Amid staff crunch, FDA to appoint 40 food safety officers this week
The drug department under the FDA is similarly stretched thin with only five field officers in the city. It may take another year to reach its required strength of 25 to 30 here.
Officials say the shortage significantly hampered inspections and enforcement, overburdening the limited staff. Following action taken against a Zepto facility in Dharavi on Sunday, FDA officials admitted they currently lack the manpower to inspect similar warehouses operated by delivery platforms.
"Food safety officers are the field workers who conduct sampling and routine inspections. Without adequate numbers, essential tasks like testing for milk adulteration or checking ice quality can't happen at the large scale required," said Mangesh Mane, joint commissioner (Food). Although over 40 officers are expected to be appointed within days, Mane said training will take another month or two. "We expect them to join the workforce by October," he added.

FDA commissioner Rajesh Narvekar said the food division has 350 sanctioned posts, but only 132 are filled, leaving a gap of 218 officers. After repeated proposals to the govt and the Maharashtra Public Service Commission, 194 food safety officers and 8 assistant commissioners were finally selected, bringing the department's total strength to just over 300.
However, according to food safety norms, one officer per 1,000 food business operators, the FDA needs at least 1,100 officers.
The drug department, meanwhile, has 200 sanctioned posts but only 48 filled, with 152 vacancies still open. A revised recruitment proposal has been submitted to MPSC, but officials say it will take another year. The persistent shortfall is largely due to a prolonged pause in recruitment drives and a wave of retirements, promotions, and transfers over the past year or more.
"We are meeting our targets by working extra hours.
Leaves are being sacrificed, but we're trying not to let it affect our functioning," said an official from the drug department.
Still, gaps remain. "There's no major problem due to shortfall in issuing manufacturing licenses after conducting their inspections," said Narvekar. "The problem is in monitoring retailers and wholesalers," he added. Abhay Pandey, president of the All Food and Drug Licence Holders Foundation, warned of serious public health consequences. "Random sampling at retail stores and distributor levels simply isn't happening for more than a year at a scale it should.
Without it, there's no way to ensure quality control," he said.

Nuclear inspectors have left Iran: UN watchdog
UN nuclear watchdog inspectors left Iran on Friday, according to the agency, which called for the resumption of its "indispensable monitoring" after the Islamic republic officially suspended its cooperation. The suspension came after last month's 12-day conflict between Iran and Israel, which saw unprecedented Israeli and US strikes on Iran's nuclear facilities and escalated tensions between Tehran and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). "An IAEA team of inspectors today safely departed from Iran to return to the agency headquarters in Vienna, after staying in Tehran throughout the recent military conflict," the IAEA said in a post on X. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 2 capsules per dag! Iran officially suspended its cooperation with the UN nuclear watchdog on Wednesday. Live Events On June 25, a day after a ceasefire took hold, Iranian lawmakers voted overwhelmingly to suspend the cooperation. The law aims to "ensure full support for the inherent rights of the Islamic Republic of Iran" under the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, with a particular focus on uranium enrichment, according to Iranian media. Washington, which has been pressing Tehran to resume the negotiations that were interrupted by Israel's resort to military action on June 13, has hit out at the Iranian decision, calling it "unacceptable".

Not the lowest, but the sharpest: Road ministry overhauls bidding game for DPRs
In a significant policy shift, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has decided to discontinue the use of the least cost (L1) bidding system for awarding consultancy contracts to prepare detailed project reports (DPRs), reported TOI. All highway implementing agencies under the ministry, including the National Highways Authority of India ( NHAI ), will now adopt a system where bidders are evaluated based on the highest technical score (T1), with a fixed consultancy fee , as per the TOI report. Under the new model, the consultancy fee will be predetermined by the agency, and companies will be selected based on their technical capabilities and track record. Officials said the shift aims to prioritise quality over cost and has shown positive results since its implementation by NHAI in September last year. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Join new Free to Play WWII MMO War Thunder War Thunder Play Now Undo 'The new provision of rating of bidders and assigning 30% marks for technical score will further bring quality players to bid for projects,' a senior official said. The change comes amid growing concerns about the deteriorating quality of project preparation due to consultants securing projects at extremely low and unsustainable rates. In some instances, firms quoted as little as Rs 70,000 to Rs 80,000 per kilometre for DPR preparation—an amount officials said is inadequate even for basic field surveys. By comparison, the revised fixed cost of Rs 4–5 lakh per km for a 4-6 lane highway constitutes roughly 0.5% of the total project cost, while in countries like Japan and Australia, DPR costs can account for up to 10% of project expenses. Live Events Officials acknowledged that poor-quality DPRs have led to delays and execution issues in highway projects. The revised framework includes incentives for firms employing key personnel from leading technical institutes such as IITs and NITs, further encouraging participation from experienced players. 'The entire framework of technical score, including the marks for ratings, is aimed at getting serious and quality players to bid for DPR works,' TOI quoted an NHAI official as saying.
