Ed Sheeran Covers ‘Teenage Dirtbag,' His ‘Favorite Song of All Time,' With Wheatus Singer Brendan B. Brown

Yahoo07-07-2025
Like a lot of people his age, Ed Sheeran has a soft spot in his heart for one-hit-wonder Wheatus' 2000 hit 'Teenage Dirtbag.' The Beck-like beat folk jam has been in Sheeran's brain since well before he became a global pop superstar.
But despite loving it for most of his life, Sheeran, 34, had never performed the song live before. That is, until Saturday night (July 5) at a show in Hamburg, Germany, where Ed surprised the crowd by bringing out Wheatus singer Brendan B. Brown, who dueted with him on the band's signature track.

'I've got a cool surprise for you, it's really quite cool, but bear with me,' Sheeran told the crowd before telling a tale of performing the song with his high school band decades ago before they broke up. The trio reunited in April to play at a friend's wedding, which, naturally, led them back to Wheatus 'When we were playing, we played a song we used to play when we were 12. And I said, 'F–king hell, isn't this a great song?,'' Sheeran recalled. 'I wanna play this live.' He then invited the two men, as well as Brown, out to join him.'
'He's flown over especially from New York just for this, and it's gonna be f–king awesome,' Sheeran promised of Brown's surprise spot. 'This is one of my favorite songs of all time.'
In an Instagram post about the special moment, Sheeran reiterated the story. 'Used to play 'Teenage Dirtbag' with my high school band when I was 12. We reformed after 22 years to play our mates wedding in April, but we had so much fun I asked them to come rock it with me at a stadium,' he wrote in the video featuring the rocked-up cover.
'I cheekily asked Brendan from @wheatusofficial to come over and rock it with us, and being the ledge that he is, he did. One of my fav moments ever on stage, thank you Brendan. What a night,' Sheeran continued in the bit that also featured Sheeran posing with two of his lifelong mates who joined him the performance of the cheeky song with the ''Cause I'm just a teenage dirtbag, baby' refrain.
The footage also featured Sheeran and Brown rehearsing the tune in an empty Volksparkstadion and then performing it live for the sold-out crowd, with Sheeran excitedly bouncing around and strumming his electric guitar alongside Brown. In the video's comments, Brown wrote, 'BEST DAY EVER!!!! [heart emoji].'
Sheeran's Play tour continues on Friday (July 11) with the first of three shows at Portman Road in Ipswich, U.K.

The Switch 2 is off to a speedy start for big third-party games

With the Switch 2, Nintendo seems to be closing the release date gap with some of its third-party games. It's a problem that plagued previous Nintendo consoles, which often received games years after other platforms, if at all. While today's Nintendo Direct Partner Showcase may have lacked the splash of anticipated third-party games like Hades 2 or FromSoftware's The Duskbloods, what was on display offered some interesting insight. Showcases like this one offer Nintendo's second- and third-party development and publishing partners the chance to show off what they've got on the way. In the original Switch days, multiplatform games like Control would get Switch release dates months or even years after their initial launch, if they came to the Switch at all. And even then, the game might sometimes be the cloud version, requiring it to be streamed on the console, and these were generally hated for their inconsistent graphics and performance issues. With this Direct, it seems like Nintendo is working to bring third-party games to the Switch 2 faster and, hopefully, with gameplay experiences similar to the other consoles. During this Direct, we got a look at Cronos: The New Dawn, a new game from Silent Hill 2 remake studio Bloober Team. Cronos looks like the kind of game that would have struggled on the original Switch, but it's releasing across all three consoles and PC on September 5th. Madden NFL 2026 is also launching across the Big 3 at the same time — August 14th — a feat of note considering the last time a Madden title was on a Nintendo console was Madden NFL 13 more than a decade ago. Star Wars Outlaws has been out since August of last year. Its arrival on the Switch 2 in September represents Ubisoft's most graphically and technically complex game on the platform since the Assassin's Creed Anniversary Edition Mega Bundle. (And the most recent game in that collection was released more than 10 years ago.) Borderlands 4, while not launching exactly day and date, will come out on the Switch 2 a mere three weeks after its PC/Xbox/PlayStation launch. Even the third-party games that weren't shown today still represent exciting new prospects for the Switch 2. During the Switch 2 Direct in April, Elden Ring was shown as one of the games coming to the new console. With the way the original Switch struggled with more complex games, even ones designed with that console in mind, a big-ass, pretty-ass, particle-y effect-ass game like Elden Ring running on it was unthinkable. But Elden Ring Tarnished Edition, along with The Duskbloods, a totally original FromSoftware multiplayer joint, are both coming to the Switch 2. Final Fantasy VII Remake, a game with the same kind of, if not higher, technical complexity as Elden Ring, is on the way too. Nintendo's always been the kind of company to do what it wants rather than chase market trends, and that strategy has served the company very well. The original Switch wasn't at the bleeding technical edge and, because of the high quality of its games, it didn't have to be. The Switch 2, similarly, isn't pushing the same kind of power as Xbox and PlayStation, but the console has evolved just enough that it can support some of the still-popular recent games of its competitors. And even if not everything new will come to the Switch 2, the console still has a robust back catalog to bring forward. During today's Direct we saw that Sega's Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio is bringing the Yakuza Kiwami series to the Switch 2. We don't know how any of these games will perform when they're finally released on the Switch 2. We'll have to wait and see if the console fulfills the promise of bigger and better games running on improved hardware. We also don't know if the trend will continue beyond the initial excitement of a new console's launch window. But if the critical acclaim of the Switch 2 edition of Cyberpunk 2077 is anything to go by, the ports won't just be coming faster; they'll be good, too. Rumours that Phil Collins is in hospice are ‘completely incorrect', says his rep

