Lucknow: The state govt on Saturday reviewed 18 key challenges to improve scholarship distribution.
These include the requirement for fresh applications every year, delays in exam results, varying eligibility criteria across communities, arbitrary fee structures by private universities, weak monitoring systems, transaction failures and challenges faced by students studying outside the state.
"CM is determined to ensure that no eligible student is deprived of education due to lack of money. The govt is committed to making scholarship schemes simpler, transparent and effective," minister of state for social welfare Asim Arun said.
He said the rules will soon be updated so that more students can benefit. A unified portal and a digital monitoring system will make the application process easier. All departments concerned have agreed on creating uniform and transparent standards.
"A proposal has also been made to link the scholarship system with the Family ID to make eligibility verification easier and prevent fraud. Additionally, awareness campaigns will be launched to make sure students are well-informed about the schemes," he added.
Officials informed that the social welfare department is spearheading the development of an advanced integrated portal that would feature real-time notifications, and online document verification. Additionally, a facial recognition-based attendance system will be introduced to ensure only genuine beneficiaries receive support.
The scholarship schemes are designed to give equal opportunities to students from SC, ST, OBC, minorities, and persons with disabilities.

Have always tried to balance directive principles and fundamental rights, says Chief Justice of India Gavai at felicitation by legislature

Mumbai: Chief Justice of India (CJI) B R Gavai on Tuesday said that whenever he gets an opportunity, he tries to balance the guiding principles of state policy of the Constitution and fundamental rights. Gavai mentioned that it was a tightrope walk to balance the directive principles and fundamental rights. He stated that the three arms of the Constitution — the executive, legislature, and judiciary — have fulfilled their responsibilities at the completion of 75 years of the Constitution, as desired by Bababsaheb Ambedkar. Gavai emphasised that both directive principles and fundamental rights are considered equal and are the soul of the Constitution. "I have always said that this position is an opportunity for me to serve the country and society," Gavai said. Gavai was speaking on the Constitution during his felicitation by the legislature in Vidhan Bhavan's central hall for taking oath as the 52nd chief justice of India. "Today I am being felicitated in the same hall. This is a matter of pride for me," Gavai said. His father was chairperson of the legislative council and governor of Bihar, Kerala and Tripura. Earlier, the legislature passed a resolution congratulating Gavai on his appointment as chief justice of India. Gavai said Ambedkar was criticised for giving more powers to the Centre and less to the states in the Constitution. "But later Babasaheb explained his position and said that the Centre and the states have equal powers. In the early days, the SC had the view that whenever there was a conflict between the directive principles and the fundamental rights, then fundamental rights would prevail. But later, both these principles were considered equal," he said. "While working in a constitutional position, whether it is a Supreme Court judge or a high court judge, you are expected to work only in accordance with the fundamental rights and guiding principles enshrined in this Constitution. Babasaheb always said that the Constitution of India is a tool to create a bloodless revolution in the country," he said. "In the last 22 years, good work of justice was done. Babasaheb and the framers of the Constitution had a dream of creating social and economic equality. I got the opportunity to play a significant role in fulfilling this dream. This honour is given by 12.87 lakh crore people," he said. "After the Amrut Mahotsav of the country's Constitution, we have now started moving towards its centenary — 75 years is not considered a long period for any Constitution," he said. "Babasaheb always said that women are the most backward in this country. To bring those women into the mainstream, revolutionaries Jyotiba Phule and Savitribai Phule opened the gates of education. After that, a revolution took place in the entire country. Therefore, today women are at the forefront in all fields. This country got a woman prime minister and two women presidents. There was no president from the tribal community. But this was made possible by the Indian Constitution," Gavai said. Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis said humanity and sensitivity are Gavai's great qualities. "While working as a judge in the Bombay high court, he faced many difficult situations. On the one hand, there was the law, and on the other hand, there was the wider public interest. At that time, he emphasised how the law could be interpreted in the wider public interest. He made many decisions with the idea that not everything happens according to the law every time, but this wider public interest should be accommodated in it. In these cases, there would have been great dissatisfaction among the people. But he tried to find a way out of it too," Fadnavis said. "He never faced the pressure of his relationships. You can have tea with him, but his orders will always be on the side of justice. Often people go into a shell after becoming judges or chief justices. But Bhushan Gavai never went into a shell. He is always available to everyone. He interacts with the very last person wherever he sees them," Fadnavis said.

