Min asked to provide more autonomy to municipal corporation
The discussions took place on the Sambhav portal, with municipal commissioner Kanpur Nagar, Sudhir Kumar, also in attendance to submit KMC's standpoint.
According to the KMC officials, a meeting was previously conducted between the urban development minister, and Naveen Pandit, president of the Corporators Welfare Association, along with patron Amit Pandey on June 16 at Lucknow. The Association had provided three written submissions to the minister during the meeting.
The Association emphasised that the disputes between the KMC and Kanpur Development Authority are forwarded to the commissioner, Kanpur division, where decisions are consistently made in favour of KDA because the commissioner is also the chairman of KDA. The Association has requested appointment of a different officer, instead of the commissioner for resolving disputes between KMC and KDA.
The second issue raised relates to the sewage farm.
The municipal corporation possesses 1200 acres of sewage farm land, which officially belongs to it. However, KDA has approved two projects for this land during its board meeting. Despite the fact that this land's use cannot be changed due to a previous order from the Allahabad high court, KDA is allegedly proceeding with these projects without adhering to the court's decision.
Further disputes regarding land have also emerged in the Smart City project.
KDA has been granted rights over land from the gram samaj and Improvement Trust, an arrangement unique to Kanpur and not found in the other 16 municipal corporations.
It was highlighted that cities in Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra are advancing. Kanpur, formerly the largest city in Uttar Pradesh, has now fallen behind. The Association attributes this setback to Kanpur Municipal Corporation's lack of authority.
Regarding these three issues, the Welfare Association had submitted its position and urged that authority be granted to municipal corporations, Naveen Pandit said.

Belagavi: The city, known for its linguistic sensitivity, is once again on edge over a fresh controversy surrounding the mandatory use of Kannada on signboards. With Ganeshotsav approaching next month, the police department is grappling with growing tensions between Kannada enforcement and opposition from Marathi outfits. The situation escalated after personnel from Belagavi City Corporation (BCC) removed a Marathi-only signboard put up by a Ganeshotsav Mandal at Patil Galli near Shani Mandal on Friday. In defiance, the Mandal reinstalled the board on Saturday and called upon other Mandals to follow suit, intensifying the standoff. All this occurred on the day when the border in-charge minister, HK Patil, was in Belagavi. After BCC personnel removed the board of the Ganeshotsav Mandal on Friday evening at Patil Galli, the situation was tense. This is not the first incident in the past fortnight on linguistic grounds. The controversy started simmering since the visit of Kannada Development Authority (KDA) chairman, Purushottam Bilimale, to Belagavi city a fortnight ago. During the meeting with Bilimale, the leaders of Kannada outfits appreciated the govt officials who achieved 80% success in Kannada implementation on the signboards in the city according to the govt guidelines. Ex-servicemen's Association celebrates Kargil Vijay Diwas in Mysuru
The Mysore Armed Forces Ex-servicemen's Association celebrated the Kargil Vijay Diwas here on Saturday. It is an annual affair which is celebrated on July 26 every year. The members of the Association made floral offerings to the statue of Field Marshal K.M. Cariappa to mark the event. The Association members attended the programme along with their family members and carried placards displaying the images of some of the martyrs of the Kargil war, like Vikram Batra, Sanjay Kumar, Manoj Kumar Pandey, and Jinto Gogoi among others. They also submitted a memorandum addressed to MLA for Chamaraja Harish Gowda, and sought 10% reservation in educational institutions for children of former servicemen. They also pointed out that the State government used to allot land for former servicemen, but the practice was dispensed with more than 10 years ago. Though the previous government and the present government in the State had promised to allot sites in cities or villages, it was yet to be implemented, according to the association. They also expressed regret that although the Mysuru Dasara is celebrated in a grand manner every year, no government had thought it fit to appoint them into any of the committees that are constituted to organise the festival. The government was also urged to issue fee bus passes to former servicemen across the State.
