Milan wins baking Tour de France mass sprint as French denied again
Milan, 24, took over the top of the sprint points rankings and had been wearing the green tunic in place of Tadej Pogacar, who had earned the sprint and the overall leader's yellow jersey by winning stage seven.
"It means a lot for me and also my country," Milan said.
"I was placed in a perfect position to take this victory.
"And I'll try and win again tomorrow," he said of Sunday's flat stage also billed as one for the sprinters.
Pogacar retained the overall lead with Remco Evenepoel and Kevin Vauquelin rounding out the top three, with no change in the top 10 as the peloton kept its powder dry.
"It's nice to have a day like this," said 2020, 2021 and 2024 Tour winner Pogacar.
"It was a bit more relaxed and not necessary to push too hard in the sun all day.
"Especially as Monday is a brutal stage," the Slovenian added of the eight classified climbs and many more besides in a stage loaded with opportunities on France's national holiday in the Massif Central.
Pogacar, 26, also spoke of his teammate Joao Almeida who was hurt in a late fall Friday.
"It was good to see Joao finish the stage okay," he said.
"As I said, Monday is a brutal stage but nobody is expecting Joao to kill himself for a bike race," said Pogacar.
A day after complaining of the heat and fatigue Pogacar also refused to be drawn on his participation at the Vuelta a Espana, the third and final Grand Tour of the season.
"I have to think about if I want to spend another month away from home," he said.
French hopes dashed again
Best young rider and Olympic champion Evenepoel hit a top speed of over 82kph (51mph).
"It was a nervy finale and I just wanted to stay up front in case of a fall," said Evenepoel
"It was a shame for Tim (Merlier, his team's sprinter) but he punctured in the run in," the 25-year-old Belgian added.
The remaining 177 riders from the original 184 rolled through the Brittany countryside with the harvest ongoing a month early and colossal crowds on the roadside.
Under clear blue skies and 31 degrees Celsius (88 degrees Fahrenheit) heat there was little inspiration in the peloton to breakaway until late in the day.
French duo Mathieu Burgaudeau and Matteo Vercher attacked from 70km and the pair were only reeled in on the edge of finish town Laval after enthusiastic support on this Tour, which is based entirely on French soil but with no home winner yet.
The pair were awarded jointly the day's combativity award for their efforts.
The French Groupama-FDJ team is based in this region but their sprinter Paul Penhoet punctured 7km from home and failed to get back into the action in time for the finale.
Stage nine on Sunday heads south from Chinon to Chateauroux and is another flat affair with the focus on keeping hydrated in the heat and staying in the saddle.

The hosts were set a victory target of 204 after the tourists lost their last four wickets within 45 minutes of the start of play to be dismissed for 121 in the second innings, their lowest Test innings total against the West Indies for 30 years. West Indies captain Roston Chase was then caught behind off Josh Hazlewood and at 11 for six, the West Indies' lowest-ever innings total of 47 – against England at the same venue in 2004 – looked a long way off. New Zealand's total of 26 in one innings back in 1955 is the record low in Test cricket. Justin Greaves and Alzarri Joseph will at least try to take the West Indies past those figures when they resume for what will surely be the final rites of another swift pink ball Test. Australia are without first-choice wicketkeeper Alex Carey, who suffered a concussion when hit on the helmet by Alzarri Joseph late on day two. Josh Inglis has replaced him behind the stumps.

AC Milan confirm Modric arrival
Last week, Milan coach Massimiliano Allegri said the 2018 Ballon d'Or winner would head to the San Siro from Real Madrid after the Club World Cup. Modric, who turns 40 in September, joined Madrid from Tottenham in 2012 and had been linked with a move to Italy since early June, after announcing he would leave the Spanish giants at the end of his contract. "AC Milan are delighted to announce Luka Modric has signed a contract with the club until 30 June 2026 with an option for a one-year extension until 30 June 2027," the 19-time Serie A winners said. Modric was in Milan earlier on Monday to undergo medical tests but according to Italian media will only start training with his team-mates in August. "I'm very happy to be here to start a new chapter in my career," Modric said in a video on the club's social media platforms. "A big hug to everyone," he added. Allegri is back at the helm at Milan having led them to the Serie A title in 2011 during his first spell in charge between 2010 and 2014. Their first game of the new season is in the Italian Cup on August 17.

England take 2-1 series lead over India with thrilling Lord's win
India were on the brink of defeat at 147-9, still needing a further 46 runs to reach a victory target of 193, when last man Mohammed Siraj joined Ravindra Jadeja in the middle. Nevertheless, the pair batted on until after tea on the final day to give India hope of an improbable victory. But with India eyeing a stunning success, off-spinner Shoaib Bashir, who had been off the field for much of the match with a finger injury, had the final say. As Siraj played defensively, the ball spun back past him to dislodge the leg bail with the faintest of touches to leave India 170 all out. As the England fielders celebrated, the fiery Siraj was crestfallen as was his partner Jadeja who was left stranded on 61 not out -- his fourth consecutive fifty this series -- after batting for nearly four-and-a-half hours. England captain Ben Stokes bowled two lengthy spells Monday on his way to innings figures of 3-48 in 24 overs, with fast bowler Jofra Archer -- in his first Test after more than four years of injury-induced exile -- taking 3-55 in 16. 'Dark places' Lively medium-pacer Stokes, whose career has been blighted by knee injuries, again proved his worth to England as a fully-fledged all-rounder.
