Trump threatens Washington Commanders' stadium deal
President Trump posted on Truth Social that he may restrict the team from building on the old RFK Stadium site if it doesn't change its name.
"I may put a restriction on them that if they don't change the name back to the original 'Washington (name),' and get rid of the ridiculous moniker, 'Washington Commanders,' I won't make a deal for them to build a Stadium in Washington," Trump posted.
He continued: "The Team would be much more valuable, and the Deal would be more exciting for everyone." He went on to state that the Cleveland Guardians should do the same and change the franchise name back to its former name.
Washington also faces some question marks with getting that deal with Washington D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser needing to get approval from the D.C. Council.
"I would put my level of concern - because when you're a big city mayor you're concerned about everything - I'll put it at a four [out of five]," Bowser said earlier this month.
Washington started out as the Boston Braves back in 1932 before changing its name in 1933. The franchise kept its now-former name when it relocated from Boston to Washington D.C. in 1937 and it remained for decades.
WASHINGTON UNIFORMS: Commanders reveal alternate uniforms that nod to their Super Bowl glory
In July 2020, the franchise dropped the name and logo.
"We are announcing we will be retiring the (former) name and logo upon completion of this review," the team said in a statement at the time and that team officials were "working closely to develop a new name and design approach that will enhance the standing of our proud, tradition rich franchise and inspire our sponsors, fans and community for the next 100 years."
The franchise went by the name Washington Football team for the 2020 and 2021 NFL seasons before rebranding as the Washington Commanders ahead of the 2022 season.
This isn't the first time Trump's voiced his dislike for the Commanders name. When asked about the stadium plans earlier in July, Trump said he wouldn't have changed the name in the first place.
"It just doesn't have the same, it doesn't have the same ring to me," he said. "But, you know, winning can make everything sound good. So if they win, all of a sudden the Commanders sounds good, but I wouldn't have changed the name."
A new stadium is one of the top priorities of the Commanders' new ownership group led by Josh Harris. That group finished a deal to buy the team in May 2023 and are hoping to finish construction by the 2030 NFL season.
In the meantime, the team would continue to play its home games at FedEx Field in Landover, Maryland.
The team has not released a statement in response to Trump's comments at time of publishing.

New photos and videos highlight close ties between Epstein and Trump
Newly uncovered photos and video footage published by CNN show more links between the notorious pedophile Jeffrey Epstein and Donald Trump, including Epstein's attendance at Trump's wedding to Marla Maples at the Plaza Hotel in New York in 1993. The media organization said on Wednesday that Epstein's attendance at the wedding ceremony was not widely known. CNN also published footage from 1999 of Trump and Epstein attending a Victoria's Secret fashion event in New York, where they are seen talking and laughing alongside Trump's future wife, Melania Trump. The outlet noted that the newly published material pre-dates any of Epstein's known legal troubles. Another image from the wedding shows Epstein in the background of a group photo of Howard Stern, Alison Stern, Robin Leach and Cecilia Nord. CNN also published photos of Trump and Epstein at the 1993 opening of the Harley-Davidson Cafe in New York, where Trump is seen with his arm around two of his children, Eric and Ivanka, while Epstein stands beside them. When asked for comment by CNN on the newly unearthed videos and photos, Trump reportedly responded: 'You've got to be kidding me.' He then reportedly called CNN 'fake news' and hung up the phone. Steven Cheung, the White House communications director, said in a statement to CNN that the videos and photos were 'nothing more than out-of-context frame grabs of innocuous videos and pictures of widely attended events to disgustingly infer something nefarious'. 'The fact is that the President kicked him out of his club for being a creep,' Cheung added. 'This is nothing more than a continuation of the fake news stories concocted by the Democrats and the liberal media.' The renewed scrutiny of Trump and Epstein's relationship comes after the justice department announced earlier this month that it would not be releasing any additional files related to the Epstein case, despite previous promises from Trump and the US attorney general, Pam Bondi. The decision angered many people, including some Trump supporters and other conservative commentators. Before falling out over a real estate deal in Palm Beach in the mid-2000s, Trump and Epstein were pictured together at social events on multiple occasions over the years. Footage of Trump and Epstein at a party in 1992 published by NBC has been widely circulated over the years, and photos published by the Palm Beach Post also show Trump, Epstein, Epstein associate Ghislaine Maxwell and Prince Andrew at a charity fundraiser at Mar-a-Lago in 2000. In a 2002 New York magazine profile of Epstein, Trump was quoted saying: 'I've known Jeff for 15 years. Terrific guy … He's a lot of fun to be with. It is even said that he likes beautiful women as much as I do, and many of them are on the younger side.' According to the New York Times, Trump flew on Epstein's jets at least seven times over four years in the 1990s. In the new CNN report on Wednesday, the outlet also reports that in Trump's 2004 book – Trump: How To Get Rich – he referenced receiving a call from a man he called 'the mysterious Jeffrey'. It's unclear if the 'mysterious Jeffrey' is Epstein and CNN said that the White House did not address it in a comment. Last week, the Wall Street Journal reported that Trump allegedly sent Epstein a birthday card in 2003 for his 50th birthday, that reportedly featured a drawing of a naked woman and a message that said in part: 'Happy Birthday – and may every day be another wonderful secret.' Trump denied authoring the card and has since sued the Journal. On Friday, the Trump administration asked a federal court to unseal grand jury transcripts related to the Epstein case. And this week it was reported that the justice department is meeting with Maxwell, who is serving a 20-year sentence for sex trafficking.

