Deputy Digital Minister Calls For AI Legislation To Be Expedited
SHAH ALAM, June 28 (Bernama) -- Specific legislation governing artificial intelligence (AI) must be expedited due to the growing negative impact of the technology, particularly in fraud-related crimes.
Deputy Digital Minister Datuk Wilson Ugak Kumbong said he was informed that between 2020 and 2024, AI-related crimes have resulted in an estimated global loss of around RM5 billion.
'I expect the AI legislation to be tabled this year so that we can tighten control and outline appropriate penalties for those who misuse this technology,' he said when met at the Gawai Kitai Ngiling Bidai 2025 celebration, here today.
He was responding to questions regarding the misuse of AI technology, including incidents involving high-ranking government officials including former Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Acryl Sani Abdullah Sani and Johor Police Chief Datuk M Kumar S Muthuvelu.
Acryl Sani and M Kumar had previously denied appearing in separate viral videos circulating on social media, which showed individuals resembling both of them allegedly receiving aid from a person bearing the title 'Datuk'.
He said in response to this matter, his ministry is actively conducting awareness campaigns through the Digital Malaysia Tour programme to engage and educate the public, especially in rural areas, so that they do not fall victim to AI-related fraud.
'I have gone to Sabah, the interior of Kapit in Sarawak, and Penang to raise awareness among rural communities about the latest tactics and modus operandi of these criminals,' he said.
Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo was previously reported as saying that a full report on the proposed regulations and the possible enactment of specific legislation for AI would be submitted to his ministry by the end of this month.

According to Balachandran, the family had finished dinner on Pulau Perhentian Kecil and were heading to Pulau Perhentian Besar when their boat was hit by strong waves and overturned, claiming three lives. Balachandran said surviving passengers and the families of the deceased are still traumatised and have requested privacy. "They are not ready to speak to anyone, including the media, but they have expressed gratitude to all agencies and volunteers who assisted," he added. The incident occurred at about 10.30pm on Saturday. The boat was carrying 15 passengers aged between three and 40. Israeli Attack On Iranian Prison Killed 71 People
ANKARA, June 29 (Bernama-Anadolu) -- An Israeli air strike on a prison in the Iranian capital, Tehran, last week killed 71 people and injured many others, Anadolu Ajansi (AA) reported, citing local media. A spokesman for Iran's judiciary, Asghar Jahangir, on Sunday condemned the attack on Evin Prison as a 'full-fledged crime by Zionist forces,' stressing that the strike also impacted civilians living near the prison's visitation and judicial buildings, according to Iran's Mehr news agency. The casualties include prison administrative staff, conscripted soldiers, inmates, relatives of prisoners, as well as civilians living near the prison, some of whom lost their lives in the air strike, the spokesman added.
