Businessman conned of nearly RM1mil in tender scam
KUALA TERENGGANU: A businessman lost RM932,300 after falling victim to a syndicate offering tenders for a purported procurement project of a college in Kemaman district.
Kuala Terengganu district police chief ACP Azli Mohd Noor said the 52-year-old victim received a WhatsApp message on May 28 from a man claiming to be a representative of the college.
He said the suspect had offered the victim a closed tender to supply and deliver portable generator sets.
"The victim made deposit payments totalling RM932,300 into two different bank accounts using both company funds and personal savings.
"However, upon checking with the college, the victim discovered that no such tender had been offered, as claimed by the suspect," he said in a statement today.
Azli said the victim lodged a police report at 11.53 pm yesterday, and the case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code. – BERNAMA

Acryl Sani and M Kumar had previously denied appearing in separate viral videos circulating on social media, which showed individuals resembling both of them allegedly receiving aid from a person bearing the title 'Datuk'. He said in response to this matter, his ministry is actively conducting awareness campaigns through the Digital Malaysia Tour programme to engage and educate the public, especially in rural areas, so that they do not fall victim to AI-related fraud. 'I have gone to Sabah, the interior of Kapit in Sarawak, and Penang to raise awareness among rural communities about the latest tactics and modus operandi of these criminals,' he said. Former programme manager loses RM436k in non-existent IPO investment scam
GEORGE TOWN: Police have opened an investigation paper into a non-existent investment scheme that left a 62-year-old woman RM436,000 poorer, following a series of transactions involving four different companies. The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating. Penang deputy police chief, Datuk Mohd Alwi Zainal Abidin, said the victim, a former programme manager with an airline company, was lured by an online advertisement for high-return IPO investments and lodged a report on June 12. "Initial investigations revealed that the scam was carried out via a WhatsApp group known as 'Enspire Capital', which promoted what appeared to be legitimate investment opportunities. "The victim was then instructed to download a mobile application called 'Freeman Plus', which allegedly served as the investment platform. "Between May 12 and June 2, the victim made 56 money transfers to four separate company accounts, believing she was investing in a lucrative IPO scheme," he said in a statement. Alwi said no returns were received as promised, and the perpetrators continued demanding additional funds until the victim realised she had been duped. "The total amount lost comprises the woman's personal savings and funds withdrawn from her Employees Provident Fund (EPF) account," he added.
