilson

DMK Rajya Sabha Member P. Wilson on Saturday said amendments to the Waqf Act brought about in 1995 were sufficient, and the BJP's decision to form a committee and its actions were 'oppressive'. Speaking at the 'Save Waqf, Save Constitution' panel discussion organised by the All India Muslims Personal Law Board (AIMPLB), he said Chief Minister M.K. Stalin passed a resolution in the Assembly when the Waqf (Amendments) Act, 2025, was introduced in Parliament. 'Only the BJP opposed the resolution and staged a walkout from the Assembly. The BJP has betrayed the Muslim community and the AIADMK has formed an alliance with them. When the Bill was sent to a Joint Parliamentary Committee, the DMK appointed two of its MPs, A. Raja and M.M. Abdullah, who travelled across India for over nine months and participated in consultative meetings and opposed the amendments. The committee's objections were given in writing, and we caused a ruckus in Parliament. We debated it for 15 hours, and it was passed early in the morning. We voted against it,' he said. He added that the Chief Minister M.K. Stalin had said that the Waqf Act should be challenged in Supreme Court. 'After it was passed in the Rajya Sabha on April 4 and became an Act on April 5, we filed a case against it on April 7.' Former Madras High Court judge Justice D. Hariparanthaman said the latest Waqf Act amendments should be compared to the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Act and compared to the rights available to the majority community. 'Section 104 of the Waqf Act which says that anyone can donate to Waqf... has been removed. Now, not even a Muslim can donate but he/she should have been a Muslim for five years. Does HR and CE Act have such a section? A Muslim, Christian, Jain is not prevented from donating to the Mylapore temple. This is the first act that prevents donation. All powers of the Waqf Act are being taken over by the Central government,' he said. R. Vijayasankar, former Editor, Frontline, highlighted the role of the media in spreading hate against Muslims and underlined the lack of representation of Muslims, Scheduled Castes and Other Backward Communities within mainstream media. Advocate A. Arulmozhi, retired IAS officer G. Balachandran, and Rahmathunissa, member, AIMPLB, also participated.

VCK hopes to convince DMK govt. to enact law against caste hatred crimes

The Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi is hopeful that it could prevail upon the DMK government to enact a legislation to deal with crimes driven by caste hatred in the next Assembly session, against the backdrop of the recent murder of a Scheduled Caste youth, Kavin Selvaganesh, in Tirunelveli district. Earlier, Chief Minister M.K. Stalin had contended in the Assembly that existing laws were adequate to deal with such crimes. VCK sources said the party had been working diligently behind the scenes to convince the DMK leadership to enact a special legislation. At the same time, a section felt the State government was lenient in implementing laws to protect the Scheduled Castes, and wondered why the DMK didn't think of the community as a 'vote bank' like the OBCs. VCK general secretary D. Ravikumar told The Hindu that while the DMK government had introduced significant development schemes that benefit the Scheduled Caste communities directly and indirectly, it cannot ignore the constitutional duty of protecting them. 'The government has ensured development of Scheduled Castes in terms of their education and encouraging entrepreneurship. It has created infrastructure, introduced scholarships for Dalits, and these schemes will have a long-lasting impact. It has also introduced entrepreneurship schemes such as Dr. Annal Ambedkar Business Champions Scheme, besides reserving government contracts for SCs. Even reserved Panchayats have their own special schemes for development. Other welfare schemes – Magalir Urimai Thogai, free bus travel, Pudhumai Penn – overwhelmingly benefit Scheduled Castes and Most Backward Classes,' he said. However, he felt development without ensuring equality was pointless. Mr. Ravikumar said the continuation of atrocities and caste killings will stop the development initiatives of the State government. 'Economic or educational development may be a choice of the government, but the State government is bound to ensure equality constitutionally,' he said.
