Will complete Yettinahole project and supply drinking water in two years to 75 lakh people across nine districts: CM
'Yettinahole project is basically a drinking water project. Filling tanks to 50% of their capacity to improve the groundwater level is secondary. We have decided to first provide drinking water to people,' the Chief Minister told presspersons atop Nandi Hills, near here, where a special Cabinet meeting, to primarily discuss issues of Bengaluru Revenue division, had been convened.
Priority to drinking
The Chief Minister said that of the total 24.1 tmcft needed for the project, 14 tmcft would be used for drinking water purposes. 'Let us first complete the drinking water project that will benefit Chickballapur, Kolar, Bengaluru Rural, Tumakuru, and Hassan,' he said. About 3.08 tmcft from Lakkavalli reservoir (1.88 tmcft) and Vadeyarahalli reservoir (1.2 tmcft) is being proposed to augment the capacity of the Yettinahole project, he added.
Mr. Siddaramaiah said the revised estimate of the Yettinhole project, which commenced in 2014, was ₹23,251 crore, of which ₹17,147 crore had already been spent. 'However, we still require ₹8,000 crore to complete the project... The next Cabinet will take up the subject for finalisation.'
Providing a break-up of the cost incurred and the project status, he said the headwork had been completed at a cost of ₹4,202 crore, nearly 85% of the gravity main canal work had been completed by spending about ₹8,807 crore. Besides, 96% of the work on feeders have been completed, he said.
Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, who holds the Major and Medium Irrigation portfolio, said the Cabinet also discussed the issue of increasing the holding capacity of the balancing reservoir for the Yettinhole project from the earlier 1.89 tmcft to 3 tmcft. 'The reservoir will be built on the Tumakuru and Chickballapur border,' he said.
HN valley water issue
On the demand from farmers, who, citing the alleged groundwater pollution, are seeking the third stage of treatment of the water supplied to Kolar from the Hebbal-Nagawara valley, the Chief Minister said, 'If farmers ask for another stage of treatment of water, we will do it. This is not a drinking water project. Our focus is to improve the groundwater level.'
When reporters pointed out that Food and Civil Supplies Minister K.H. Muniyappa had also asked for the third stage of treatment, the Minister, who was sitting with the Chief Minister, acknowledged that the farmers had petitioned him in this regard. However, Higher Education Minister M.C. Sudhakar intervened and alleged that the demand for the third stage of treatment was politically motivated. 'The United Nations has appreciated the project. The Indian Institute of Science is providing vital values to the National Green Tribunal (NGT). But farmers have been demanding water since water flow has been reduced due to repair of two pumps.'
Meanwhile, the Cabinet on Wednesday approved the filling of 164 lakes in Sidalghatta and Chintamani taluks with the secondary treated water from the Hebbal-Nagawara valley at the cost of ₹237 crore.

JeM chief Masood Azhar not in Pakistan, claims Bilawal Bhutto
In a shocking revelation, Pakistan's Bilawal Bhutto has stated that Jaish-e-Mohammed chief Masood Azhar is not in the country. Speaking to reporters on Friday, the Pakistani politician stated that Pakistan has been "unable to identify or arrest" Azhar. The JeM chief, who is also a globally designated terrorist by the United Nations, was released by India in exchange for the passengers during the IC-814 hijack in 1999.(AP/File Pic) Masood Azhar is one of the most-wanted terrorists in India for his involvement in the 2001 Parliament attack, 2008 Mumbai attacks, 2016 Pathankot attack and the 2019 Pulwama attack. The JeM chief, who is also a globally designated terrorist by the United Nations, was released by India in exchange for the passengers during the IC-814 hijack in 1999. Over the years, India has accused Pakistan of "feigning ignorance" when it comes to the presence of Azhar and Lashkar-e-Taiba chief Hafiz Saeed in its country. Saeed in custody, Azhar not in Pakistan: Bhutto Speaking to reporters, Bilawal Bhutto stated that while Hafiz Saeed is in Pakistan, he is not a free man. "That's factually not correct that Hafiz Saeed is a free man. He is in the custody of the Pakistani state," said Bhutto in response to a New York Times report claiming the LeT chief was free. "As far as Masood Azhar is concerned, we have been unable to arrest him or identify him. Given his past within the Afghan jihad context, it is our belief that he is in Afghanistan. If and when the Indian government shares information with us that he is on Pakistani soil, we would be more than happy to arrest him. The fact is, the Indian government is not..." said Bhutto. The politician added that if Azhar is in Afghanistan, "It's not possible for Pakistan to go and do what all of NATO was unable to do within Afghanistan. There's no reason for Pakistan to want to see this individual or any individual of concern to be active," referring to the 2021 Taliban takeover.

