The Uttar Pradesh Police has arrested 67 persons and detained eight minors in Prayagraj for vandalism after Azad Samaj Party chief and MP Chandrashekhar Azad was stopped from visiting Isota village, PTI reported on Monday.
On Sunday, police prevented Azad from going to the village to meet the family of Devishankar, a man who died of burn injuries on April 13. The police had cited security concerns. Devishankar's family has alleged that he was murdered.
According to the police, a group that had gathered at the village to meet the MP became agitated upon learning he would not be arriving. They started throwing stones and damaged two police vehicles.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Yamunapar) Vivek Chandra Yadav told PTI that action would be taken against the accused under the National Security Act and the Gangster Act. Compensation for damage to public property would also be recovered from the culprits as per legal provisions, the agency quoted him as saying.
Police are trying to ascertain the identity of other individuals involved in the incident using closed-circuit television footage, Yadav added.
The National Security Act allows the Centre or state government to order the detention of a person 'with a view to preventing him from acting in any manner prejudicial to the defence of India, the relations with foreign powers, or the security of India'.
It may also order detention to prevent them from acting in any manner prejudicial 'to the security of the State', the 'maintenance of public order' or the 'maintenance of supplies and services essential to the community'. The police and district magistrates have the power to issue detention orders, subject to approval by the state government within 12 days.

UP man loses ₹1 crore in 'digital arrest' scam with fake court hearings

Shahjahanpur (UP), Jul 2 (PTI) Uttar Pradesh Police on Wednesday arrested seven men who allegedly impersonated officials from the ED and the CBI to "digitally arrest" a Shahjahanpur resident and swindle more than ₹ one crore through a fabricated online court proceeding, an official said. The gang's modus operandi involved convincing the victim, 60-year-old Sharad Chand, that he was under investigation for an alleged illegal transaction of ₹ 2.8 crore, the officer said. The fraudsters allegedly first contacted him via phone on May 6, posing as ED and CBI officers. Then they escalated the deception by impersonating a judge and conducting fake virtual hearings through WhatsApp for almost a month, according to the police. Digital arrest is a term used in cyber frauds where victims are falsely told they are under surveillance or legal custody through digital means. They are often isolated via continuous video or call surveillance by fraudsters posing as officials, and manipulated into following instructions without alerting others - often leading to extortion or fraud. Shahjahanpur Superintendent of Police Rajesh Dwivedi told PTI that during these "virtual hearings", fake lawyers and judges allegedly intimidated Chand, ultimately coercing him into transferring ₹ 1.04 crore across 40 bank accounts belonging to nine alleged "advocates." The victim, associated with an NGO, did not inform anyone at the time of the "digital arrest" but reported the matter to the police once he realised that he had been conned. During the investigation, police discovered suspicious transactions of ₹ nine crore in a bank account linked to the case. That account is also under scrutiny, Dwivedi said. Those arrested have been identified as Sachin, Prashant, Gautam Singh, Sandeep Kumar, Syed Saif, Aryan Sharma, and Pawan Yadav - all aged between 20 and 28 years. They have been booked under sections 318 (cheating), 319 (cheating by impersonation), 204 (impersonating a government official) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), and sections 66(c) and 66(d) of the IT Act. All have been sent to jail, the police added.

BJP, RSS planning to remove ‘socialist', ‘secular' from Constitution, says Rajasthan Cong chief

His remarks come in the wake of a much discussed comment by RSS second-in-command Dattatreya Hosabale advocating that the words 'secular' and 'socialist' in the Preamble of the Constitution be reviewed. He said public attention is being diverted from important issues through such tactics to 'polarise'. Jaipur, July 2 (PTI) Rajasthan Congress president Govind Singh Dotasra on Wednesday launched a sharp attack on the BJP and RSS, accusing them of planning to remove 'socialist' and 'secular' from the Constitution. Congress leaders have slammed the BJP and the RSS over Dattatreya's comment while Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar and Union minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan have spoken in support of his demand. Speaking at the state Congress headquarters here on Wednesday, Dotasra said, 'They (BJP-RSS) have never accepted the Constitution and democracy. Now they have decided to remove socialism and secularism from it.' 'When Dr BR Ambedkar drafted the Constitution, these people burned its copies. RSS had never even accepted the national flag. Today, when people are asking the prime minister questions on real issues, BJP and RSS are trying to distract them by communalising the debate.' He said that people have understood such tactics and will not be misled by them. Dotasra also targeted the BJP government in Rajasthan over the controversial sub-inspector recruitment case, claiming double standards. 'When our government was in power, they said that 400 sub-inspector posts were fake. But now in power, they haven't cancelled the recruitment and are telling the high court they can't cancel it,' he said, alleging that the so-called cabinet sub-committee decisions merely reflect the chief minister's will. Dotasra further alleged that the BJP has used the Kanhaiyalal murder case in Udaipur and the so-called 'Red Diary' controversy to mislead voters before the last election. Criticising governance under the BJP, Dotasra claimed officers in Rajasthan were being forced to do 'non-important' work instead of focusing on their departments, and blamed excessive review meetings by the chief minister, which he said undermines the administration's efficiency. 1.7 tonnes ‘beef' seized, 178 eateries & slaughterhouses raided, 196 arrested

Guwahati: Police have seized more than 1.7 tonnes of suspected beef during raids on hotels, restaurants, and slaughterhouses, and detained 196 people for violating the govt's prohibition on the beef public service and consumption in public spaces. The crackdown has been underway across the state since Tuesday. The enforcement was carried out under the Assam Cattle Preservation Act, 2021, which restricts cattle slaughter and beef sales in regions predominantly inhabited by Hindu, Jain, and Sikh communities, as well as within a 5-km radius of temples or satras. To reinforce this law, the state cabinet last year banned the serving of beef in any restaurant, hotel, public function, or public place. Inspector general of police (law and order) Akhilesh Kumar Singh told PTI that authorities launched a statewide operation on Tuesday to investigate reported cases of unlawful cattle slaughter and unauthorised beef sales in restaurants. Police said raids were carried out across 178 hotels, restaurants, and slaughterhouses in various districts of Assam over two days. The crackdown has come after chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma raised concern last month over illegal cattle slaughter during Eid celebrations in the state. On June 20, Sarma emphasised strict enforcement of the Act across all districts to prevent the availability and consumption of beef near religious sites.
