It's not all bad for the Aces. Wilson recently surpassed 5,000 total points, and did so in fewer games than anyone in league history.
Elsewhere, Jackie Young has bumped up to the best scoring average in her seven pro seasons, and Chelsea Gray is still efficient behind the arc on career-high volume (37.3 percent, 5.0 attempts per contest). Becky Hammon's group has the fewest fouls in the W and enjoys a positive free-throw differential. And … that's about it.

Across the past six seasons, the dynastic Aces have two championships, a third Finals appearance and three semifinal finishes. They've been a surefire staple for this current era of women's hoops. Yet these Aces arrive in the desert with a paltry 7-8 record, ranking ninth out of 13 teams in points for and points against. They're also ninth in net rating, spoiling six consecutive years of top-four marks there. Kiah Stokes has been a non-factor as the fifth starter, and the entire bench rotation is shooting below 40 percent.
Six-time All-Star and 2023 scoring champ Jewell Loyd was supposed to slide right in as Kelsey Plum's replacement. She's maintained her assist-to-turnover ratio and is still on point from long distance (41.7 percent in her first 15 Vegas games), but her 2-point struggles are almost hard to process (35.3 percent, worst among all regular 2025 starters).
Phoenix, meanwhile, has been an all-out challenge for the rest of the sport. The Mercury have won six in a row behind brisk pacing, shoot-at-will tempo and disciplined defense. They've wholly dominated turnover differentials, leading all teams in takeaways, and four of their players crack the top 20 in defensive rating.
The offense funnels into Sabally. The German-American big is up to a career-high 19.6 points per game while playing out-of-her-mind defense down low. The engine runs through Alyssa Thomas, the league's leading initiator at 9.5 assists per game. It's not often that an established 12-year veteran with multiple All-WNBA nods improves her output, but Thomas has career-best numbers in assists and field goal percentage.

Sabally had only played with Dallas before joining Phoenix in the offseason. Thomas did 11 years in Connecticut before her free agency move. Much props are in order for second-year head coach Nate Tibbetts and GM Nick U'Ren. With Kahleah Copper reintegrated from her knee injury, the Mercury are harboring real title aspirations in their first staging without Diana Taurasi or Brittney Griner.
Best player to wear both jerseys: Danielle Robinson. She was a three-time All-Star with the San Antonio Silver Stars, the previous iteration of the Aces franchise, before a respectable 2017 season with Phoenix. Robinson then got to don the Vegas threads in 2020, when she was a crucial bench guard for the team's Finals run.

