Nagapattinam (Tamil Nadu), Jul 20 (PTI) AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami has expressed concerns over the escalating crimes against women in Tamil Nadu, claiming that even young girls were not safe.
He alleged that criminals were getting emboldened and flayed the ruling DMK for not ensuring safety for girls and women.
Addressing a rally here on Saturday as part of his statewide campaign to 'protect people, and redeem Tamil Nadu", Palaniswami said, 'the culprit who allegedly raped a ten-year-old girl in Gummidipoondi is yet to be arrested. Young girls, women and even elderly persons are not safe in the DMK rule." 'Do you want such a government to continue?" the former CM asked, and the crowd replied with a thunderous 'no".
Speaking at Vedaranyam, famous for the salt sathyagraha against the British, Palaniswami said people were 'disillusioned' on all fronts with the present DMK regime and 'they are ready for another Satyagraha – this time against the DMK to vote out that party in next year's Assembly election." Earlier, Palaniswami, accompanied by party seniors, visited the Basilica of Our Lady of Health, also known as the Velankanni church, lit a candle and offered prayers.
While addressing a roadshow in Nagapattinam, he paused for a few minutes from his campaign vehicle till the Muslims in the neighbourhood completed their evening prayers. PTI JSP KH ROH

AIADMK stages walkout from Salem Corporation council meeting

The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) councillors staged a walkout from the Salem Corporation council meeting on Friday (July 25, 2025), alleging that corporation officials are creating revenue loss for the civic body. Salem Corporation Mayor A. Ramachandran presided over the meeting during which 75 resolutions were passed. Speaking at the meeting, ward 22 councillor (AIADMK) K.C. Selvaraj said that citing deviation in works carried out in wards 22 and 24, the Salem Corporation revised the tender amount and created a loss for the civic body. The corporation should constitute a committee including the councillors to inquire into this. Stating that the two ward councillors belong to AIADMK, the officials are cheating them, he alleged. Ward 32 councillor (DMK) K. Bowmika Thapsira said that the sewage water from the public toilets behind the VOC market flows on the road and corporation officials do not remove the encroachments in the ward. Ward 34 councillor (DMK) Esan Elango said that online food delivery companies are providing food in plastic containers. The Salem Corporation should bring a change and should make them serve the food in eco-friendly, alternative ways. It will be the best example for other corporations in the State, he added. While speaking in the meeting, ward 9 councillor V. Deivalingam alleged that AIADMK IT wing personnel were covering the council meeting along with media persons. When the AIADMK councillors opposed this, it turned into a verbal duel between the two party councillors. Later, the Mayor intervened and pacified both sides. Opposition leader (AIADMK) N. Yadhavamoorthy said that due to wrong policies of Salem Corporation in providing tenders for the shops in VOC market, Salem Corporation is facing a loss of ₹8 crore each year. In the pretext of deviation, the corporation officials increased the tender cost in all works. Replying to these allegations, corporation officials clarified that during the course of work, there are chances for an increase in cost and it will be under the price of the estimation of the project. But, unsatisfied with the answers, the AIADMK councillors staged a walkout from the meeting.

DMK government's failure to take stern action has emboldened criminals: Palaniswami

AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami, on Friday (July 25, 2025), alleged that the law and order situation in Tamil Nadu was completely ruined under the DMK government. The DMK government's failure to take stern action and maintain law and order had emboldened criminals who have no fear of the police, he charged, citing a double murder reported in Avudaiyarkoil in Pudukottai district on Thursday night. Speaking to journalists in Pudukottai, he alleged that murder, robbery, thefts, crimes against children and targeted killings of elderly persons had become a regular feature. Only if criminals feared stern action, crimes would come down. However, that was not the case under the DMK government, Mr. Palaniswami said. There was no respect for honest and upright police officers under the DMK government. The prize given to such honest officers was suspension orders. 'It is not good for a government to take vindictive action against honest officers,' he said. The responsibility of the main Opposition party was to point out the problems and issues faced by the people, but those in power were just dismissing them instead of rectifying. The government was unaware of the problems faced by the people, he said. Asked whether he would meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his visit to Tiruchi and Gangaikonda Cholapuram on Sunday (July 27), Mr. Palaniswami said he was not aware of the complete programme of the Prime Minister till now adding that he was yet to receive the official itinerary of Mr. Modi. Replying to a query, Mr. Palaniswami said several schemes launched during the AIADMK regime were withdrawn after the DMK came to power. Steps would be taken to implement them once the AIADMK returned to power. The former Chief Minister said he had so far covered 46 Assembly constituencies and met around 15 lakh people during his 'Makkalai Kaappom' campaign. The reception to his campaign had given him the hope of a huge victory for the AIADMK-led alliance, he said. 'Uruttukalum Thiruttukalum' outreach initiative Earlier, he launched the AIADMK's outreach initiative christened 'Uruttukalum Thiruttukalum' to circulate pamphlets containing a set of promises made by the DMK government in the run up to the 2021 Assembly elections to seek feedback from the people as to whether the promises had been fulfilled and to obtain their rating for the government.

India must triple its satellites, build space station by 2035: Isro chief

India needs to nearly triple its satellite fleet in orbit over the next three years, Indian Space Research Organisation (Isro) Chairman V Narayanan said on Friday while delivering the GP Birla Memorial Lecture on Indian Space Programme – Accomplishments, Challenges and Future Perspectives. During his address, as reported by PTI, Narayanan said the current count of 55 satellites would need to rise sharply to meet national needs. "The requirement is huge. The demand is so much that we have to build satellites. We are working towards that," he said. Narayanan laid out an ambitious vision for India's space future, projecting that the country would be on par with global space powers by 2040 in terms of technology, application capabilities, and infrastructure. A key milestone on this trajectory is the construction of India's first independent space station, with the first module planned for launch in 2028 and the full structure expected to be in orbit by 2035. 12 launch missions in 2025 Isro has lined up 12 launch vehicle missions for 2025, with the most immediate being the highly anticipated launch of the Nasa-Isro Synthetic Aperture Radar (NISAR) satellite. The $1.5-billion Earth observation satellite is scheduled to lift off aboard the GSLV F16 from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre on July 30. NISAR, which will be the world's first dual-frequency radar imaging satellite, will monitor Earth's land and ice surfaces with centimetre-level precision, regardless of weather or daylight. With a 12-meter radar antenna and weighing nearly three tonnes, the satellite is expected to transform global understanding of environmental changes, agriculture, and disaster response. Building India's space economy India's space sector is undergoing a major transformation, both in terms of scale and orientation. From being a primarily service-oriented organisation, Isro is now looking to leverage its research through commercial opportunities, following a favourable policy shift. According to a Ficci-EY report, as earlier reported by Business Standard, India's space economy is projected to grow more than fivefold to $44 billion by 2033 from $8.4 billion in 2022. Communication systems, Earth observation, satellite manufacturing, and navigation services are expected to drive this growth. Moreover, $11 billion in space technology exports are expected by 2033, while $22 billion in investment will be required over the next decade to meet industry goals. Communication services are projected to grow to $14.8 billion by 2033 from $4.19 billion in 2022, while Earth observation is expected to jump from $520 million to $8 billion in the same period. Space private sector, startups get a boost The private sector is also being brought into the fold in a big way. With over 300 space-tech startups now part of the ecosystem, the government has committed ₹3,500-₹4,000 crore to boost satellite development, alongside a ₹1,000 crore VC corpus to catalyse private investment. A total of 52 satellites are planned to be put into orbit over the next five years, as India eyes an 8 per cent share of the global space economy. In all, ₹25,000 crore is expected to flow to the private sector for satellite manufacturing.