SHRESHTA schools demand illegal fees from students, says Social Justice Ministry

The Social Justice Ministry has flagged multiple SHRESHTA schools for charging SC students illegal deposits, violating the scheme's rules that promise free residential education. Image by canva (Representational) The Social Justice Ministry has found that numerous schools operating under its SHRESHTA program, which was created to give Scheduled Caste students access to high school education, are requesting "deposits" from parents and students under a variety of guises, which is against the program's rules, which were intended to give beneficiaries access to high-quality free education. The Social Justice Ministry issued a letter to the schools on Monday, stating: 'Regrettably, we have received numerous complaints from students and parents regarding schools demanding deposits under various pretexts such as admission fees, uniforms, books, medical expenses, security deposits, picnic fees and stationery costs.' SC students in the target areas are to receive residential high school education through the Scheme for Residential Education for Students in High Schools in Targeted Areas (SHRESHTA), the Hindu reported on Monday. The programme reportedly has two modes: one that allows private residential schools to join, and the other that permits residential schools run by NGOs and voluntary organisations. The official statement further warned that no fees should not be charged from SHRESHTHA students. "Failure to comply will result in strict actions being taken against the school through the CBSE, ' it reportedly added. As per data released by the Ministry of Social Justice, the SHRESHTA scheme benefits approximately 15,000 Scheduled Caste (SC) students through both of its operational modes. Of these, more than 5,000 students are currently enrolled in private residential schools under Mode-1 of the scheme.

However, he quickly corrected himself to say "Murmu". Seconds later, he did a gaffe again, mispronouncing "Kovind" as "Covid".Kharge ji's venomous and diabolical attack on Presidents Murmu ji and Kovind ji exposes the dangerous deep rooted Dalit Virodhi mindset of the Congress party. For the Congress party not Dalit welfare but only Dynastic welfare has always been top from denying Dr. (@crkesavan) July 8, 2025advertisementKharge made the remarks while he was speaking on the issue of large-scale cutting of trees in Chhattisgarh forests, and accused the BJP and its "industrialist friends" of land grab. "Our jal, jungle and zameen need to be protected and hence we need to be united... They (BJP) say we made (Droupadi) Murma President, (Ram Nath) Covid (Kovind) President, but why? To steal our resources, our jungle, jal and zameen. Today, people like Adani and Ambani are occupying it," he SLAMS ANTI-TRIBAL MINDSETThe BJP came down hard on the Congress chief, slamming him for the "anti-women, anti-Dalit, and anti-tribal" statement."The Congress president has used objectionable words against Draupadi Murmu. The entire tribal community is condemning this. He even used words like Covid for former president Ram Nath Kovind," BJP spokesperson Gaurav spokesperson, Shehzad Poonawalla, said the remarks reflected the deep-seated hatred Congress had for the SC and ST community."The comment made by the Congress chief calling President Droupadi Murmu as Murma ji, Kovind ji as Covid ji, then saying that they are land grabbers, reflects the deep-seated hatred Congress has for the SC and ST community," he said."This is the kind of tradition Congress has shown towards constitutional positions. They have spared neither the Chief Justice of India, nor the Prime Minister nor the President," Poonawalla further said.'RASHTRAPATNI' REMARKThis is not the first time that the Congress has landed in trouble for using alleged derogatory remarks against the President. In 2022, while talking to reporters, senior Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury used the word "rashtrapatni" for President Murmu. It triggered a major political row, with the ruling BJP raising the issue in the uproar, Chowdhury said it was a mere slip of his tongue and he had the highest regard for the President. "This error occurred because my mother tongue is Bengali and I am not well-versed with Hindi," he had said.- EndsMust Watch