Sophie Cunningham questions WNBA's expansion choices
Hours before the Indiana Fever's 74-59 win over the Minnesota Lynx to capture the WNBA Commissioner's Cup on Tuesday night from Minneapolis, Minn., Indiana guard Sophie Cunningham questioned the league's recent choices for expansion markets. On Sunday, the WNBA announced expansion to 18 teams. The WNBA revealed it had awarded expansion franchises to the cities of Cleveland, Detroit and Philadelphia. That trio joins the Golden State Valkyries, who tipped off play in May of this year, and Toronto and Portland who will begin play in the 2026 season. Cleveland would begin play in 2028, followed by Detroit in 2029 and Philadelphia in 2030. Cunningham wasn't too keen on a pair of the WNBA's expansion choices. "Yeah, you would think that you'd want to try to get more of the country engage in the WNBA. I totally get kind of having the brother team of having the NBA side, because it is helpful. You just get more perks, there's more opportunities, and so I get that aspect. "But, I also think you want to listen to your players, too. Where do they want to play? Where are they going to get excited to play and draw fans? And I do think that Miami would have been a great one. Everyone loves Florida. Nashville is an amazing city. Kansas City, amazing opportunity. There's a huge arena downtown that no one's using. And I think that the women's soccer league is showing that people draw," Cunningham said. The 6-foot-1 guard was also wary of the league expanding too fast. "And so, I'm not so sure what the thought process is there. But, at the end of the day, you also want to make sure that you're not expanding our league too fast. I think that that's also another thing that you don't want teams to totally dominate and then have teams that aren't. "I just think that it's kind of a hard decision or situation. But, man, I don't know how excited people are to be going to Detroit or (Cleveland)," Cunningham said. While it will be the first WNBA franchise to call Philadelphia home, both Cleveland and Detroit have had WNBA teams in the past. The Cleveland Rockets played from 1997 until 2003, when they ceased operations. Meanwhile, the Detroit Shock existed for 12 seasons, from 1998 to 2009, during which it captured three league titles (2003, 2006, and 2008) in four WNBA Finals appearances before relocating to Tulsa and ultimately Dallas. These remarks sparked a social media firestorm in both Detroit and Cleveland, as the two passionate sports fan bases rushed to rebut the Fever guard's statement. Most notable among the Detroit pushback was the actual City of Detroit, which responded by noting the Shock's top-five ranking in league attendance for five straight seasons, topping the charts in three campaigns, and setting a single-game attendance record of 22,076 fans in the playoffs. The city also referenced the historic fan turnout for the 2024 NFL draft as a reason to believe the same enthusiasm will return when their expansion team begins play in 2029. On the Cleveland side, the City of Cleveland clapped back at Cunningham's remarks by sharing a video of fellow Indiana teammate Caitlin Clark praising the city's entertainment scene and sports culture while attending the 2024 Women's Final Four as a member of the Iowa women's basketball program. While Cunningham's thoughts on the league's expansion choices were bold, the sports world will have to wait a few more years to see whether her words hold any merit. This league's planned expansion in the three announced markets would need to be signed off by the WNBA and NBA Boards of Governors, but its approval does not appear to face any form of pushback. Yordan Alvarez injury update: Astros slugger to see specialist after setback in broken right hand
The Houston Astros are off to another dominant start this season. Entering play Wednesday, the team sits at 51-34 and holds a seven-game lead in the American League West. And if that wasn't impressive enough, they've been able to get there despite a lengthy absence from their best hitter. Yordan Alvarez has been sidelined since early May due to a hand injury, and it doesn't sound like he's going to be back soon. Advertisement Alvarez experienced a setback in his broken right hand Tuesday, and will see a specialist to try and solve the issue. After sitting for nearly two months, Alvarez started participating in workouts in June. He took swings at the team's complex Monday, but reported pain the following day. Astros general manager Dana Brown said the team wouldn't rush Alvarez back following the setback, per ESPN. "We're not going to try to push it or force him through anything. We're just going to allow him to heal and get a little bit more answers as to what steps we take next." It's a disappointing development for Alvarez, who seemed to be nearing his return. On Sunday, Brown expressed some optimism that Alvarez could return in time for the team's upcoming series with the Los Angeles Dodgers on July 4. The setback makes it extremely unlikely Alvarez will take part in that series. It also marks yet another troubling trend for the Astros' medical staff, which originally misdiagnosed Alvarez's injury as a muscle strain. The team experienced the same mistake last season, when star outfielder Kyle Tucker missed significant time after the team initially misdiagnosed his shin injury. Advertisement When healthy, Alvarez is one of the best hitters in the majors. The 28-year-old holds a career slash line of .295/.387/.573 over seven years in the majors. He won the Rookie of the Year award in 2019, is a three-time All-Star and has finished in the top-10 in MVP voting twice. He's also excelled when the Astros needed him most, and has a .294/.393/.551 slash line in 60 playoff games with the franchise. The Astros found a way to thrive despite Alvarez's injury. The team posted a .536 winning percentage in May after Alvarez went down, and followed that up by going 19-7 in June, propelling the Astros to the top of the AL West standings. Alvarez will undoubtedly provide a huge boost to the team once he's ready to return. That should be a scary thought to every other AL team, which has failed to keep the Astros down despite the loss of their best hitter.
