Borussia Dortmund have a lot of respect for their Club World Cup last 16 opponents Monterrey and their veteran leader Sergio Ramos but hope to prevail in what they expect to be a very physical affair on Tuesday night.
Spanish defender legend Ramos, 39, joined the Mexican club in February, and they conceded only one goal in the group stage, against Inter Milan.

"They are a very, very good team. They define themselves through intensity, one-on-one situations and tackles," Dortmund sporting director Sebastian Kehl said.
Defender Waldemar Anton said that it will "get down to business in the tackles. It can sometimes hurt. I was also impressed by the fact that they sometimes chopped in from behind. I might have known that from my youth."
Looking at long-time Real Madrid captain Ramos, Kehl said: "You always want a player like that in the team because he epitomises a lot. Playing against him is sometimes unpleasant."
"We'll have to really stretch ourselves to get through to the next round. But of course I'm optimistic that we can progress to the next round."

Dortmund will face a largely hostile crowd due to the large Mexican community in the United States. But midfielder Pascal Gross said he "would be happy if there is a World Cup feeling in the stadium" after Dortmund played their last game against Ulsan HD in front of just over 8,000 fans.
Gross said that playing in the Atlanta arena with its air condition and moveable roof can help then, after their play suffered from having to play previous games in intense heat.
"I think that will help us. I believe there will be a different intensity," Gross said.

Botafogo sacks coach Paiva after Club World Cup elimination
Botafogo's coach Renato Paiva watches the Club World Cup Group B soccer match between Atletico Madrid and Botafogo in Pasadena, Calif., Monday, June 23, 2025. (AP Photo/Jae Hong) RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — Botafogo sacked coach Renato Paiva on Monday, 48 hours after they were eliminated in the Club World Cup by Brazilian rival Palmeiras. The Portuguese held the job for only four months but won Botafogo's first Copa Libertadores title. Advertisement Botafogo said Paiva was informed on Sunday night. Brazilian media say Botafogo chief John Textor made the decision because he wanted a more aggressive performance from the team in the 1-0 defeat to Palmeiras on Saturday in the round of 16. TV Globo reported Paiva told Botafogo staffers that Textor was trying to interfere in his team selections, which the U.S. businessman denies. Only 10 days ago, Botafogo beat Champions League titleholder Paris Saint-Germain 1-0, and Textor celebrated on the pitch with the 55-year-old Paiva. Earlier, Textor relinquished his role as president of seven-time French champion Lyon to American businesswoman Michele Kang. Textor resigned following the club's relegation over financial irregularities. Advertisement Textor has also resigned from Lyon's board of directors. He became Lyon president three years ago, taking over from longstanding incumbent Jean-Michel Aulas, who sold to Textor's Eagle Football Holdings after 35 years in charge. ___ AP soccer:

NBA Star James Harden Responds to Fan Trolling After Paris Fashion Week
James Harden embraced a variety of off-court pursuits as the NBA offseason began. Among his recent activities, the LA Clippers standout made a striking appearance at Paris Fashion Week-this time not as a celebrity guest in the audience, but as a model confidently strutting down the runway. The 11-time NBA All-Star traded the hardwood floor for a fashion runway as he walked for Willy Chavarria's Spring/Summer 2026 show. The Mexican-American designer not only showcased his designs but also had a special collaboration with sneaker giant Adidas, which made Clippers shooting guard the perfect headliner for the show. In a sportswear-centric section of the fashion show, the 2018 NBA Most Valuable Player showcased his signature dapper aura in a jersey-inspired T-shirt and baggy cargo shorts. Harden's runway look exuded a major street-style vibe, sporting the new Adidas model, mid-calf socks and a paisley bandana worn under a black cap. Adding a touch of mystery and swagger to his confident strut, he completed the outfit with dark sunglasses. Unfortunately, his runway appearance didn't sit well with fans, with some pointing out his stiff walk and lack of typical model poise. "It's a Paris Fashion Week runway and James Harden is here walking like an Optimus bot," a user shared on X. "James Harden walking at Paris Fashion Week like his knees only have one more NBA season left in them. Is retirement near for the superstar?" another post reads. Instead of feeling bad about the criticism, the NBA superstar joined in the fun with a playful comment responding to the reactions. "Runway Uno. Finally got the chance to walk the runway in Paris, especially thanks to @willychavarrianewyork. Y'all been frying my walk for 24 hours straight though chill," he captioned his Instagram post, showing that he acknowledged the feedback. Everton Thierno Barry transfer talks could accelerate after hurdles start to clear
The path is opening up for talks with Villarreal over Thierno Barry to advance should Everton wish to forge a deal for the starlet. The Blues hold a genuine interest in the 22-year-old, who scored 11 times in La Liga last season and has a release clause of around £34m. Advertisement A flurry of reports on Wednesday suggested Everton were continuing to explore a deal, though were looking to negotiate a lower fee for the forward. As interest persists, potential obstacles to a deal are diminishing. The summer transfer window has remained relatively calm over recent weeks for a host of reasons that include Premier League clubs operating with caution until the beginning of the new football financial year next week. READ MORE: How success in a new Everton kit could impact finances for years to come READ MORE: David Moyes could sign his next Tim Cahill for Everton after lofty manager claim Advertisement Several, including the Blues, are still in talks with players whose contracts are due to expire at the end of June, too. Another reason is the amount of football still being played, with the Club World Cup ongoing in the US and the European Under-21 Championship unfolding in Slovakia. Barry has been representing France in the tournament and was a second-half substitute as his side lost 3-0 in the semi-finals to Germany on Wednesday. Germany will now face England in the final on Saturday. The end of Barry's involvement in the competition could make it easier to move a deal forward, while it also now appears his club manager will not stand in the way of an exit. Advertisement Speaking to Futbol Fantasy via El Larguero, Marcelino appeared braced for the loss of the youngster and prepared to accept it rather than demand club chiefs put their foot down. He said: "If Villarreal believes that, with the investment they've made and what they can receive in just one year, plus the performance they've given, this transaction should be carried out, and if the player himself wants to look for a new destination, then we accept it and will look for solutions so that the team doesn't weaken." Barry is one of several players on Everton's radar. The club has already signed Carlos Alcaraz following his successful loan spell from Flamengo and remains hopeful of bringing Kenny Tete to the Hill Dickinson Stadium. The 29-year-old right back has been in talks with the Blues and is currently due to leave Fulham when his current contract expires next week. The Craven Cottage outfit had offered him new terms that were on the table when the season ended and the ECHO understands there remains a desire to keep him at the club. Advertisement Everton are on the lookout for additional options in midfield and to bring in talent on the right wing over the summer, with both areas in need of strengthening. Reported pursuits of Raphael Onyedika, of Club Brugge, and Ipswich Town's England U21s starlet Omari Hutchinson, are understood to be premature at this stage of the window, however.
