Tom Hanks reacts after daughter reveals childhood of 'violence and deprivation'

Metro05-06-2025
Tom Hanks has spoken about his daughter's recent comments about 'violence and deprivation' while on the red carpet.
On Thursday, the actor was on the red carpet for Wes Anderson's The Phoenician Scheme and was asked about his daughter E.A Hanks, short for Elizabeth Anne, and her memoir.
In the tell-all titled The 10: A Memoir of Family and The Open Road, EA opened up about her turbulent early years, and revealed she had a childhood of 'violence and deprivation' with her mother.
The interviewer asked Tom how proud he felt of his only daughter, given her recent success with her novel.
'There is a pride because she shares it with me,' he said in an interview with Access Hollywood. 'She's very open about what the process is.'
'As a dad, if you've had kids you realise that you see who they are when they're about 6 weeks old. Their personality is on display right there, their temper, the way they see the world is demonstrated in their body language and on their face,' he said.
'I'm not surprised that my daughter had the wherewithal as well as the curiosity as well as I'm going to say perhaps shoot herself in the foot kind of wherewithal in order to examine this thing.
'That I think she was incredibly honest about.'
He then praised her work and said she was proud of her mind.
'We all come from checkered, cracked lives, all of us. Despite the fact that part of it would seem as though she worked for some international, well-known firm with a copyrighted last name.
'She knows that and she leans into absolutely everything. I think anybody who does that is a bold journalistic, literate mind, and I'm just thrilled I can say the same thing about my daughter.'
The book is an account of the six-month road trip she took in 2019 from Los Angeles to Florida. The book follows EA as she seeks to know more about her late mother's troubled life.
EA's mother, Susan Dillingham, died in 2002 from lung cancer at the age of 49. EA was just 19 at the time.
In her memoir, EA claims she and her brother, Colin Hanks, were physically abused and neglected by Dillingham. She also claimed that they lived with her until their custody arrangement changed after their mother got violent.
'One night, her emotional violence became physical violence, and in the aftermath, I moved to Los Angeles, right smack in the middle of the seventh grade,' she wrote in an excerpt published by People. More Trending
'My custody arrangement basically switched — now I lived in L.A. and visited Sacramento on the weekends and in the summer.'
The writer also claimed that her actor father once had to 'track her down' after she was taken out of school.
'My dad came to pick us up from school and we're not there,' she said. 'And it turns out we haven't been there for two weeks and he has to track us down.'
The 10: A Memoir of Family And The Open Road by EA Hanks was released on April 8.

Disney cruise passengers heard terrifying sound as girl fell overboard

What was meant to be a relaxing voyage aboard the Disney Dream turned into a moment of sheer terror for passengers when a young girl fell overboard into the open sea. The incident unfolded on Sunday morning around 11:15am as the cruise ship was sailing between Nassau and Grand Bahama Island, heading back toward Fort Lauderdale. Passengers were enjoying a typical day at sea when the chaos unfolded. "There was some kind of commotion," said one guest, who witnessed the incident and filmed part of the rescue, posting it to TikTok under the username Chandler Sphynx. "Then there was this awful scream from what I assume was the mother, and then this massive splash." She described the sound of the girl hitting the water as chilling. "It sounded like hitting pavement," she told People. Within seconds, the ship's emergency alarm blared across the loudspeakers with the chilling call "MOB port side" - the maritime code for Man Overboard. Passengers rushed to the railings as the magnitude of what had just occurred began to sink in. Witnesses say the girl had fallen from the fourth deck, an area typically equipped with plexiglass barriers and used as a jogging track and viewing platform. Moments later, her father jumped from the same height in an attempt to rescue her. "The splash when he went in was so loud," Chandler said. What followed was a harrowing 20-minute rescue effort. The ship, which weighs over 130,000 tons and can travel up to 25 miles per hour, immediately began to slow and maneuver as Disney's crew launched a bright yellow rescue boat. Crew members aboard the vessel could be seen tossing life rings and flotation jackets into the sea as they made their way toward the father and daughter, who were struggling to stay afloat in the choppy Atlantic water. For many passengers watching from balconies above, the wait felt endless. "I had to tell my daughter they were probably gone," Chandler admitted. "You just never expect them to survive something like that." But the father somehow managed to keep his daughter's head above water, treading in open sea until help arrived. At around 11:47am, to the sound of applause from passengers above, the pair were pulled onto the rescue vessel and brought safely back on board. Disney Cruise Line later confirmed that both guests were unharmed and praised their crew for their quick response. "The crew aboard the Disney Dream swiftly rescued two guests from the water," the company said in a statement. "We commend our crew members for their exceptional skills and prompt actions, which ensured the safe return of both guests to the ship within minutes." The ship's captain addressed the incident in an onboard announcement, commending the crew and reminding all guests of the importance of following safety procedures during their voyage. Disney officials say they are reviewing surveillance footage and investigating how the child came to fall from Deck 4, which includes protective glass barriers meant to prevent such accidents. The Disney Dream, which entered service in 2010 and underwent a major refurbishment in 2023, is one of the flagship vessels of the Disney Cruise Line fleet, known for its family-friendly atmosphere. Who was Belle in EastEnders as Bernie pays tribute?

This article contains spoilers for tonight's episodes of EastEnders, which air on BBC Two from 7pm or can be streamed now on iPlayer. Bernie Taylor (Clair Norris) has left Albert Square – but not before saying goodbye to someone first. The character had quite a dramatic exit, having scammed the Panesar clan out of thousands and fleeing to Spain. She thought she'd got away with the devious act when she framed accountant Vicki Fowler (Alice Haig), but little did she realise, the family were onto her. Vinny Panesar (Shiv Jalota) installed spyware onto her laptop, but due to a delay, she was able to transfer a final £25k into her account before he and brother Ravi Gulati (Aaron Thiara) realised. On Bridge Street, Suki Panesar-Unwin (Balvinder Sopal) tried to block her from boarding the taxi with cousin Felix Baker (Matthew James Morrison). Bernie pleaded with her to let her go so that she could start afresh in the wake of brother Keanu's (Danny Walters) murder. To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Concerned that the death could stir up more trouble for her, Suki stepped to one side, with Bernie and Felix driving off into the distance. But in the moments prior to her exit, Bernie visited the Walford allotments and laid flowers beside a tree, asking Patrick Trueman (Rudolph Walker) to do the same in her absence. But whose memorial was she visiting? Belle was the daughter of Bernie and her school mate Callum Edwards (Shaun Aylward). In 2017, the baby was conceived following a brief fling. Callum offered his commitment to his new family, suggesting marriage. Bernie was elated, but unfortunately the pregnancy didn't go to plan. More Trending Just 18 weeks in, she went into labour at home and the child was stillborn. Bernie was heartbroken to see that her tiny daughter wasn't moving. In the aftermath, mum Karen (Lorraine Stanley) arranged for a cremation and a memorial service was held at the allotment. Brothers Keanu and Keegan (Zack Morris) gathered to plant a tree in her honour, and in true Albert Square fashion, things became heated. Keegan lashed out at Callum, with Bernie pleading with them to stop. View More » It was then that the teens announced they'd chosen a name – Belle.
