Delhi speaker demands apology from Congress chief over lavish bungalow allegations

NEW DELHI: Assembly Speaker Vijender Gupta on Monday sought an unconditional apology from Delhi Congress chief Devender Yadav, who alleged that more than Rs 2.35 crore had been spent on the Speaker's official residence, bungalow No. 9, Shamnath Marg, including Rs 94.69 lakh solely on the renovation of toilets and bathrooms.
In a letter, Gupta stated, 'Regarding your statement alleging exorbitant expenses on the renovation of the Speaker's residence, in which you mentioned that Rs 2.35 crore was spent, including Rs 94.69 lakh on bathrooms and toilets, it is reported that you even referred to the Speaker's residence as 'Shauch Mahal'. You also mentioned the location as 9, Shamnath Marg, which is not the official residence of the Speaker.'
The letter further said that the Speaker condemned and completely denied these claims. He added that such statements made to the media without verifying facts should be avoided.
'He has directed me to inform you that you must withdraw your statements and submit an unconditional written apology to him within three days of receiving this letter. He further emphasised that, as a former Member of the Delhi Assembly, you should uphold the dignity of the Speaker's office and not use it for political point-scoring,' the letter added.
The Delhi Congress chief had earlier accused BJP leaders of misusing taxpayers' money for a lavish lifestyle, while Delhi residents face unbearable heat, frequent power cuts, and a shortage of drinking water.
Yadav claimed the ruling leaders' royal lifestyle is being funded by public money, dubbing the Speaker's bungalow as 'Shauch Mahal,' much like he previously called CM Rekha Gupta's residence 'Phoolkumari Niwas.'
Yadav also alleged the use of costly tiles, showers, fittings, and basins, with Rs 94.93 lakh spent on electrical work and Rs 44.82 lakh on other beautification and repairs.

Odisha to launch State-level ‘Panchayat Puraskar'

Bhubaneswar: Taking a cue from National Panchayat Awards given by the Union government, the Odisha government has unveiled its own State Panchayat Puraskar initiative to encourage excellence among panchayati raj institutions. Speaking to mediapersons, Panchayati Raj Minister Rabi Narayan Naik said the move is aimed at strengthening grassroots governance, enhancing livelihood opportunities and ensuring inclusive development across the State. The Panchayati Raj Minister further said the State government has allocated Rs 4 crore for the implementation of the scheme. The awards, to be introduced from 2024-25, will identify the best-performing panchayats across multiple indicators and categories. Based on performance under Localised Sustainable Development Goals (LSDGs) in nine thematic areas, the top three Gram Panchayats and Panchayat Samitis will be awarded at the State level. The minister also said the top three Gram Panchayats in each of the nine LSDG themes will receive individual recognition. Each district will identify the top three Gram Panchayats demonstrating best performance under LSDGs, who will be given monetary prizes. Similarly, the top three Gram Panchayats at the block level will receive Token Certificates of Appreciation. The panchayats performing exceptionally in flagship areas such as MGNREGA, Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, Jal Jeevan Mission, Good Governance, Skill Development, Income Generation, Online Auditing and Women's Participation will be selected for the awards. The award amount will range from Rs 1 lakh to Rs 25 lakh, depending on the level and performance category. Naik emphasised that the selection process will be data-driven, impartial and transparent, ensuring fair recognition for outstanding performance. 'The objective is not just to reward good work but also to set examples that can be replicated across the State,' he said. He further said: 'Through this initiative, we aim to encourage innovation at the grassroots, empower local governance and promote community-sensitive administration. 'The country will develop when the Panchayati Raj System is strengthened. So, we are working on the principle of 'Viksit Village and Viksit Odisha',' added Naik.

