BMC, CMC told to finish desilting works by June 20
Chairing a high-level meeting on Thursday, Majhi directed officials to ensure adequate preparedness to check urban flooding in low-lying areas. After being informed that 20 per cent of the desiltation work in Bhubaneswar and a similar proportion in Cuttack remain pending, he set a deadline of June 20 for their completion.
Sources said, Majhi sought details about measures taken to prevent waterlogging on ISKCON temple road, Cuttack road, Ahalya Nagar, Ayurveda College area and other vulnerable areas from the Housing and Urban Development (H&UD) department and Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC). He also stressed enhancement of the carrying capacity of Gangua nullah to check flooding in the Capital region.

CM Mohan Charan's chopper stranded on college ground departs to Mumbai on trailer truck
KENDRAPARA: After remaining grounded on the playground of Kendrapara Autonomous College for over a month due to technical snags, the helicopter used by Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi was taken to Mumbai for repair on a trailer truck on Wednesday. Sources said a team of aviation engineers first removed the blades of the helicopter and with the help of a JCB machine, lifted it on to the trailer truck for its journey to Mumbai by road. Operation manager of Mumbai-based Heligo Charters Private Ltd Kartik Chandra Dutta said, 'This helicopter was manufactured by German-based Airbus company. Keeping in mind the safety of helicopter and pilots, we decided to shift it by road. After reaching Mumbai, the helicopter will be repaired.' An aviation engineer, who was part of the team from Mumbai, said it would take 10 days to carry the helicopter to Mumbai from Kendrapara on road covering around 800 km. 'We will follow the chopper on two vehicles for its safe journey,' he added. During the chief minister's maiden visit to the district on June 9, his helicopter was struck by lightning amid incessant rains. Though Majhi landed safely at the temporary helipad on the college ground, he was forced to return from Kendrapara by road. Since then, the helicopter had been stranded on the college playground. Additional district magistrate of Kendrapara Rabindra Kumar Mallick said the helicopter developed some technical snags due to lightning. Three aviation engineers spent a week to repair it but could not succeed. 'The district administration swung into action after various media reports highlighted the delay in shifting the helicopter from the college ground,' he added.

Chopper used by CM Mohan Charan Majhi stranded on Kendrapara college playground for a month
KENDRAPARA: The helicopter used by Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi is gathering dust on the playground of Kendrapara Autonomous College for the last one month after it developed technical snags due to lightning. During the chief minister's maiden visit to the district on June 9, his helicopter was struck by lightning amid incessant rains. Though Majhi landed safely at the temporary helipad on the college ground, he was forced to return from Kendrapara by road. Since then, the helicopter has been stranded on the college playground, causing major inconvenience to students and locals. Requesting anonymity, a college teacher said for more than a month, the playground is not accessible to anyone. The ground has been barricaded while a police camp and fire service personnel with their vehicle are guarding the helicopter round the clock. All sports and cultural activities of the college have also been stopped since June 9 as the playground is out of bounds for people. Nagendra Das, a local, said, 'We used to walk on the playground every morning. We have abandoned our daily morning walk for the last one month as the ground is no more accessible to us.' Former principal of Kendrapara Autonomous College Nanda Kishor Parida said this is the only ground where the district administration organises major events such as the Pallishree Mela, Independence Day and Republic Day. 'The long occupancy of the chopper on the college ground is troubling everyone. We hope the officials will shift the helicopter to some other place soon,' he said. Contacted, additional district magistrate (ADM) of Kendrapara Rabindra Kumar Behera said the helicopter developed some technical snags due to lightning. Three aviation engineers spent a week to repair it but could not succeed. 'We are guarding the helicopter. The district administration has already informed the state government regarding the stranding of the chopper on the college playground. We hope the helicopter will leave Kendrapara soon after it is repaired,' the ADM added.

Odisha to instal 3 radars for weather tracking
Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government has decided to instal new radars at three places for real-time weather tracking. The decision was taken at the State-level Natural Disaster Committee meeting, chaired by Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Wednesday evening. As Odisha is vulnerable to natural calamities like cyclones, the State needs modern equipment and skilled human resources, Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Suresh Pujari said. To obtain accurate weather-related information, two Doppler radars will be installed in Sambalpur and Balasore. A modern radar will also be set up in Bhubaneswar, Pujari said, adding that 24-hour emergency control rooms have been made operational at the district levels in the State. The minister said the State gets all weather-related developments through these control rooms, and accordingly, plans are made to mitigate the situation. 'We are now able to disseminate messages to the people and make them aware of weather conditions immediately,' he said. As many people died due to lightning in Odisha, the State government has taken certain measures, including the plantation of palm trees with the help of the Forest, Environment and Climate Change department. 'The palm trees act as a natural barrier against the lightning,' the minister said. He also said the State government was developing disaster-resilient infrastructure to reduce the impact of calamities like floods and cyclones. The State has 909 multi-purpose shelters to facilitate people with temporary accommodation during calamities in 25 of the 30 districts, the minister said. Addressing the meeting, also attended by several ministers, MPs and MLAs, Majhi said, 'Our government stands with the people during disasters and will continue to do so. During the monsoon from June to October, Odisha is vulnerable to floods and cyclones.' Noting that natural disasters are inevitable, Majhi said their impact can be significantly reduced through 'robust preparedness and interdepartmental coordination'. He stressed the prevention of human and livestock loss in natural disasters. The Chief Minister thanked all the stakeholders, including the government officials, for successfully handling flood and cyclone in 2024. He said Odisha government has declared unseasonal rain and heat wave as State disasters for which farmers are compensated as per the relief code. One person died due to sunstroke this year, the Chief Minister said. Majhi said rescue teams need to remain on alert for rapid deployment during calamities, and inter-departmental coordination is most essential to mitigate the impact of a disaster.