MIKEY SMITH: 8 unhinged Donald Trump moments as he scrambles to distract from Epstein scandal
Donald Trump is still scrambling to get people to talk about literally anything else - but Barack Obama is having absolutely none of it Donald Trump continued his scramble to get people to talk about literally anything but his former friendship with Jeffrey Epstein. He's not even hiding it. He flat out ordered Republicans to do the pivot from one subject to another in a televised speech last night. Meanwhile, Obama hit back at Trump's threat to jail him over a bunch of made up nonsense. Trump had some real trouble with what I believe Americans call "math". And if you weren't sure whether America is creeping slowly towards being an old school dictatorship, Republicans are in the process of naming an Opera House after the great leader's wife. Here's everything that's happened in Trump World in the last 24 hours that you need to know about. 1. Trump teaches Republicans to pivot from Epstein to 'Obama did it' At a reception for Republican members of congress, Trump went on a long detour, during which he coached those present, if asked about the Epstein files, to pivot to "Obama did it" "Remember this, Obama cheated on the election," Trump said. There is no evidence to support this claim. "You should mention that every time they give you a question that's not appropriate, just say 'by the way, Obama cheated on the election.' You'll watch the camera turn off almost instantly." 2. He claimed his poll numbers are up 5 points since the Epstein letter. They're obviously not Trump claimed at the reception: "They're the best numbers I've ever had. And with this made up hoax that they're talking about, my numbers have gone up for and five points." This is, of course, untrue. According to the most recent polling - by YouGov for the Economist - Trump's numbers are somewhere south of the gutter. He's at 55% disapprove, 40% approve, 4% not sure. His net approval is -15% - down 1.2 points since last week. For a while the only President who had worse numbers at this point in his presidency was himself eight years ago. According to the Economist poll, the has breached this threshold. 3. Pam Bondi did her own little Watergate-style purge A group of US judges last night voted to replace Trump's pick for New Jersey's top federal prosecutor - who just happens to be one of his former personal lawyers. Alina Habba defended Trump in a series of legal cases, but has no experience as a prosecutor in criminal law. Nevertheless she was given the job on an interim basis, and officially nominated for the position. So when judges rejected her as prosecutor - a rare move - at the end of her 120 post, it was expected her deputy, career prosecutor Desiree Leigh Grace, would take over. That made Bondi mad, so she fired the deputy, giving no reason for the decision. "This Department of Justice does not tolerate rogue judges - especially when they threaten the President's core Article II powers," Bondi said on Twitter after the move. Bondi, it's said, plans to reinstall Habba in the post, but it's unclear how. 4. Can we just return to how the President is casually accusing his predecessor of treason and threatening to jail him? Because that seems like kind of a big deal, and it's not really being treated as one. If any previous President had done this it would be a huge scandal. Like, grounds for impeachment huge. Even the line where he accuses Obama of trying to instigate a coup, when Trump himself tried to instigate a coup four years ago, feels like a throwaway detail. 5. Obama has had enough of this nonsense "Out of respect for the office of the presidency, our office does not normally dignify the constant nonsense and misinformation flowing out of this White House with a response," the former President said in a statement. "But these claims are outrageous enough to merit one. These bizarre allegations are ridiculous and a weak attempt at distraction. "Nothing in the document issued last week undercuts the widely accepted conclusion that Russia worked to influence the 2016 presidential election but did not successfully manipulate any votes. "These findings were affirmed in a 2020 report by the bipartisan Senate Intelligence Committee, led by then-Chairman Marco Rubio." As we've written previously, Trump, Gabbard and the people who go out to bat for them on TV either don't know the difference between "Russia hacked the vote tallies" and "Russia ran a propaganda campaign, some of which included hacking and leaking people's emails" - or they're lying. Bottom line is, Obama's right - the documents don't say what they say they say. 6. And yet, Gabbard keeps declassifying meaningless documents Last night Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard added another meaningless document to her crazy wall of conspiracy theories. This time the red wool leads the reader to a 44-page report prepared by Republican members of the House Intelligence Committee - without input from their Democrat counterparts - from 2020. The previously secret document spends a long time quibbling about whether the Intelligence community's view that Vladimir Putin had a "clear preference" for Donald Trump winning the election was based on good intelligence. The Republicans, shockingly, decided was not. It's notable though that the document itself doesn't say Putin didn't want Trump to win - only that in their view the source of that claim from back in 2016 was sketchy. It also doesn't say Putin didn't try to influence the result by attacking Hillary Clinton's campaign - just that in their view the motivation was to sow discontent, rather than influence the outcome. It's really incredible how many previously classified files a government can release while it's trying not to release other ones, isn't it? Get Donald Trump updates straight to your WhatsApp! For a businessman, Trump has a hard time with percentages Discussing his plan to reduce drug prices, Trump said he was going to cut them by "numbers that are not even thought to be achievable." "This is somebody nobody else can do. I can get the drug prices down… 1000% 600% 500% 1500%. Numbers that are not even thought to be achievable." Given all of those reductions would result in drug companies giving money to patients to use their drugs, no Donald, they're not even thought to be achievable. Stay in school, kids. 8. They might be renaming an opera house after Melania Republicans on the House Appropriations Committee have voted to adopt an amendment that would re-name the second largest auditorium in the Kennedy Center after Melania Trump. It isn't currently named after anyone.
