MACC nabs Sabah businessman in ‘RM6,000 for Datukship' probe
PETALING JAYA : A businessman with a 'Datuk' title has been arrested in Sabah on suspicion of deceiving a man into paying RM6,000 to obtain a state honour from Pahang, which also comes with a Datukship.
The suspect, in his 40s, allegedly offered to help the man secure the title around 2023 despite having no authority to do so, Berita Harian reported.
The man transferred the money to the suspect.
The businessman was arrested at about noon today after giving a statement at the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission's Sabah headquarters.
Sabah MACC chief S Karunanithy said the suspect was released on bail of RM5,000 but is expected to be charged in Kota Kinabalu on Thursday in connection with the case.

Kota Kinabalu: A businessman with the title 'Datuk' has been arrested by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) for allegedly soliciting RM6,000 from an individual to obtain a Pahang state award. The suspect, in his 40s, was arrested at noon Monday when he appeared at the Sabah MACC Office here to give a statement. According to a source, the suspect is believed to have offered to help the complainant obtain the title of Datuk from Pahang in 2023, even though he did not have the authority to do so. 'The suspect is believed to have dishonestly induced the complainant to transfer RM6,000 purportedly for the purchase of ceremonial clothing accessories needed to obtain the award,' he said. Sabah MACC Director Datuk S Karunanithy confirmed the arrest and said the suspect was released on bail. (Facebook pic) PETALING JAYA : A popular actor and singer has lodged a police report over an allegedly defamatory and provocative post uploaded on the social media platform Threads. Acting Kuala Lumpur police chief Usuf Jan Mohamad said the report was filed at 4.12pm on July 18, Harian Metro reported. He said the male artiste was unhappy with a post by a Threads user, claiming it contained defamatory, provocative and seditious elements that were widely circulated online. 'The complainant believes the post could harm his reputation and public image,' Usuf was quoted as saying. Police are investigating the case under Section 500 of the Penal Code for defamation, and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 for improper use of network facilities. Usuf also clarified that the case has no connection to singer Shila Amzah, who recently claimed that she was attacked by a senior artiste during a concert rehearsal.

Kelantan open to talks with AIDS council, cops over LGBT event
Kelantan deputy menteri besar Fadzli Hassan said programmes touching on sensitivities must be approved by the relevant authorities. PETALING JAYA : The Kelantan government has expressed its willingness to meet with police and the Malaysian AIDS Council regarding the recent organisation of a programme related to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender communities in Kota Bharu. Deputy menteri besar Fadzli Hassan said they were seeking to discuss and gain a clearer understanding of the event so the matter can be resolved diplomatically, and to dispel any unfounded allegations. 'Perhaps the mistake was not the organiser's. That's why it needs to be investigated first so that police are not wrongly blamed by the public. 'The police have their job, the AIDS council also has its responsibilities. 'Any programme that goes against the state government's policies and the customs of Kelantan's people is something we simply cannot accept,' Bernama reported him as saying at the Kota Darulnaim Complex today. Fadzli said programmes touching on sensitivities, especially when held within village communities, require permission from the relevant authorities such as the Kelantan Islamic religious affairs department, police and others. He said the state government can also take appropriate action if any event is found to have violated any of its regulations In mid-June, Kelantan police raided an LGBT-related event involving more than 20 men at a bungalow on Jalan Kemumin in Kota Bharu. Kelantan police chief Yusoff Mamat was reported as saying the operation was conducted based on tip-offs and intelligence gathered by a special task force, following complaints. A search of the premises uncovered hundreds of condoms and several boxes of HIV medication stored in a special room believed to be used as a storage place by the organisers. The Malaysian AIDS Council said it had conducted an outreach session on June 17 in Kemumin to engage with high-risk communities as part of HIV prevention efforts before the police raid. The programme, which ran from 8pm to 2am, was part of a strategic approach by the health ministry to deliver more inclusive and community-centred HIV treatment services.
