The processions, featuring tazias and 'alams' while participants performing 'matam', traversed various parts of the city before concluding at Badi Karbala Nawabganj and Bagahi Karbala.
The Muslims observe this day by offering charity, fasting, and praying in remembrance of Imam Hussain, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad, who attained martyrdom at Karbala in Iraq. Muharram is the first month in the Hijri calendar that marks the beginning of the new year for the Muslim community.
DCP (South), Deependra Nath Chaudhary, inspected security arrangements to ensure the peaceful conduct of the festival. He surveyed the procession route from Macharia-Basant Vihar-Yashoda Nagar to Karbala Naubasta, assessed police deployment, and issued directives to officers on duty. ACP Naubasta attended the inspection as well.
The district authorities had requested the 'Taziadars' to assist in maintaining social harmony during the festival.
Police were directed to patrol sensitive areas vigilantly and take action against anti-social elements.
The public was advised against spreading unverified information and encouraged to report suspicious activities. The DCP oversaw security, traffic management, and crowd control arrangements along the procession route.
Similarly, DCP (East), Satyajit Gupta, conducted security inspections along the procession route in Chakeri and Jajmau police station areas. He reviewed security deployments and issued instructions to personnel. The 'Taziadars' were asked to cooperate in maintaining harmony.

UP ATS Busts Major Conversion Racket, Mastermind Held; Foreign Funding Under Scanner

The authorities have arrested Jamaluddin, also known as 'Changur Baba,' the alleged mastermind who had a bounty of Rs 50,000 on his head. The Uttar Pradesh Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) dismantled a major illegal religious conversion racket operating out of Balrampur district, said officials. The authorities have arrested Jamaluddin, also known as 'Changur Baba," the alleged mastermind who had a bounty of Rs 50,000 on his head. Officials added that his associate, Neetu alias Nasreen, has also been taken into custody. Additional Director General (Law and Order) Amitabh Yash said the accused operated a widespread network targeting girls from a specific religious group, with alleged caste-based 'conversion rates". The operation was reportedly backed by foreign funding amounting to nearly Rs 100 crore, the official said, adding that the funds are suspected to have originated from Islamic countries. Investigators revealed that the accused used the funds to acquire multiple luxury properties, bungalows, high-end vehicles, and showrooms. Over 40 bank accounts—some opened under fictitious names—were used to route the money, suggesting large-scale money laundering. Sources told News18 that Changur Baba had earlier been involved in gemstone sales and rose to prominence after a stint in Mumbai, allegedly through contacts with a Sindhi couple. One of his close aides, Markandey Mishra, said that Changur Baba had predetermined conversion rates for Hindu girls and used his residence and shrine to further his agenda. Another associate, Mohammad Ahmed Khan, is said to have helped manage and secure Baba's illicit properties across various locations. Khan, described as the 'right hand" of Changur Baba, has multiple criminal cases registered against him in Balrampur, Ambedkar Nagar, and Lucknow. Sources alleged that he used these assets for anti-national activities. ATS sources also indicated that part of the foreign funding was used to purchase a significant property in Pune. Investigations into the financial trail and political links are ongoing. News18 accessed the hotel ID records of Jamaluddin and Neetu, revealing the room where they were hiding at the time of arrest. The details, including hotel registers, have been shared with authorities. BJP MP Dr Nishikant Dubey questioned the larger political motive behind such conversions, claiming Jamaluddin (alias Changur Baba) and Nasreen (formerly Nusrat) received hundreds of crores to convert Hindus in India and Nepal, allegedly for vote-bank politics. The ATS continues to probe deeper into the foreign connections and political dimensions of the case. First Published:

Boko Haram militants kill 9 people and injure 4 in northeastern Nigeria, authorities say

Islamic extremists killed nine people and injured four in Borno State in northeastern Nigeria, authorities said on Sunday (July 6, 2025). The attack was carried out by Boko Haram militants on the Malam Fatori community, Babagana Zulum, the State Governor, said. He did not say when the attack happened. The community, very close to the border of Chad, is about 270 kilometers (167 miles) from Maiduguri, Borno's capital city. The Governor, represented by Sugun Mai Mele, the Commissioner for local governments, visited the community and warned residents against collaborating with Boko Haram militants. 'Anyone found collaborating with the insurgents to bring harm or attack to the people of Malam Fatori will be cursed,' he said, adding that there are measures being put in place to fortify the town against future attacks. A resurgence of Boko Haram attacks has been shaking Nigeria's northeast in recent months, as Islamic extremists have repeatedly overrun military outposts, mined roads with bombs and raided civilian communities, raising fears of a possible return to peak Boko Haram-era insecurity despite the military's claims of successes. Last month, a suicide bomber suspected to be female killed at least 10 people and injured several others in an explosion in a restaurant in the Konduga area of Borno, as the State struggles to curb attacks by the extremists. Boko Haram, Nigeria's homegrown jihadis, took up arms in 2009 to fight Western education and impose their radical version of Islamic law. The conflict also has spilled into Nigeria's northern neighbors. Some 35,000 civilians have been killed and more than 2 million displaced in Nigeria's northeastern region, according to the U.N. Apart from the insurgency in the northeast, Africa's most populous country is also facing serious security challenges in the north-central and northwest regions, where hundreds have been killed and injured in recent months.
