Man killed on luxury cruise ship was 'on stag do' when 'chaos' broke out
A cruise passenger killed onboard a luxury liner is said to have been on a stag do when "chaos" ensued.
A 60-year-old man died on board the MSC Virtuosa a few hours after it left the port in Southampton on Saturday for two nights as a fight broke out.
It returned to the UK, as the MSC Virtuosa ship was still in British waters when the death occurred, and police arrested a 57-year-old man from Exeter upon the ship arriving back at Southampton on suspicion of murder, reports the Mirror. The victim's next of kin have been informed and are being supported by specialist police officers.
Passenger Lynda Hardiman-Pearce told MailOnline there were several hen and stag do parties onboard 'causing havoc '. She added: 'On Saturday night we were in a bar onboard and I was chatting to someone whilst waiting to be served. Apparently, the [man] was on a stag do.
'The cruise was full of hen and stag parties causing chaos. Since getting home we talked to our family, and they all said it didn't sound like any cruise they had been on.'
Reports suggested the men involved in the incident were part of a party of 20.
Detective Chief Inspector Matt Gillooly, the senior investigating officer, said: 'We want to reassure you that this appears to be an isolated incident on-board, and we want to thank the crew for their cooperation and assistance with our enquiries."
A spokesperson for MSC Virtuosa added: "Following an incident on board our ship, the relevant authorities were contacted, and we are co-operating fully with their investigations. We are providing full support to those impacted."
According to the MSC's website, the "Virtuosa's namesake comes from the word virtuoso, meaning someone highly skilled in any field of activity, and so MSC Virtuosa was named to pay homage to the skill and expertise of the MSC Cruises architects and shipyard partners at Chantiers de l'Atlantique who designed and built this innovative class of ships.
"MSC Virtuosa, along with her sister ships MSC Meraviglia, MSC Bellissima, MSC Grandiosa and MSC Euribia, belongs to the 'Meraviglia Class', where the impressive array of onboard experiences come together in perfect harmony with the space and the destinations, to deliver the ultimate cruise holiday experience."
The Maltese-flagged vessel, built in France in 2020, measures 332m (1,089ft) long and boasts 18 decks, accommodation for up to 6,334 passengers and 1,704 crew. Virtuosa was due to arrive in Southampton at 6:15am and depart at 8pm.
The ship also boasts a 4D cinema, bowling lanes, a casino, a game arcade, and a Formula 1 simulator. Passengers can also visit a theatre hosting Broadway-style productions, as well as a lounge featuring Carousel Productions at Sea shows.

The group said the mum also did not know the bags had cannabis inside. Her partner Florian Lisman, 38, originally from Romania, was arrested and said to be carrying 32 drug packages, an iPhone and £260. Others who were detained included Patrick Lee Wilsdon, 22, Lily Watson, 20, Shannon Ellen Josie Holness 29, Laura Amy Kappen 28, and Shona Campbell, 32. Each of them carried between 30 and 32 packages, Mauritian newspaper Le Mauricien reported. All of them had been on the same British Airways flight from London Gatwick to Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam airport last month. They have all been charged with drug trafficking and remain in custody. "The luggage they were forced to carry was fitted with Apple tacking devices used by international drug trafficking gangs to help smugglers keep abs on their shipments." The boy, who was unaware of what was in his bag, has reportedly already flown back to the UK and is staying with his dad. Justice Abroad has since launched a Crowd Justice fundraising campaign in a bid to raise £5,000 toward her legal defence. A British mum-of-two has been arrested in Mauritius after trying to smuggle drugs inside her six-year-old son's suitcase. Footage shows an argument between tourists and police at a resort in Marbella, Spain, during a crackdown on beach vendors when suddenly an officer lashes out at a man A tourist was filmed being hit in the face by a police officer in an argument during a crackdown on beach vendors in Spain. The policeman, who was seen wearing a helmet, slapped the man twice around the face despite there not appearing to be any prior physical provocation. The shocking incident happened on Saturday afternoon in Marbella at the popular holiday resort called Playa del Faro - which is popular with British tourists. The unidentified holidaymaker appeared to yell 'Hijo de puta' which in English would translate as 'Son of a bitch' before being slapped. Local reports said he had been remonstrating with the officer over his aggressive attitude towards the so-called 'looky looky' men who swamp Marbella's seafront in the summer and sell counterfeit goods like sunglasses and bags in breach of municipal regulations. Police officers were seen pushing one of them before the holidaymaker assault as others chased after fellow street sellers trying to run away with their belongings. Despite the video footage appearing to identify the police officer as the aggressor, the elderly tourist is understood to have been arrested. Another holidaymaker in a pair of skimpy swimming trunks, filmed being surrounded by seven officers and pinned to the ground after a shouting match and a lot of finger pointing, tried to intervene but also ended up getting arrested. Sources claimed today, as the video footage going viral was being looked at by local authorities to see if any officers should face disciplinary action, that one of the detainees threw a bottle at cops. He is denying the allegation. The beach drama occurred around a fortnight after another street vendor was filmed punching a policeman in the face as he tried to stop him confiscating the counterfeit goods he was selling at a Marbella beach bar. The astonishing scene unfolded in front of British tourists, with one forced to jump out of the way as the violence flared yelling: 'What the F##k! That was mental.' Police later claimed the 'looky looky' men they have to deal with on a regular basis are getting more and more aggressive and don't think twice about employing violence when police try to stop them and seize their merchandise because they know the courts will let them off with little more than a fine if they can be tracked down and identified. Marbella Town Hall has not yet commented on the actions of the police officer seen slapping the tourist filmed insulting him at the weekend. They said the incident had happened during a routine police inspection against itinerant street trading. Police officers on quads are carrying out more regular inspections during the summer in Marbella.
