Bono opens up on U2 member who has final say on band's music
U2 frontman Bono has described the band as a "democracy".
The 65-year-old rocker explained how the iconic group – which also comprises The Edge, Adam Clayton and Larry Mullen Jr – all chip in with ideas for new music. However, the Beautiful Day singer added that it is usually the lead guitarist's suggestions that are given preference.
Asked how U2 work after more than 40 years in the industry, Bono said: "Bloody democracy. Thom Yorke from Radiohead says, 'A band is like the United Nations, except I'm America'. But U2 is an actual democracy. We all listen to each other, and then do what Edge says."
Bono takes centre stage in the new Apple TV+ documentary film Stories Of Surrender which documents a one-man performance he gave in New York in 2023 – although he doubts that his U2 bandmates are that interested in the project.
He said: "I think Larry only likes Westerns, Adam said he liked the moonwalk, so I think perhaps he was looking at a different film. Edge is always there. He's so supportive, especially when he sees me be open or be vulnerable, which is our definition of art."
The Dubliner describes the film as "very intimate" and revealed that he took inspiration from the late Beatles icon John Lennon for the project. Father-of-four Bono explained: "It was always, 'Break open the ribcage, show what's the heart, let it bleed'. That was the John Lennon way. So it starts with heart surgery."
Meanwhile, the singer recently teased that he wants U2 to make "the sound of the future" on their next album. The With Or Without You artist said on Jimmy Kimmel! Live: "We've been in the studio and you've sometimes got to deal with the past to get to the present, in order to make the sound of the future. That's what we want to do."
Bono also insisted that U2 continue to be very ambitious despite their long and successful career in music. He said: "It's the sound of four men, who feel like their lives depend on it. I remind them, they do.
"Nobody needs a new U2 album unless it's an extraordinary one. I'm feeling very strong about it."

Tomasz Zareba reversed his truck up close to the blaze on the third floor of a four-storey building at Granby Row last Tuesday, allowing the man to jump onto the roof. Amazingly, the Polish man said he then carried on with his job and "finished [his] deliveries for the day". Three fire victims were taken to hospital following the fire on June 24 – but many claim tragedy was avoided thanks to the Eurospar driver. And the capital's fire service recognised him with a special presentation yesterday evening. (Image: Twitter/Dublin Fire Brigade) They said: "Earlier this evening, our Chief Fire Officer presented Tomasz with a plaque to acknowledge his quick actions by positioning his delivery truck to assist in the rescue of people from a fire. Tomasz met with some of the Firefighter/Paramedics who were at the scene." Video footage showed Tomasz reversing the lorry under a window of the building as thick, black smoke and fire billowed out. After several seconds, a man leaps from the window on to the lorry and a loud impact noise can be heard amid gasps of onlookers. But the driver told us: "I just thought it would be much safer for him to jump on the lorry instead of the footpath. I saw the smoke coming from the window because my next delivery was just around the corner." He had blood on his face, and I think he might have broken both his legs when he jumped from the building. "Another guy was screaming from the window. He didn't know what he was supposed to do because he had flames behind him. There was a long drop below him. I reversed the lorry as close as I safely could to the window. The other lads from the footpath told him to jump on the roof of the lorry. He was OK I think." Tomasz said he waited in case someone else needed to jump from the window and then pulled in and waited for the fire brigade. He said: "I waited another 20 minutes because the road was blocked and then the fireman came over. "He said, 'Grand job buddy, thanks for that'. I went on to finish my deliveries for the day." A witness said: "He just saved someone an agonising death." Another added: "Incredible. Absolute hero. Many would have driven on." Someone else said: "Give that lorry driver a medal." In what feels like a perfect creative match, Sharon Horgan has signed on to executive produce the upcoming screen adaptation of I'm Glad My Mom Died, Jennette McCurdy's bestselling and darkly funny memoir. The IFTA winner will join Jennifer Aniston, who is also lined up to produce the upcoming Apple TV+ series, in which she also stars. The 10-episode dramedy, seeks to explore the complexities of fame, family, and identity, and is being developed by Apple Studios. '90s Dublin pop band reunites for upcoming album
Two original members of '90s Dublin pop band SWIM have reunited to record their upcoming album NIGHTSTOCK. After more than three decades apart, vocalist Joe Reilly and composer John McCrea reconnected in 2025 with the intention of creating and releasing new material. According to a statement, Reilly sought freedom to express himself through lyricism while McCrea endeavoured to break from the norm of conventional song structure. NIGHTSTOCK is the product of the duo's new experimental approach to songwriting. The seven tracks on the album were recorded in just a few sessions with Reilly, McCrea and producer Ger McDonnell, whose credits include U2, Dido, Def Leppard and more. 'Tony's House,' the first single from the album, is set to be released this Friday, July 4, with a music video directed by Cork videographer George Hogan. Reilly said the concepts for 'Tony's House' came in a stroke of inspiration while reading an Edward Hopper art book in between recording sessions. 'During the recording sessions for NIGHTSTOCK, the band were experiencing some difficulty with one of the longer pieces on the album and decided to take a break. I was flicking through 'The Paintings of Edward Hopper' and the painting 'Tony's House' in particular caught my imagination,' Reilly said. 'Within half an hour, I had come up with the lyrics for 'Tony's House,' the song. Having shown the lyrics to John, the music was quickly composed, and the accompanying keyboard track was recorded in one take. The vocals were put down in a few passes, and so 'Tony's House' appeared within a matter of hours. Ger then added his usual studio magic, et voilà.' SWIM were first formed in 1988 with their freshman record, Sundrive Road, produced by Steely Dan's Gary Katz. After the release of Sundrive Road, the band toured with the likes of Fleetwood Mac and Cher. They disbanded in 1991 due to band members' reluctance to continue touring. In 2020, Hot Press included SWIM on a list of '90s Irish bands that could have been massive.' The entirety of NIGHTSTOCK will be released August 14 at the Kilkenny Arts Festival. The band currently have no plans to play live.
