How Elgin Town Hall transformation could make it Moray's touring destination like P&J Live and Eden Court

Senior officials want Elgin Town Hall's ambitious expansion and refurbishment to cement its place as a destination for touring musicians and performers.
Moray Council's Cultural Quarter project manager Claire English believes changes to the much-loved venue will raise the profile of the B-listed building beyond its already-growing reputation.
At the end of March, Elgin Town Hall closed its doors to the public for initial preparation works inside the building to start.
A main contractor is expected to be appointed by end of July with the main work on the project due to begin in the autumn.
The construction costs for the transformation are estimated to be between £15 million and £16 million.
Before the renovation, SSEN will move cabling from the nearby substation further away from the Town Hall.
The development is part of the £31 million Cultural Quarter project, which forms part of the Moray Growth Deal.
Claire said: 'It's definitely an ambition for everyone to improve the facilities and ensure the Town Hall becomes Moray's main venue in line with cultural venues between Aberdeen, Elgin and Inverness.
'This will benefit the offering for everyone.
'It is all about enhancing the facilities and improving the customer experience.
'Also it gives the venue a higher profile and generate more interest from performers, producers and audiences as well.
'People may not travel this far north for shows, however there might be more gigs for them.
'People already travel between Aberdeen, Inverness and Elgin for shows.'
The new look facility will have a large extension which will run down the length of Elgin Town Hall next to the Lossiemouth road.
This addition, which will house the box office, reception and lobby, will become the main entrance to the B-listed building with separate doors from both the A96 and Lossie Green sides.
Meanwhile, the current entrance area will be transformed into a new bar with glass windows looking out over a refurbished courtyard.
And a second extension will be built at the rear of the building, on the A96 side, which will house a second performance venue for rehearsals or smaller events.
Capacity will be increased too.
Claire said: 'This makeover will give charity Elgin Town Hall for the Community the opportunity to take what they have been doing really well and build on it with a fit for purpose building.
'The facilities for the performers will be improved too as it will be easier to load up equipment onto the stage.
'The fact that the new bar will be in the old foyer, somewhere which most people have been in, is great too.
'People have so many memories about the venue and more will be created once it reopens after the renovation.'
The Cultural Quarter project will also aim to bring Grant Lodge back into use.
The project will aim to combine restored heritage spaces with sensitive contemporary extensions.
These will provide flexible, high-quality areas and services including a café/bar, gallery, exhibitions, retail, and events like weddings, within a vibrant Moray heritage and tourism hub.
The transformation is estimated to cost around £9 million.
Meanwhile, the planning application is expected to be submitted by end of this summer.
Works to repair the historic building are expected to begin in 2027 and the phased opening of the building likely to take place between 2027 and 2029.

Coronation Street's Claire Sweeney issues apology to very famous co-star she 'underrated'

Coronation Street star Claire Sweeney has opened up about working with the late Hollywood actor Patrick Swayze and how she forced him out of his 'nervous' behaviour Hollywood legend Patrick Swayze made his West End debut in 2006 when he took on the role of chronic gambler Nathan Detroit in the stage revival of Frank Loesser 's smash-hit musical Guys and Dolls. ‌ Playing opposite him as romantic lead Miss Adelaide was a thrilled Claire Sweeney: "I got to snog Swayze every night," she fondly remembered on the Speakmans' Hope Clinic podcast. ‌ However, when she and Patrick first began rehearsals Claire, who was then enjoying success following appearances in the the first series of both Celebrity Big Brother and Strictly Come Dancing, hadn't grasped just how hugely famous her co-star truly was. ‌ Claire remembered: "I was not a fan. I was not into him in Dirty Dancing and all that. I preferred Ray Winstone and people like that. He was not for me." She revealed that Patrick appeared "nervous" and was consistently hesitant to venture outside the rehearsal studio during breaks. ‌ Eventually, Claire decided she'd had enough and compelled him to join her for a lunch outing: "I took him to the local pub. Then I took him for a sushi. I went, come on, we're going out to stop all this behaviour." Claire explained that she had presumed Patrick believed he was more celebrated than he truly was, but then, on the production's opening night, she finally grasped why her co-star was so cautious about being spotted in public. Claire reminisced: "There were riot police in the street, I'll never forget it, outside the Piccadilly Theatre, the whole street was like The Beatles were there. ‌ "It was full of people screaming, couldn't get a ticket for the show. And I was like, ah, okay, yeah, he's a big star. Sorry, Patrick, I underrated you there." The Piccadilly Theatre revival had been a particularly star-studded production, with the likes of Neil Morrissey and Miami Vice star Don Johnson also appearing as Nathan Detroit at various points, while Claire followed Sarah Lancashire and Sally Ann Triplett as Adelaide. ‌ Claire has not only kept busy on stage, appearing shows such as Hairspray and Legally Blonde, as well as writing her own theatre production Sex and the Suburbs, but she's maintained a steady presence on our screens too. In April 2023, the former Brookside star went back to her soap roots when joined the cast of Coronation Street as Cassandra Plummer. She's not afraid of a little reality competition either, following up her Let's Dance for Comic Relief and Strictly appearances with a stint in the sixteenth series of Dancing on Ice. Patrick's career was cut short when he died of pancreatic cancer in 2009 at the age of just 57. Claire Sweeney appears on Countdown on Channel 4 at 2.10pm this afternoon (Friday, July 25).

