Lincoln Cathedral: Music partnership with schools launched

BBC News09-02-2025
Lincoln Cathedral has recruited an experienced musician to encourage singing at four local schools.Jack Holliday, who has a background in musical theatre, will go into schools to deliver weekly workshops and help to develop choirs.Cathedral officials hope the partnership will inspire the next generation of singers. The most able pupils could be invited to join the cathedral choir.
Mr Holliday, who is from Lincoln, said he was excited to be working with pupils in his home county. He said: "Singing gives children an opportunity to express themselves and to demonstrate their creativity, and this project enables us to help more children discover and develop their voices."Aric Prentice, the cathedral's director of music and master of choristers, said the partnership was a new approach to offer more support within schools. He said: "We're privileged to be part of a centuries-old choral tradition at Lincoln Cathedral and see daily the difference singing makes in people's lives. It's important for us to be able to share that with new generations of singers."
Mr Prentice hopes the partnership will encourage future choristers. Nettleham Junior School is one of the schools involved. Head teacher David Gibbons described the scheme as "wonderful" and said the children were "singing their hearts out".In February 2024, Mr Prentice said the single-sex choirs were five boys and five girls short of a full complement.A year later, there is a waiting list for girls, but the choir is still looking for more boys.Listen to highlights from Lincolnshire on BBC Sounds, watch the latest episode of Look North or tell us about a story you think we should be covering here.

Lily Allen hits out at 'horrible' ex who questioned her hygiene habits 'to feel powerful'

Lily Allen and her pal Miquita Oliver spoke about personal hygiene on a recent episode of the Miss Me? podcast, which they co-host, that was released by BBC Sounds last week Podcast host Lily Allen has said that she was accused of having poor hygiene by one of her exes. She has suggested that it was "a form of bullying and abuse," and questioned the "gall" of the ex, whose identity she did not disclose. ‌ Lily, 40, made the remarks on an episode of the Miss Me? podcast, which she co-hosts with her pal Miquita Oliver, 41. They took questions from listeners about personal hygiene in an episode that was released by BBC Sounds last week. ‌ One fan asked the pair: "My question for you on personal hygiene is has anybody ever told you that you smell bad? And if they have, have they delivered that news to you very kindly or has it been more of a judgement and an attack?" ‌ Lily, who recently split from her second husband, Stranger Things actor David Harbour, went on to say that one of her exes had accused her of smelling bad during the relationship. She however recalled asking other people in her life if they felt the same way. Addressing the question, Lily said: "Yeah, I have, actually. But I don't think ... I asked other people if they felt the same way. It was somebody I was in a relationship with would do it to me. And I don't think that it was real." ‌ Lily continued by saying on the podcast: "I think that it was like a form of bullying and abuse." Her long-time pal reacted: "It's a horrible one." Miquita added in the episode: "As bullying forms of abuse go, it's a really horrible one." Further sharing her thoughts in response to the suggestion by her co-host, Lily told Miquita: "Yeah, it was like ... done on purpose to make me feel self-conscious and s**t about myself." She added: "And make them feel powerful." Miquita then discussed her own experiences in response to the question submitted by the listener. The presenter said that some relatives had told her that she was a "stinky teenager" and that she "had to start wearing deodorant". She recalled: "I really didn't want to either when I was younger." ‌ Moments later, Lily was heard bringing the conversation back to her own experience as she further reflected. She said: "Thinking about it, the gall of this person that had the audacity to tell me that I had an issue with my personal hygiene." Lily said: "When I first met them, I went over to their house and there was actual skid marks on their bed." She later added on the podcast: "They had the audacity to come to me and tell me that I needed to brush my teeth, no honey!" Miss Me? is available on BBC Sounds, other podcast platforms and YouTube.