Stalking accused Vikas Barala dropped as law officer in Haryana

The Nayab Singh Saini-led BJP government on Monday dropped Vikas Barala from the post of assistant advocate general for Haryana, ten days after he was appointed, after a row erupted over his appointment and his alleged involvement in the 2017 Varnika Kundu stalking case. Barala did not join following the controversy that erupted after the notification on the appointment of law officers was issued on July 18, senior officials confirmed. Vikas Barala On Sunday, 45 retired IAS officers wrote an open letter to Saini against the decision to appoint Barala, who is the son of Rajya Sabha member and former Haryana BJP chief Subhash Barala. 'We are shocked to learn that a stalking accused has been named AAG by your government. He will work as the state legal officer when he himself is on the wrong side of the law. By appointing him, you have gone against Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Beti Bachao slogan', the letter read. Earlier, reacting to his appointment, complainant Varnika Kundu termed it a reflection of the 'values and standards' of the authorities. Varnika, 36, the daughter of retired IAS officer VS Kundu, posted on Instagram, 'Appointing someone to a public position of power is not just a political decision, it's a reflection of values and standards. Despite months of national media attention, it has dragged on for this long with little progress. Although we seem no closer to a conclusion than we were five years ago, I continue to hold faith in the judiciary until the verdict is announced, but I won't deny that faith has wavered.' State's advocate general, Pravindra Singh Chauhan has told PTI that 'Vikas didn't join (assume charge)'. 'Generally, there is a timeframe of a week to ten days given, but if anyone does not join by then, we inform the government accordingly,' the AG further told the agency. Barala, was among over 100 law officers whose appointments were notified on July 18 by the government as assistant advocate general at Delhi office of the AG. The appointments are made by a 'selection committee' under the Haryana Law Officers (Engagement) Act, 2016. The criminal case against Barala, was registered on August 4, 2017, under Sections 354-D, 341, 365, 511 and 34 of the Indian Penal Code when Varnika, then a disco jockey (DJ), was allegedly stalked by Vikas and his friend Ashish. She was headed home when she noticed a car following her. The two accused allegedly attempted to block her path and tried to enter her vehicle. Sections of attempted kidnap were added after criticism of police functioning. Chandigarh police filed a 200-page chargesheet in the case on September 20, 2017. A district court framed charges on October 13, 2017, and trial began on October 27, 2017. Ever since, though there have been over 100 hearings in the trial court, they have been repeatedly adjourned on various grounds. In February this year, the case was transferred to the court of judicial magistrate first class where it is currently being heard. It will next come up for hearing on August 2.

Op Sindoor marked new milestone: Baijayant

Bhubaneswar: Senior BJP leader and MP from Kendrapara constituency, Baijayant Panda, on Monday said Operation Sindoor marks a new milestone in India's response to terrorist attacks as it became the first country to strike 11 airbases of a nuclear-armed nation. In his speech during the debate on Operation Sindoor in Lok Sabha, the BJP leader said on Monday: 'New Normal in India's response and new milestone as India is 1st country to strike 11 airbases of a nuclear-armed nation, destroying 20 per cent of Pakistan's air force. We responded first with a surgical strike, then the Balakot Air Strike…we struck with Operation Sindoor.... Operation Sindoor is not a reaction; this is the Modi Doctrine.' The senior BJP leader took a swipe at the Opposition, expressing disappointment that the Opposition has not yet questioned Pakistan's repeated failures or the attacks carried out by them against India. The way India has been responding to any terrorist attack under PM Modi is the 'New Normal', he said. The Kendrapara MP stated that the difference between the actions taken in response to past attacks and the current policy under Prime Minister Narendra Modi clearly indicates that Operation Sindoor-type responses to terrorist attacks have become the new normal.'Opposition has pointed out that whether there was any pressure on India, I will like to clarify that any country can make a suggestion (India only stopped hostilities after Pakistan requested),' added Panda. He questioned the Opposition's silence on Pakistan's absurd claim regarding the absence of terrorist camps in the neighbouring to Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi's allegations, Panda said: 'It's amusing that he questioned when India will take back PoK and used terms like 'bowed down' and 'surrender.' It was highlighted, that how many times Congress itself has surrendered in the past.' The BJP leader also criticised Congress leader Rahul Gandhi saying that the Leader of the Opposition have been talking about China's drone but never talked about the success of indigenous Indian weapons. He also asserted that Indian claims regarding the targeting of Pakistani terrorist bases are backed up by solid satellite images unlike false narratives peddled by Pakistan. The BJP leader noted that post Operation Sindoor, India received 61 messages from heads of governments, heads of State and Vice-President. The Kendrapara MP noted that recent honours conferred on PM Modi by different countries is not a personal honour, but an honour to the nation. Targeting the Opposition, he said: 'We are People of peace but not Prisoners of it.'