‘You are insulting scientists': Pralhad Joshi hits out at CM Siddaramaiah over vaccine remarks
Union Minister Pralhad Joshi on Friday launched a scathing attack on Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, accusing him and the Congress party of undermining India's scientific community by casting doubt on the safety of indigenously developed COVID-19 vaccines. Pralhad Joshi (PTI) Also Read - Tejasvi Surya leads call for protest march, demands immediate opening of Bengaluru Metro's Yellow Line What Pralhad Joshi said? Addressing the media in Bengaluru, Joshi said, 'By questioning the efficacy of vaccines that saved crores of lives, the Congress is not just opposing Prime Minister Modi, but is also insulting the very scientists who helped the country fight a global pandemic.' The sharp response comes days after Siddaramaiah expressed concerns about a spike in heart attack deaths in Karnataka's Hassan district, where 22 people reportedly died of sudden cardiac arrests over 40 days. While speaking about the ongoing investigation into these deaths, Siddaramaiah had said, 'We cannot rule out the possibility that COVID-19 vaccines, which were hastily approved and distributed, may have contributed to this trend. A detailed medical review is underway.' He added that a committee led by Dr. C.N. Manjunath, Director of Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences, was tasked with submitting a report on the deaths and whether there was any link between the vaccines and cardiac complications. Also Read - Bengaluru man sets fire to relative's home after 7-year loan row, CCTV footage goes viral: Report Reacting to these remarks, Joshi demanded that the Chief Minister apologise to the country's scientific community. 'Siddaramaiah must clarify whether his government officially believes COVID-19 vaccines are responsible for these deaths. If not, he should publicly retract his statements and apologise for spreading doubt.' The BJP leader also contrasted the Congress's past with the current government's achievements. 'Congress ruled this country for 60 years but failed to produce even one indigenous vaccine. Under Prime Minister Modi's leadership, India developed two COVID vaccines, administered over 240 crore doses, and even sent vaccines to 150 countries,' he said. Joshi warned that such statements from top leaders could erode public trust in science and public health initiatives. 'At a time when the world has lauded India's vaccine success story, the Congress party is playing with people's lives for political gain,' he said.

Karnataka generates 200MW solar power under Kusum-C; 545MW to follow
Under the Kusum-C scheme, which aims to solarise agricultural feeders and provide daytime electricity supply to farmers' pumpsets, 200MW of electricity is being produced. In the coming months, 545MW of electricity will be generated, stated energy minister KJ George. Speaking to reporters after the energy department's progress review meeting of Hassan district, held on Friday at the Zilla Panchayat hall in the city, George said, "Under the Kusum-C scheme, construction of solar units with a capacity of around 200MW is completed. In the next few months, solar units with a capacity of 545MW will be commissioned at 93 locations. This will help provide an adequate daytime electricity supply to farmers." "The state govt has set a target of generating 2,400MW of solar electricity through feeder solarisation of agricultural pumpsets under the Kusum-C scheme. Recently, chief minister Siddaramaiah inaugurated a solar power unit established under the Kusum-C scheme in Gauribidanur. The feeder solarisation work is progressing at a rapid pace," the energy minister added. Under the Kusum-C scheme, generating 1MW of electricity requires 4 acres of land. If govt land is available, CM Siddaramaiah has directed that it be allocated free of cost. However, private power producers must pay ₹25,000 per acre, which will be deposited with the district commissioner and used to improve govt schools and anganwadis in villages where the substations are located, the minister elaborated. "If private land is used, developers awarded the power generation contracts will lease the land and pay landowners a minimum of ₹25,000 per acre," George said. Of the 4 lakh unauthorised irrigation pumpsets in the state, 3 lakh are already regularised. For pumpsets within 500m of power feeders, transformers will be installed by the department. Those beyond 500m will receive solar pumpsets under the Kusum-B scheme, he said. Earlier, during a progress review meeting, the district MLAs raised issues concerning the energy department in their constituencies. In response, George instructed the CESC MD to take swift action and reiterated that officials should proactively consult elected representatives and follow through on their suggestions. MP Shreyas Patel , MLA and Housing Board chairman KM Shivalingegowda, MLAs K Manju, Swaroop Prakash, CN Balakrishna, HK Suresh, and S Manjunath were present.