A spokesperson for musician Phil Collins is setting the record straight about the former Genesis frontman's health. Although it's unclear how or where these reports started, rumours have been spreading like wildfire that the 74-year-old drummer is in hospice care due to terminal illness. 'Phil Collins in hospice? So, help me God,' one fan wrote on X. 'If Phil Collins goes next, I'm done with this planet,' another added. However, Phil's spokesperson has denied these claims, stating they, 'are completely incorrect'. Phil is indeed in hospital, but it's for knee surgery. 'He's undergoing a procedure in the medical ward related to his knees – nothing more, nothing less,' his rep says. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Phil Collins (@officialphilcollins) In a candid interview earlier this year with Mojo magazine, Phil opened about how his health struggles have diminished his passion for making music. He revealed that although he's considered returning to his studio to create new music, his deteriorating physical condition has become a barrier. 'I keep thinking I should go downstairs to the studio and see what happens. But I'm not hungry for it anymore,' he said in February. 'The thing is, I've been sick. I mean very sick.' READ MORE| Phil Collins bids emotional farewell to fans at final Genesis concert It wasn't the first time the Grammy winner had opened up about his health woes. In his documentary, Phil Collins: Drummer First, released in December last year, he revealed that his deteriorating health had left him unable to pick up drumsticks. 'It's still kind of sinking in a bit,' he said. 'I've spent all my life playing drums. To suddenly not be able to do that is a shock.' He said he'd been drumming since he was five, growing up in Hounslow, London, so losing that ability was extremely hard. Phil's health issues date back to 2007 when he suffered a spinal injury that caused serious nerve damage. In 2017 he was forced to cancel two shows after falling in his hotel room and hitting his head on a chair, requiring stitches to a severe cut near his eye. His fall was caused by foot drop, a neurological condition that developed after his back surgery and for which he now wears orthopaedic shoes. He also suffers from acute pancreatitis, a condition in which the pancreas becomes inflamed and swollen, as well as type 2 diabetes. In 2022 he retired. However, before hanging up his sticks he made one last appearance that year alongside bandmates Mike Rutherford (74) and Tony Banks (75) for Genesis' final show on The Last Domino? Tour in London. During the show, he performed seated while his son, Nicholas (24), from his marriage to ex-wife Orianne Cevey (51), took over the drumming. 'Tonight is a very special night. It's the last stop of our tour, and it's the last show for Genesis,' he said during the set at London's The O2 arena. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Nic Collins (@nic_collins) In recent years, Phil has expressed that if he can't perform to the standards that helped him sell over 100 million records, he would rather not perform at all. 'If I wake up one day and I can hold a pair of drumsticks, then I'll have a crack at it. But I just feel like I've used up my air miles.'
