Why the former Australia player Joe Burns switched to Italy before leading them to maiden T20 World Cup spot
Former Australia Test cricketer
Joe Burns
has made history by leading Italy to their first-ever T20 World Cup qualification for 2026. Burns, who switched allegiance to Italy in 2024 following his brother Dominic's death, used his Italian heritage through his maternal grandparents from Calabria to spark a cricket revolution in Italy.
Burns, who played 23 Tests for Australia from 2014 to 2020, had a solid international career. He scored 1,442 runs with four centuries at an average of 36.97. His career with Australia ended due to tough competition and drops in form.

The loss of his brother Dominic in Brisbane in 2024 changed everything for Burns. He made an emotional choice to play for Italy. To honour his brother, who was a passionate club cricketer for Northern Federals, Burns wears jersey number 85 - the same number his brother used, which was also his birth year.
As Italy's T20I captain, Burns quickly changed the team's fortunes. He led them through European qualifiers with impressive performances. His best game came against Romania, where he scored 108 not out from just 55 balls. The team beat strong sides like Scotland to become the 25th nation to make it to the T20 World Cup.
Burns has brought professional standards and winning attitude to Italian cricket. He's focused on building a lasting legacy. As he recently said, "It's more than just cricket. It's about honouring family, heritage, and building something that lasts beyond us."

IND vs ENG 3rd Test: Six minutes of drama! Why a fired-up Shubman Gill lost his cool at Lord's
Zak Crawley and Shubman Gill in London: A hundred, two gritty half-centuries, an excellent run-out and a fiery spell with the ball was not enough as it was six minutes of unadulterated drama in the dying stages of Day 3 which brought the Lord's to life. A fired-up India captain Shubman Gill was in England opener Zak Crawley 's face and had almost every Indian player converging towards the pitch during that moment. The umpires intervened to cool things down but the damage had been done. Gill had enough of the theatrics and the call for the physio was the moment he exploded. After a round of applause, he charged towards Crawley and did an impact player signal, and also fired some not so pleasant statements with aggressive hand gestures. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! The stump mic was alert enough to pick up the four words which went viral on social media. "Show some fu*g b**s," yelled Gill as the right-hander did all he could to deny India an over from the pavilion end. He succeeded and Jasprit Bumrah , equally annoyed, stood on top of his run-up for the final delivery of the day's play. He bowled an absolute peach but Crawley survived. The opener immediately turned back and was brisk walking to the dressing room as the umpires flipped the bails to signal end of day's play. A good old fashioned Day 3 got a spicy finish and has now set-up the remaining two days, and the series very nicely. The series hasn't had any dramatic moment yet and the episode on the third day could well fire up proceedings, and lend some flavor and colour to action. Both camps were asked about the final over and KL Rahul understood why Crawley was doing what he did, and also explained why Gill was so fired in those few minutes. Poll Do you believe this incident will ignite more drama in the remaining matches? Definitely Maybe Unlikely "I am an opener so I can understand what he was doing but Shubman Gill was fired up because we wanted to bowl two overs in the six minutes before stumps. Lot of theatrics and everyone was fired up," said Rahul at post-day presser. From the hosts camp, Tim Southee, part of the coaching set-up, felt this is part and parcel of the game, and reiterated both sides have played in the right spirit in the series so far. Sweden sweep aside 10-woman Germany to top Euros Group C
Sweden laid down a marker for Women's Euro 2025 by confidently beating 10-woman Germany 4-1 on Saturday and topping Group C with a perfect nine points. HT Image Peter Gerhardsson's team will face the runners-up from Group D, potentially reigning European champions England, in the quarter-finals after sweeping aside Germany with a powerful display of football in Zurich. Sweden fans sung ABBA songs in the stands of the Letzigrund Stadium as goals from Stina Blackstenius, Smilla Holmberg, Fridolina Rolfo and Lina Hurtig saw off the Germans who were among the favourites for overall victory ahead of the tournament. But after taking an early lead through Jule Brand, Christian Wueck's team did little else to justify their billing and were done for once Carlotta Wamser was sent off for handballing a goal-bound shot in the 31st minute. Germany finished on six points and will face the winner of Group D in the next round, with France currently leading the way ahead of Sunday's final round of matches before the knockout stage. Both teams were already through to the quarters before kick-off, with Poland winning their dead rubber with fellow eliminated team Denmark 3-2 in Lucerne. And Germany, who are now on the same side of the draw as world champions Spain, looked in fine form when Wamser put through Brand to squeeze the opening goal past Jennifer Falk in the seventh minute. But Blackstenius levelled five minutes later, just as the Germans looked to be on top, when she was given a baffling amount of space to stride through onto Kosovare Asllani's pass and drill the equaliser into the bottom corner. From that point onwards Sweden were in complete control of the game and Holmberg gave them a deserved lead in the 25th minute when she weaved her way past Klara Buehl and Sarai Linder. Trying to recover, Linder slid in to stop Holmberg from shooting but instead booted the ball off her opponent and into the net. And the game was up for Germany just after the half-hour following Wamser's acrobatic handball of Rolfo's shot in a desperate attempt to cover for wayward goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger. Rolfo stroked home the resulting spot-kick and the match was as good as over with nearly an hour left to play. Sweden slowed down in the second half, safe in the knowledge that Germany would have to score three times to snatch first place, and Hurtig completed the rout with 10 minutes remaining by tapping home Johanna Rytting Kaneryd's low cross. td/nf

Red-carded Springbok Wiese to be fully supported
South Africa coach Rassie Erasmus said on Saturday No 8 Jasper Wiese would be fully supported after being red carded in the 45-0 win over Italy which sealed a 2-0 Test series victory. HT Image Wiese was sent off by Irish referee Andrew Brace after 22 minutes for head-butting prop Danilo Fischetti. "I am unable to say it was right or wrong or how bad it was. Jasper must now handle that with our full support," Erasmus told reporters in Gqeberha with the back-rower at risk of being handed a heavy suspension. "He is so committed and passionate about the team. It would have been wonderful for him to play in this game with his brother Cobus." Lock Cobus Wiese won his first Springbok cap off the bench during the second half in the eastern coastal city. "It is sad because Jasper is not a guy that goes out there to do those kinds of things, but I do not want to say anything that can make it better or worse," Erasmus said. Brace also showed three yellow cards -- firstly to South Africa prop Wilco Louw, then Fischetti and fellow forward David Obiase. Erasmus said the dismissal of 29-year-old Wiese triggered an unusually early substitution with Ox Nche replacing fellow prop Thomas du Toit on 31 minutes. "We had seven men against eight in the scrum and we felt we needed a specialist loose-head while Thomas is more of a tight-head these days, so it was a tactical change," he said. When Wiese was sent off, record four-time Rugby World Cup winners South Africa were leading 10-0 and they scored a further five tries while not conceding against a top-tier side for first time since 2013. Erasmus said the second Test performance was an improvement on the 42-24 victory in Pretoria last weekend when South Africa struggled in the second half. "Last week we did not know a lot of the Italian players because we had not played against them. That made analyse tough. "After that game our senior players could transfer a lot of knowledge to the younger guys who played this week, and they could also point out where we thought their weaknesses were." A disappointment for Erasmus was an innovative move at the kick-off that failed as fly-half Manie Libbok deliberately kicked short to concede a scrum, at which the Springboks were penalised. "Sometimes those things work and sometimes they do not. We will not be able to do that again for a few games as people have seen it now," added the coach. It was the 17th victory in 18 Tests for South Africa over Italy. The teams meet again on November 15 in Turin. str-dl/iwd
