Pittsburgh Steelers veterans, rookies come together for 2025 OTAs
The week of voluntary sessions does not always see tremendous attendance, but there was a noticeable veteran presence at practice. Many of them say there's a lot of value in being there for mentorship and to shake the offseason rust.

'We've got a lot of new stuff that we're doing, a lot people in different places, a lot of new schemes. So, it's definitely exciting to be here right now,' said Patrick Queen.
One of the new faces is cornerback Darius Slay. He is entering his 13th season but says he still sees OTAs as an opportunity to get back to fundamentals and learn more about his new teammates. That includes establishing his role as a mentor to younger ones, like Joey Porter Jr and Beanie Bishop.
'Everybody has different stories, different mindsets. I just try to be an open book. Just absorb what they're talking about and give them information on what I've been through or how I got to this point. And they ask questions. That's the great thing about them,' said Slay.
Slay said his new relationships are progressing quickly. Some of the younger players are planning to join him in Houston for workouts this summer.

While guys like Slay and Cam Heyward are natural leaders for the team, others like Alex Highsmith are growing into more prominent leadership roles.
'Just to really influence young guys and show them the way of what it takes. When I got here as a rookie, I had TJ and Bud and Cam, having veterans like that in my room really helped me to progress in my career. I just want to do what I can to help the young guys progress in their careers as well,' said Highsmith.
Multiple players confirm that T.J. Watt was not at practice this week. He is due for a new contract. Highsmith said he knows Watt wants to be there and believes a new deal will happen for his counterpart.

The Steelers announced the deal Thursday that will keep Khan with Pittsburgh through the 2028 season. He was hired as the team's GM in 2022. 'We look forward to continuing that trend that will lead to even more success on the field.' Khan and coach Mike Tomlin are structuring their offense around Rodgers, the four-time NFL MVP who's returning for a 21st season. The 41-year-old Rodgers signed a one-year deal after a season in which Justin Fields and Russell Wilson combined to lead the Steelers to a 10-7 record and a playoff berth. To bolster the receiver spot, Pittsburgh acquired two-time Pro Bowl wide receiver DK Metcalf from Seattle. The Steelers quickly signed him to a five-year deal to bring some stability at the position. Earlier this week, the team acquired All-Pro cornerback Jalen Ramsey, Pro Bowl tight end Jonnu Smith and a 2027 seventh-round draft pick from the Miami Dolphins for All-Pro safety Minkah Fitzpatrick and a 2027 fifth-round pick. Advertisement The next order of business for Pittsburgh could be working out a new deal with star linebacker T.J. Watt. The four-time All-Pro and 2021 AP NFL Defensive Player of the Year is getting ready to enter the final season of the four-year extension he signed in September 2021. In April, Pittsburgh will host the NFL draft. The Steelers are scheduled to have a dozen selections to reshape their roster. A priority figures to be in finding a long-term solution at QB. Steelers sign GM Omar Khan to 3-year extension following flashy offseason
After an offseason full of roster changes, the Pittsburgh Steelers took a step toward maintaining stability and continuity in the front office on Thursday. General manager Omar Khan signed a three-year contract extension, the team announced. The deal runs through the 2028 season. With coach Mike Tomlin signed through the 2027 season, two of the Steelers' most influential decision-makers are now on the books for at least three seasons. Advertisement Khan, 48, joined the Steelers in 2001 as a salary cap expert and negotiator on the financial side of the operation. Over the next two decades, his voice and influence grew within the organization. Some of his early contributions included researching draft-day trades to establish a price to trade up for Troy Polamalu and negotiating Jerome Bettis' final deals. In the summer of 2022, the Steelers promoted Khan to general manager, replacing Kevin Colbert. The shift in leadership also brought a philosophical change to the Steelers. An organization that's traditionally been patient and conservative has become much more aggressive in all areas: in the draft, in free agency and with bold trades. Beginning in his first season, Khan made it clear he wasn't afraid to put his stamp on the Steelers, when he dealt receiver Chase Claypool to the Chicago Bears in exchange for what would become the 32nd pick in the 2023 NFL Draft. The Steelers used that pick on cornerback Joey Porter Jr., while Claypool's career fizzled. That trade is still considered by many to be one of the more lopsided wins in Khan's tenure in the command chair. Before picking Porter, Khan traded up from No. 17 to No. 14 to make offensive tackle Broderick Jones the first-ever draft pick under the new regime. Although the Steelers' coaching staff has yet to develop Jones to justify the move, the process was sound. By moving up, the Steelers addressed an area of need and did so with the last offensive tackle most evaluators considered worth a first-round pick. After Khan's first draft, Tomlin anointed the new GM the 'Khan Artist.' Over the subsequent seasons, Khan has continued to live up to that nickname, with aggressive wheeling and dealing while hiding the team's intentions publicly. As Khan settled into his new role, he wasn't afraid to move on from receiver Diontae Johnson. In uncharacteristic fashion, Khan and the Steelers also punted on quarterback Kenny Pickett after just two seasons (and after Khan said he had 'full faith' in the QB). That same offseason, Khan also traded for Justin Fields and signed Russell Wilson. Advertisement Not all of Khan's moves have paid off — receiver Mike Williams and outside linebacker Preston Smith made only minimal contributions as trade acquisitions last year — but the Steelers' GM has been willing to assert himself and evolve Pittsburgh's approach. More recently, Khan has made the Steelers the story of this offseason with several blockbuster trades and the signing of quarterback Aaron Rodgers. The busy stretch began when Khan acquired Pro Bowl receiver DK Metcalf from the Seattle Seahawks and then signed him to a handsome new deal. Given Metcalf's production over the years and his four-year, $132 million price tag, it's one of the flashiest outside additions in team history. A few weeks later, after repeatedly saying he wouldn't trade George Pickens, Khan dealt the mercurial receiver to Dallas in a polarizing move. Though Tomlin said publicly that Pickens needed to 'grow up,' the trade is still a gamble because of the receiver's outsized potential. Finally, just this week, Khan swung big again with another blockbuster trade. He dealt five-time Pro Bowl safety Minkah Fitzpatrick back to the Miami Dolphins in exchange for a pair of Pro Bowlers: defensive back Jalen Ramsey and tight end Jonnu Smith. There's no question Khan's philosophy has brought flash and excitement to the Steelers. But, just as significantly, they have remained unable to snap their now eight-year playoff drought. Moving forward, Khan's performance should be evaluated based on two main areas: Can he snap the playoff winless streak? And perhaps more importantly, can he find the next franchise QB after years of instability at the most important position in football? With a projected 12 draft picks in 2026, Khan should once again have a chance to build the Steelers in his image. It's also significant that Tomlin's contract expires at the end of the 2027 season, one year before Khan's. How much decision-making power will owner and team president Art Rooney II give Khan when it comes to the head coach, and what will Khan's recommendation be?

