Insider believes Steelers' T.J. Watt will become highest-paid defender

USA Today2 days ago
The Steelers appear to be laser focused on making T.J. Watt the highest-paid defender in the NFL — at least that's what insider Jeremy Fowler believes.
On Sunday's episode of ESPN's SportsCenter, Fowler claimed that the Steelers remain optimistic in contract negotiations, while Watt could usurp the title of highest-paid defender — a title Browns DE Myles Garrett holds:
"Steelers, I'm sensing are optimistic they can reach a deal with Watt eventually," Fowler said. "My sense is that he will probably be the highest-paid pass-rusher in the league when this is all said and done. He wants to be a Steeler for life, the Steelers want that, he's a legacy-type player.
"They believe at 30 years old he still has several good years left. They're just gonna have to come up with a number and a good guarantee structure. He did miss minicamp, so Pittsburgh has a lot of work to do. But typically, Pittsburgh perks up in these things around training camp and late July."
Fowler's comments mirror those of insider Jesse Palmer — who predicted last week that Watt could surpass Garrett's $40 million per year. However, insider Ian Rapoport quickly shot down the buzz, claiming he hadn't heard that exact number being discussed.
These insights will continue to fluctuate until Watt puts pen to paper — which is hopefully soon, as July's training camp continues to inch closer.

Previewing the 2025 season for Texas A&M WR Terry Bussey with his player profile

As we gear up for the 2025 football season, Aggies Wire is breaking down every player on the Texas A&M roster. Throughout the preseason, each profile will highlight a player's background, their recruiting rankings upon graduating from high school, and their projected role under head coach Mike Elko. Terry Bussey entered the 2024 season surrounded by hype—hype that new head coach Mike Elko rightfully tried to temper at every opportunity when asked about the true freshman's role. Fans speculated wildly: some wanted him on offense, others on defense, and a few believed he could play both sides of the ball. Ultimately, he landed on offense and special teams. His freshman season was hard to evaluate for several reasons. He arrived later than most of his class, didn't have a set position until later in the year, and had to navigate a new coaching staff establishing a new culture. Despite a low usage rate, Bussey showed flashes of potential, though it was a modest start to his career. In total, he recorded 49 touches for 572 yards and two touchdowns. Preseason Player Profile Recruiting Rankings (Class of 2024) The former five-star prospect was one of the most sought-after recruits in the nation. When Jimbo Fisher was fired during the 2023 season, several programs made a push, but Bussey stayed firm in his commitment and chose to remain with Coach Elko. In high school, he was a three-time Class 2A MVP and earned Mr. Texas Football honors from Dave Campbell's Texas Football in 2022. Despite missing several games during his senior season, he led Timpson High School to its first-ever state championship. Depth Chart Outlook Bussey's situation is unique. Last year, he filled a positionless offensive role. Coach Elko has now confirmed that Bussey's official position will be wide receiver, although his versatility means he'll be moved around—similar to how Deebo Samuel is used. Even if he's not listed as a starter, expect him to see plenty of touches during the 2025 season. Cowboys Source Issues Three-Word Truth On Diggs Rumors

Cowboys Source Issues Three-Word Truth On Diggs Rumors originally appeared on Athlon Sports. FRISCO - We've done the analysis. When it comes to Trevon Diggs' time with the Dallas Cowboys, there are three options being thrown out there. Advertisement Trade him. Cut him. Hope for him. We will concede that the 51st overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft has been a success story in many ways here ... it's been a while since the playmaking Diggs has lived up to expectations. That is mostly due to the fact that he has sustained back-to-back season-ending injuries to that troublesome left knee ... and some people here inside The Star also think it's due to a previous lack of intensity when it came to his rehab. But ... He is a two-time Pro Bowler and was a First-Team All-Pro in 2021 ... at a time that was pre-injury and a time loaded with his record-setting ability to grab interceptions. Advertisement Can that all happen again? As we have illustrated here, the Cowboys can "escape hatch'' their way out of his contract in a reasonably affordable way after the completion of the 2025 NFL season. Do it next offseason and they save about $12.5 million while they carry a dead cap hit of just under $6 million in 2026. Or, better yet, they could designate him a post-June 1 release, saving $15.5 million and then can spread the dead cap of $6 mil over the 2026 and 2027 seasons at a little under $3 mil per year. Trade? If Diggs' injuries keep him from returning to the field at some early stage this year (Trevon has targeted Week 1 for his comeback, unrealistic as that sounds), and if the rehab prevents him from returning to form in 2025 ... Advertisement Why would anybody want to trade for him? That leaves ... "hope'' ... and indeed, internet memes aside, "hope'' is pretty much the plan.'' So, a source tells "We will wait.'' Wait on the rehab. Wait on cutting him. Wait on panicking. Wait. Hope. The fact that fellow DaRon Bland is entering the final year of his rookie contract in 2025 plays into this; maybe Dallas simply transfers its investment from Diggs to Bland. The possible play of rookie Shavon Revel (also rehabbing) is a factor, too. If he becomes a starting-caliber corner, Diggs' importance here shrinks. But that's for later. For now? Cowboys Almost-Coach Kellen Moore Given 'Nightmare' Prediction in New Job

Cowboys Almost-Coach Kellen Moore Given 'Nightmare' Prediction in New Job originally appeared on Athlon Sports. FRISCO - The Dallas Cowboys are delighted with their hire of first-time head coach Brian Schottenheimer. But they came this-close to hiring another guy with familiarity here inside The Star ... Advertisement And now Kellen Moore is dealing with "nightmare'' predictions at his new job. The Jerry Jones-led offseason search for a replacement for Mike McCarthy was not a wide-net far-reaching one. It largely focused on Schottenheimer (who was McCarthy's offensive coordinator) and Moore (who had the same job here before Schotty). Moore jumped/was pushed two years ago and worked with the Chargers in 2023 ... and Schotty worked here with Dak Prescott as the QB finished second in NFL MVP voting. Then in 2024, the Philadelphia Eagles brought on Moore. ... and that worked out in the best conceivable way. The former Dallas offensive coordinator helped unleash running back Saquon Barkley last season, and guided quarterback Jalen Hurts to an MVP in Philly's dominance of the Kansas City Chiefs in last February's Super Bowl LIX. Advertisement As his reward, Kellen interviewed here but then eventually landed the head coaching job with the New Orleans Saints. (Ironically, as we understand it, beating out McCarthy, among others). The party is over, however. The projections are rolling in. And according to the oddsmakers, the Saints - coming off a 5-12 season - have the lowest projected win total of any team in the NFL at 4.5. Ouch. 'A successful season as Eagles OC led Kellen Moore to a head coaching position, but he could be in for a nightmare season,' USA Today writes. 'His best quarterback had health concerns. Then, he retired. Rookie quarterback Tyler Shough will need to get up to speed quickly, or we could be in for another run by Spencer Rattler.' Advertisement Moore turns 37 on July 5, so he still qualifies as "one of the brightest young offensive minds in pro football,'' as is so often written. But he doesn't have Dak and CeeDee Lamb anymore. Nor does he have Barkley and Hurts and A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith. He has, in New Orleans' offense, Alvin Kamara and Chris Olave and little else. The Eagles should be great again. The Cowboys think they'll be good. The Saints? they will likely be favored only four times all season, at best: twice against the lowly Carolina Panthers and Week 16 and 17 games against the New York Jets and Tennessee Titans. There are only 32 of these jobs, and Moore was due to get one. But the challenge is now about the avoidance of a "nightmare'' in the Big Easy.
