Maruti Suzuki shares slip 2% post Q1 results: Should you buy, sell or hold?
Maruti Suzuki posted a 2 percent year-on-year increase in net profit, reporting ₹ 3,712 crore for the quarter ended June 30, 2025, compared to ₹ 3,650 crore in the same period last year. Revenue rose 8 percent to ₹ 38,414 crore from ₹ 35,531 crore in Q1FY25.
In a regulatory filing, the company highlighted continued weak demand in the domestic passenger vehicle segment during the quarter. Domestic sales declined by 4.5 percent; however, a strong 37.4 percent surge in exports helped offset the weakness, resulting in a 1.1 percent overall increase in total sales volume. Maruti sold a total of 527,861 vehicles during the quarter, including 430,889 units sold in India and 96,972 units exported.
On the operational front, EBITDA fell 11.2 percent year-on-year to ₹ 3,997 crore, and EBITDA margin contracted to 10.4 percent from 12.7 percent in the year-ago period.
Elara Capital maintained an 'Accumulate' rating on Maruti Suzuki, while raising its target price to ₹ 14,279, implying an upside potential of 15%. The brokerage highlighted that the key trigger for the stock lies in a revival in domestic demand, especially during the festive season. It projected FY26 domestic volume growth at around 1 percent, in line with industry expectations. Strong rural demand contrasts with weak urban demand and affordability pressures in the entry-level segment. The brokerage revised its FY26-27 estimates down by 2–3 percent but rolled forward valuations to September 2027 with a 25x PE multiple.
JM Financial retained a 'Buy' rating and assigned a price target of ₹ 14,250, implying a 15% upside potential. According to the brokerage, the EBITDA margin of 10.4 percent in Q1FY26 was slightly better than estimates. Realisation improved to ₹ 693,832, aided by higher CNG vehicle contribution in the SUV segment. However, this was offset by higher raw material costs, sales promotions, and new plant-related expenses. The firm expects export volumes to remain robust, supported by models like the e-Vitara, Jimny, and Fronx. JM Financial anticipates a drop in ramp-up costs at the new plant starting from Q3FY26 and expects a better product mix to support future margins. Consequently, it revised EBITDA margin forecasts to 11.4 percent (FY26E) and 12.0 percent (FY27E), along with modest changes in EPS estimates.
HDFC Securities maintained its 'Buy' rating with a target price of ₹ 14,990, indication an upside potential of 21%. The brokerage noted that Q1 margins were in line with expectations and should improve as capacity utilization at the Kharkhoda plant ramps up. However, near-term challenges such as elevated steel prices and muted domestic demand may continue to weigh on performance through FY26. HDFC Sec is more optimistic about FY27, citing potential tailwinds from the 8th Pay Commission, tax cuts from the previous Union Budget, and pent-up replacement demand. On the export front, HDFC sees medium-term strength, attributing it to Maruti's efforts in diversifying its export portfolio.

'Market coupling in DAM segment of power exchanges may have little benefit'
The Central Electricity Regulatory Commission's (CERC) proposed implementation of market coupling in Day Ahead Market (DAM) segment of power exchanges from January 2026 may have little benefit for the power sector and is contrary to the findings of the pilot study conducted by Grid Controller of India, according to industry officials and analysts. They said the marginal improvements do not offer a 'compelling rationale' for implementing market coupling on a full scale, particularly in the absence of a detailed 'robustness and sensitivity' analysis. They added that even the January 2026 timeline for implementation would be challenging. 'The results of the shadow pilot conducted by Grid-India released in July 2025 do not indicate any significant benefits from market coupling. This is in line with the earlier CERC order dated 6th February 2024,' said an industry official 'In the DAM segment, overall welfare increased by a negligible 0.3%, and overall volume cleared increased by only 0.2%. Similarly, in the Real-Time Market (RTM) segment, both overall welfare increase and increase in volume cleared saw an insignificant gain of 0.01%,' the official said. Further, the increase of social welfare by ₹38 crore in case of DAM coupling doesn't mean that there will be saving of ₹38 crore, the official said. 'Savings will be miniscule, if at all. The reported increase in social welfare of ₹38 crore in DAM is theoretical, used for algorithmic modelling, and does not imply actual consumer savings,' the official added. 'Introducing central market coupling mechanism risks adding complexity, delaying market operations, and duplicating functions, without resolving core challenges such as market liquidity, deepening of participation, or improving investor confidence,' the official said. According to industry officials while the idea has been presented as 'market coupling', the proposed design more closely resembles 'exchange coupling' with no precedence globally. They pointed out that while Grid-India had submitted a detailed report to CERC, the Commission's order does not adequately reflect the comprehensive findings of that report. For ensuring transparency and stakeholder confidence, the complete Grid-India report should be made publicly available to facilitate informed discussions and independent assessments of the recommendations, they emphasised. According to a report by JM Financial the benefits of market coupling are negligible. 'A shadow pilot study by Grid-India revealed that DAM coupling resulted in an overall welfare gain of just 0.3% in price and 0.2% in volume. The volume of electricity that could not be cleared as % to unconstrained cleared volume was just 0.10% in FY24,' JM Financial analysts said in the report. 'Anticipated benefits (price, volume, transmission) of market coupling are not explicitly evident in the Indian context,' they said. According to them the implementation of power market coupling requires upgrading and integration of software, modification in infrastructure for compatibility, formation of data sharing protocol as well as consensus on financial settlement mechanism. 'We believe the January 2026 target for implementation of coupling is very ambitious, and implementation will not be possible before December 2027,' they said in the report. 'If applied elsewhere, this approach would imply merging competitive platforms like NSE and BSE or even Jio and Airtel — contradicting the principles of open markets. This will effectively kill innovation, service excellence and the incentive to launch new products,' said Ashish Kapur, CEO, Invest Shoppe, a boutique financial firm offering wealth management solutions.

Car dispatches to dealers subdued ahead of festivals
The sluggishness in the car industry was evident as wholesale deliveries in July, ahead of the festive season of Onam and Ganesh Chaturthi, were muted. Top makers, such as Tata Motors , Hyundai, Toyota and Honda, reported a decline in dispatches (year-on-year), with Maruti reporting flat numbers. Mahindra and Kia saw growth in numbers, but the overall mood of the industry remains subdued. Industry officials spoke of challenges in generating demand as geopolitical tensions, fears from US tariffs and job cuts in the IT sector keep consumer sentiments low. Maruti, the country's largest carmaker, said while demand condition was tough, the company expected revival during the festive period. 'The overall industry is not growing… (and) it's not a good sign,' Partho Banerjee, senior executive officer (marketing & sales), said. He added that affordability, especially of entry-level cars, remains a challenge and during the festival, company expected to see 'green shoots' building up. Hyundai, which saw a 10% decline in domestic sales, said there was 'some softness' in demand in recent months. '… we remain optimistic with the onset of the festive season and are fully geared up with robust supply and product offerings,' Tarun Garg, director & COO, said. Car companies are planning new launches to kick up demand and attract customers. Swedish luxury carmaker Volvo launched the next-gen version of its top-seller XC60 SUV at Rs 72 lakh (ex-showroom). MD Jyoti Malhotra said Volvo would consider bringing in plug-in hybrids to India if the tax structure gets conducive, and added that an FTA with the EU — on the lines of the India-UK trade deal — would help attract investments and new car models. The industry believes that while demand has been difficult so far, the festive season may see a turnaround. Companies are working on new model launches and offering discounts and incentives to push the numbers.
