Le Mans win won't be easy but Button 'optimistic'

BBC News11-06-2025

Jenson Button believes it is not going to be easy for his Cadillac Hertz Team Jota to get on the podium at Le Mans this weekend but feels "optimistic" about the chances. The former Formula 1 world champion finished ninth at last year's event for the British Jota team. The historic endurance race in north-west France begins on Saturday."[I feel] pretty optimistic. When you look at the testing on the weekend you'd say that Toyota and Ferrari do have an advantage in terms of pace," Button told BBC Radio Somerset."But this race isn't entirely about pace, it's about teamwork, not making mistakes through the night, consistency. All those areas we're very strong."I'm really looking forward to the race. It's not going to be the easiest for us to get on the podium but it never is in a 24-hour race."
This year's event will mark Button's fourth outing at Le Mans. He raced in 2018 for SMP Racing but retired due to engine issues. He returned in 2023 in the Hendrick Motorsport NASCAR entry and then last year raced for Jota for the first time in a Porsche-powered entry.Team Jota have switched to Cadillac for 2025."Last year was the first year really where I had a chance of winning in the top category," Button said."I still feel a bit of a newbie when it comes to racing at Le Mans, which I love because there's so much excitement and adrenaline."The 45-year-old will drive alongside former Le Mans winners Sebastien Buemi and Earl Bamber in this year's Cadillac V-Series R.Buemi won the Le Mans race with Toyota in 2018, 2019, 2020 and 2022. Bamber is also a former winner, having clinched the title with Porsche in 2015."I come here with a team that has a lot of experience racing here and winning here in their two categories," Button said. "Also my two team-mates are very experienced so it helps me a lot get to grips with the car and the weekend."

Paul Pogba seals return to football after doping ban as ex-Man Utd star joins Ligue 1 side Monaco

PAUL POGBA is finally back in football. And having ended his 18-month doping ban at the age of 32, the ex- Manchester United midfielder has joined a club in home country France for the first time ever. 4 4 Monaco have signed the 2018 World Cup winner on a two-year contract. The former Juventus hero last played in September 2023 but insists he "still feels like a kid". Pogba was suspended following a random drug test after the Italian giants played Udinese on the first day of the 2023-24 season. He was banned for four years but that was slashed by 30 months on appeal last October. The four-time Serie A winner pledged to ultimately resume playing. However, Pogba's contract with Juve was terminated by mutual consent last November. Two months after that, he appeared to hint at a THIRD spell with the Red Devils. Pogba teased United fans with an Instagram post. 4 He shared a cartoon drawing of himself next to Old Trafford ace Amad Diallo - with BOTH players in Red Devils' kit. Pogba sent speculation spiralling by adding the words: "Let's see what's coming..." Man Utd open to Rasmus Hojlund offers LATEST with Italian giants keen | Transfers Exposed He's been free to find a new team since March this year. And it's understood he hoped to attract interest from the Bundesliga as well as Juve's major rivals in Serie A. Instead, however, Ligue 1 runners-up Monaco have swooped. The Old Trafford academy product left United for his first stint with Juve in 2012. Four glittering years later, Pogba returned to the Red Devils for a then-British record fee of £89million. But his Premier League form was more erratic than electric. Pogba did help Jose Mourinho's Red Devils win both the Europa League and League Cup in 2016-17. But he reunited with Juve via a four-year deal and free transfer in July 2022, only to fail a drug test 13 months later He was found to have taken banned substance dehydroepiandrosterone, which boosts testosterone and can improve endurance. But Pogba's suspension was cut last autumn when the Court of Arbitration for Sport accepted his case it "was not intentional". Now the 91-cap star is revving up for a top-level return. Just days ago, as he neared his move to Monaco, Pogba said: "I'm mentally and physically ready, and I'm eager to start again. "I'm 32, but I still feel like a kid." Pogba also criticised Juve for rejecting his pleas for help. He told French TV channel TF1: "I asked to get a fitness coach. I had the right, and I was always part of the team. "They were not very kind to me, they did not support me, and I was shocked. I did not understand why." "I thought I was at war with anti-doping authorities."

Pogba joins Monaco after serving doping ban

June 28 (Reuters) - Paul Pogba has joined AS Monaco on a free transfer after signing a two-year contract, the Ligue 1 club said on Saturday, as the 32-year-old French midfielder looks to revive his career following a doping ban. Pogba was handed a four-year doping ban in February 2024 after testing positive for DHEA, which boosts testosterone levels. The suspension was cut to 18 months after a successful appeal at the Court of Arbitration for Sport. Italian club Juventus announced in November that they had mutually agreed to terminate his contract, which was due to expire in June 2026. The 2018 World Cup winner had a disappointing second spell with Juventus due to injuries after returning to the Turin-based club following his departure from Manchester United on a free transfer in 2022. Pogba was signed by United in 2016 for a then-world record fee of 89 million pounds ($122 million) but the four-times Serie A champion won only two trophies with the Premier League club — the League Cup and Europa League in his first season. He last played for France in 2022 but knee surgery prevented him from appearing at the World Cup in Qatar. Monaco finished third behind Ligue 1 champions Paris St Germain and Olympique de Marseille last season. ($1 = 0.7292 pounds)