Aaron Rodgers says 2025 season may be his last: 'I'm pretty sure this is it'
Aaron Rodgers is preparing for one last dance. The quarterback has been debating retirement for years, which first surfaced around his famed darkness retreat. He said at the time that he went into the darkness 90% retired, later electing to be traded to the New York Jets. After two rough years with the green-and-white, Rodgers was released by the team, clouding his future once more. Advertisement During an appearance on "The Pat McAfee Show" on Tuesday, Rodgers revealed this will likely be his final season. "I'm pretty sure this is it (my last season)," Rodgers said on June 24. "That's why we just did a one-year deal. Steelers didn't need to put any extra years on that or anything. This was really about finishing with love and fun and peace for the career that I've had. I played 20 freaking years. It's been a long run and I've enjoyed it. What better place to finish than in one of the cornerstone franchises of the NFL?" It was an ugly breakup with the Jets after last season, but following an offseason of uncertainty, Rodgers eventually inked a one-year deal with the Pittsburgh Steelers to give it another shot in 2025. Advertisement The four-time NFL MVP made it a point that his final season isn't about proving people wrong, but rather to celebrate his love of the game. "It's not really, 'can't go out like this,'" Rodgers said, noting that it's more about his love for the game. "There's been a beautiful relationship. This is my first love when I was six-years-old dreaming about playing quarterback and being in the Super Bowl and winning the Super Bowl. I wanted to be all-in and I had so many other things going with my life that were taking my mind and my energy elsewhere. That's why I appreciated how Mike (Tomlin) was the entire time." Rodgers has been on a quest for a second Super Bowl victory, something that has eluded him despite being one of the game's best quarterbacks. As someone that has demonstrated a magnetic ability to draw headlines, Rodgers wanted everyone to know that he has no interest in living a public life. Advertisement "I didn't need this," Rodgers said. "I didn't need it at all. I don't feel the need to prove anything to anybody or don't have any chip on my shoulder that I need to hold onto. I don't want the attention, I know that's a narrative out there. When this is all done, you won't see me. I won't be in the public. I don't want to live a public life." If he decides to walk away following the upcoming campaign, the 2026 season will mark the first time in over 21 years that an NFL sideline won't feature Rodgers. Rodgers' career famously began with a draft day slide, falling to the Green Bay Packers with the 24th pick in the 2005 NFL draft. The California product spent three years as the Cheeseheads' backup to Brett Favre, before No. 4 departed for the Big Apple – ironically the same place Rodgers would leave for when his Packers career came to an end. Rodgers captured his first of four league MVPs during that 2011 season, stockpiling countless accolades over the years. A four-time All-Pro and 10-time Pro Bowler, Rodgers is still on the hunt for one more triumph in his final season. Playing in an era that featured other greats like Tom Brady and Peyton Manning, Rodgers' success, from a team standpoint, was never able to stack up. In terms of individual success, the current Steelers' quarterback stands amongst the best the league has ever seen. Rodgers now has one more chance to author his final chapter in the way he wants. And as someone that has always beat to his own drum, the future Hall of Famer will do it in a way that only he can – by being himself. The contract comes with $10 million guaranteed and can reach a maximum value of $19.5 million. Pittsburgh included $5.85 million in potential playing time and performance incentives, which Rodgers can hit if he remains healthy and effective. According to Spotrac, here are the incentives tied to the deal: Playoff berth: $500,000 Wild card win: $600,000 Divisional win: $750,000 Conference championship: $1 million Super Bowl win: $1.5 million League MVP: $1.5 million Is Aaron Rodgers married? Rodgers is married, which he confirmed on June 10 at Steelers' minicamp. He has not revealed the identity of his wife, something the quarterback plans to keep that way.