Outlander fans distraught at 'devastatingly cruel' theory Claire was kept from parents

Outlander fans have been theorising that a "devastating" plot line regarding Claire Fraser and her parents is going to come out in the prequel Blood of My Blood. WARNING: This article contains spoilers from the Outlander franchise. ‌ As Outlander fans eagerly anticipate the prequel Blood of My Blood, a chilling theory has emerged concerning Claire and her parents, Henry and Julia Beauchamp. ‌ Claire Fraser (portrayed by Caitriona Balfe) had a tragic childhood, losing her parents in a car crash when she was just five-years-old. ‌ This led to her adoption by her uncle Quentin Lambert Beauchamp (Prentis Hancock), a historian and archaeologist who instilled in her a love for history. However, with the upcoming release of Blood of My Blood on Friday, August 9, on MGM+, the prequel has sparked numerous questions about Claire's parents. Hints suggest that after Henry Beauchamp (Jeremy Irvine) and Julia Moriston (Hermoine Corfield) fall in love during the First World War, Julia finds herself transported back to 1714 via the iconic Highland stones. ‌ It's suggested that she and Henry are separated by time but remain determined to reunite. A Reddit user posed an intriguing question: "I just had this thought... if it turns out Claire's parents ended up living their lives in the past, wouldn't it be possible they were alive and well when she went through the stones?" ‌ In response, another fan agreed: "That was my thought when I saw the trailer. "What if the stones were reuniting her with her parents and Jamie accidentally 'interrupted' that." A third emotionally remarked: "That would be such a devastatingly cruel twist of fate. ‌ "Claire travels to when her parents are but no one's the wiser and by the time it's revealed they've already died of old age." As yet, there has been no confirmation whether either Balfe or Heughan will return to their roles as Claire and Jamie in Blood of My Blood. ‌ However, given that time travel features heavily in the MGM+ series, there remains a chance their storylines could intersect in the spin-off. During a Q&A session about Blood of My Blood, Balfe admitted: "I did not start the show thinking I would ever meet my parents. "I didn't know that these guys were going to be part of the prequel and I was super excited when I found out they were because I think I was like, 'Oh great, like it's really cool that Claire's parents are in the show.' "Having met Hermione and Jeremy, I'm like they are definitely fitting parents."

BBC drama that 'perfectly encapsulated grief' celebrated by fans 9 years later

It's been almost a decade since Phoebe Waller-Bridge's groundbreaking BBC drama Fleabag offered one of the most poignant explorations of grief on TV. The Emmy-winning show started as a one-woman show at Edinburgh Fringe Festival before making the leap to the small screen in 2016, with the first episode airing on July 21. The fourth-wall-breaking show stars Phoebe as the titular Fleabag who is navigating the complicated and sudden loss of her best friend Boo (Jenny Rainsford). As she navigates this trauma, we meet the people who make up her small, and chaotic, world, including her uptight sister Claire (Sian Clifford), her snooty stepmum Matrigna (Olivia Colman) and, later on in the show, the man she falls in love with but can never have – Andrew Scott's (Hot) Priest. The two-season comedy has built a loyal fanbase over the years and, with its regular inclusion in people's favourite shows of all time, it is also constantly being discovered by new viewers. Praised for its wit and surprising depth, fans are reminiscing on just what made the show so good – from its fundamental understanding of bereavement to its ability to flesh out flawed characters. During one scene, when Fleabag is describing the heaviness of Boo's loss, she explains: 'I don't know what to do with it. With all the love I have for her.I don't know where to put it now.' Sharing this moment on X, user @moralgrey simply wrote: 'When fleabag perfectly encapsulated grief.' Another user, @weirdnelipit, added: 'genuinely, my favourite one was this whole boo and fleabag conversation after her mom died, 'Like it sparked a new layer of understanding of grief & all of our unconditional love for someone & the closest people we have will always be on our side.. a love that will always remain.' 'Thank you Fleabag for one of the most beautiful depictions of grief,' chaoticguitar echoed. 'Fleabag summed up a lot of the grief we feel after a loved ones death in this scene,' Layal Shakeir agreed. Over on Reddit, fans were in agreement about the show's impact. User sgt-snuggles wrote: 'I didn't truly see it on first watch but Fleabag really has such a unique and real portrayal of grief. When I rewatched it after losing someone close I felt like I was seeing it through different lenses. 'The desperation to be close to people while pushing away real closeness, the fear of confronting how everything truly feels, it's so real and beautifully shown in such a deep yet silly manner.' 'The spiraling, confusing, messy grief is so well displayed in Fleabag with Boo. It's cold and snowy out, so I'm going to make beef stew and watch Fleabag and cry and drink wine,' soup-creature echoed. This was not the only moment fans were profoundly moved by. For many, the highlight of the show is the portrayal of sisterhood in all its messiness, and more importantly, all its unconditional love. 'I'm so grateful for the depiction of Claire and Fleabag's relationship — the ugliness and heartbreak and enormity of love and care. how different they're & how they choose to stick with each other,' @apparitionow said. In one scene, Claire tells Fleabag that she's the only person she would run through an airport for in a bid to do a grand gesture (typically reserved for romance). 'Portrayal of the sibling relationship in Fleabag still remains one of my favourite aspects of the show. As someone who has always struggled to verbalise her love for her sibling, this bit was like a eureka moment for me,' d_majumdar92. Other highlights include the heartwrenching exchange in which Fleabag confesses her love for Priest, only to be told 'it'll pass'. Or when Priest is the only one to 'ask her a question in 45 minutes'. Or when he's the only one who can break the fourth wall with her. For @alison_epp, these moments were an 'absolute surprising and beautiful way to show someone truly being seen'. More Trending Another fan shared their love for the scene when Fleabag is talking with an older woman who has been through menopause, Belinda, who delivers a layered monologue about 'women being born with pain built in' and the freedom you find in your later years. If you haven't watched Fleabag, then let this new milestone be your sign to watch it. You won't regret it. View More » Fleabag is available to stream on BBC iPlayer now. Got a story?
