Happy Valley role born out of fear, Sarah Lancashire says
Her decades-long 'brilliant and intangible' working relationship with writer Sally Wainwright influenced her role, but fear was key to her performance.
Discussing the role at Windsor Castle on Tuesday, after being formally made a Commander of the British Empire (CBE), Lancashire told the PA news agency: 'That was just born out of fear, abject fear, of feeling quite off-piste.
'Literally it was a leap of faith, jumping off the cliff at midnight in the dark.
'But knowing that somebody has the confidence in you and the belief in you – she (Wainwright) is deeply persuasive as an individual, which I absolutely, really admire, I'm very grateful, always.'
Lancashire's breakout role came as fan-favourite barmaid Raquel Watts in Coronation Street, which she played for five years until 1996, appearing in more than 260 episodes.
She and Wainwright first met when they were 'cutting their teeth' on the soap opera.
The duo later collaborated on the BBC drama Last Tango In Halifax, for which Lancashire won her first Bafta in 2014 for her supporting role.
They worked together again on Happy Valley, which ran from 2014 to 2023.
Asked what spurred the terror of playing Sergeant Cawood, Lancashire told PA: 'The setting of it, being asked to play something which I had no knowledge of at all – absolutely no knowledge.
'And knowing that the level of research that was available to me was going to be quite limited in the time available.
'But in actual fact – as she (Wainwright) always said – it wasn't a procedural drama, it was not a police drama, it… was a family.'
She spoke about performing during a conversation with the Princess Royal at the ceremony at the Berkshire royal residence.
Anne told her that she had briefly acted while at boarding school, Lancashire said.
The actress told PA: 'We were really talking about performance, and how she'd done a little bit of this when she was at boarding school.
'I think they all had to go onto a stage at some point and it can stand you in very good stead for future roles in life, no matter where it takes you.'
Being a professional actor 'is sort of clinging on for dear life', she said.
'It never changes. Very often as an actor you're swimming against the tide whilst standing on shifting sand.
'You feel that you may have some sort of trajectory but then the industry changes, because the industry is ever-evolving – every 10 years, you'll find yourself in an industry which is slightly different, requiring something different from you.
'So you're never secure, there's never a moment where you can be complacent, at all.
'It's sort of a clinging on for dear life, you just hope that you can stay with it.'
Her relationship with Wainwright was pivotal in fighting that tide.
She said: 'Having known her (Wainwright) for a very long time, decades, and just meeting someone whose voice you admire so much.
'Who knows why… there's an alchemy, that just works. It's a wonderful thing when you find it, not that I was looking for it, but it just happens – that's a tremendous thing.'

Coronation Street's Carla 'makes Becky discovery' as she vows to get Lisa answers
Coronation Street viewers will see Carla Connor come face-to-face with baddie Logan Radcliffe next week as she's determined to help partner Lisa Swain move on after past trauma Carla Connor is on a mission next week on Coronation Street, with a new spoiler preview revealing she's determined to get answers about Becky Swain. Judging by the spoiler clip she could get to the bottom of it all, as she appears to make a discovery about Becky, the late wife of her partner Lisa Swain. Lisa has faced turmoil recently, forced to confront her past and the death, in the line of duty, of her wife Becky. She died years earlier, and Lisa and daughter Betsy Swain have struggled to move past it. So when questions were raised earlier this year about whether Becky could have been in trouble and may have been a corrupt officer, Lisa's heartache and the questions surrounding her death escalated. New information about what happened to her and possible new suspects sent Lisa on a downward spiral that she's still moving on from now. It's gotten to a point where Lisa has to know the truth, and she's digging away. Betsy has also had a go at figuring out whether her mum Becky was actually on the wrong side of the law, and now it's Carla's turn. Seeing Lisa struggle with therapy and with people looking into Becky's case, Carla is desperate to do something. So she decides to visit Logan in prison, just like Betsy did months earlier. It had been claimed that Logan and brother Matty were behind the wheel of the car that killed Becky in a hit and run. With questions about whether there was more to her death and what Becky may have been secretly involved in, it's clear Logan knows more than he is letting on. So when Carla asks for answers, she's left coming to her own conclusion after a hint from the prisoner. She asks Logan: "Are you gonna tell me about Becky or what?" Logan taunts her though, no doubt teasing he could drop her in it with Lisa. He says: "Does Swain know you're here? T ake that as a no. So you wanna know the truth about backhand Becky?" Carla is aware of what he's just called her, and takes this as the biggest clue yet that Becky was in fact dodgy and Logan knows all about it. So does Logan know what went on back then and what led to Becky's death? Carla asks: "Are you saying she was dodgy?" Logan then tries to backtrack and suggests he was referring to her tennis skills, smirking which tells Carla everything she needs to know. She adds: "Was she a bent copper or not Logan?" Scheming Logan says: "Maybe, then again maybe not." It's then he makes it clear he is "open to negotiation" and wants paying for his information. Carla asks how much, but the clip ends before we hear any more about what he wants or what he knows. But could Carla get the details Lisa so desperately needs, and will the truth about Becky finally be revealed? Coronation Street star Jack P Shepherd's lavish wedding revealed as 'no expense spared'
Coronation Street actor Jack P Shepherd's wedding plans have finally been revealed just before he prepares to say 'I do' to his fiancée Hanni Treweek in front of his soap co-stars Jack P Shepherd is ready to say 'I do' to his fiancée and has made sure no expense has been spared to make their day perfect. The Coronation Street actor, 37, is set to marry Hanni Treweek this weekend in a lavish ceremony. They met on the set of the soap and got engaged in June 2024 while on a Tanzania safari trip. While on Celebrity Big Brother earlier this year, Jack revealed his plans to marry Hanni this summer. He managed to keep most of the details under wraps as he previously told the Mirror: "The wedding is this year. We're very excited. It's all done. "It's all paid for. It should be a really good day actually. I love a wedding. Absolutely love a wedding. Weddings and funerals." Now, it has been revealed that Jack is set to tie the knot at Manchester Cathedral surrounded by his Corrie co-stars. "Jack and Hanni are having their big white wedding at Manchester Cathedral on Saturday," a source told The Sun. "They have gone all out to make sure it's their dream day and there has been no expensed spared." They added: "It's a very grand setting getting wed at the cathedral, and it will be packed with guests, including many of Jack's Corrie co-stars." Jack and Hanni will then reportedly entertain their guests at the five-star Lowry hotel for their after party. The actor has soaked up the wedding planning, yet he did reveal one part he would leave out. He didn't have a stag do and didn't want one. A few months ago he admitted: "No, I don't like the idea of going on a stag do where someone just takes the p*** out of you all weekend and you're the butt of every joke and you have to dress up like a f***ing baby.' Hanni did have a mini hen party, however, as she headed for lunch and cocktails at The Ivy with her pals. She sipped on a 'Bride' straw while her mates donned masks with Jack's face on. "The non hen party party, two weeks before the wedding," Hanni shared. "25 years of a special friendship with these beautiful girlies, how lucky are we. "I love you all so much, thank you for throwing me a non hen party party it was perfect. The next time I see you I'll be walking down the aisle." The bride-to-be has also made sure the couple are dancefloor ready for their big day as she revealed they have been taking dance classes. She shared a snap of the pair in a dance studio and teased: "Hungover but dancing through as Mrs Shepherd to be." Hanni and Jack have been dating since 2017 and they decided to go public a year later. During an appearance on Loose Women, the couple discussed their future plans, including marriage and children. Hanni said: "I think we fell quite quickly and from that we just clicked, and we were on the same page, and you do have those conversations but yeah I think we would like to... in the future."
