Bosnia's prosecutor lifts arrest warrant against separatist Serb leader
BELGRADE - Bosnia's prosecutor's office said it had lifted an arrest warrant against separatist Serb leader Milorad Dodik after he surprisingly appeared at a hearing investigating allegations against him of violating the constitutional order.
After months of ignoring summons to attend the prosecutor's office to answer questions, Dodik appeared at a hearing on Friday, authorities said in a statement issued late on Friday.
Dodik is a long-time advocate of the secession of the autonomous Serb Republic, one of two regions in Bosnia linked by a weak central government, and the crisis precipitated by his separatist push represents one of the biggest threats to peace in the Balkans since the 1990s conflicts that followed Yugoslavia's collapse.
In February, he was sentenced to one year in jail and banned from holding office for six years for defying the decisions of an international peace envoy, the ultimate interpreter of Bosnia's constitution under the Dayton peace accords that ended the 1992-95 war in which 100,000 people were killed.
In March, Bosnian state prosecutors ordered Dodik's arrest for ignoring a court summons.
Following Friday's hearing, Bosnia's prosecutor's office and the court issued a statement saying that the arrest warrant for him was withdrawn, though he will still have to report periodically to state authorities. REUTERS

The migrants are now being taken to Crete, Greece's largest and most populous island. Sea arrivals from northeastern Libya of migrants trying to cross to Europe have surged in recent months. They mainly come from the Middle East and North Africa, including nationals from war-torn Sudan and citizens of Egypt and Bangladesh. Last month Athens said it would deploy two frigates near Libyan territorial waters to help stem the flow. It also urged Libya to cooperate more closely with Greece and the EU to stop migrants sailing from there or turn them back before they exit Libyan territorial waters. In another incident on Sunday, a Greek media outlet published footage showing dozens of migrants jumping off a speed boat into the water before reaching the shores of southern Crete. The Supreme Court ruling last year overturned a decades-old exemption for ultra-Orthodox students, a policy established when the community comprised a far smaller segment of the population than the 13% it represents today. Military service is compulsory for most Israeli Jews from the age of 18, lasting 24-32 months, with additional reserve duty in subsequent years. Members of Israel's 21% Arab population are mostly exempt, though some do serve. A statement by the military spokesperson confirmed the orders on Sunday just as local media reported legislative efforts by two ultra-Orthodox parties in Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's coalition to craft a compromise. The exemption issue has grown more contentious as Israel's armed forces in recent years have faced strains from simultaneous engagements with Hamas in Gaza, Hezbollah in Lebanon, Houthis in Yemen, and Iran. Ultra-Orthodox leaders in Netanyahu's brittle coalition have voiced concerns that integrating seminary students into military units alongside secular Israelis, including women, could jeopardize their religious identity. The military statement promised to ensure conditions that respect the ultra-Orthodox way of life and to develop additional programmes to support their integration into the military. Dog freed from hot locker after owner puts it inside to tour castle in Germany

BERLIN - A dog was rescued from a locker for valuables at Neuschwanstein Castle in southern Germany after its owner shut her pet inside over the objections of other tourists so that she could visit the famous attraction, police said on July 6. Neuschwanstein, a picture-postcard castle with surging turrets nestled in the Alps near the border with Austria, is one of Germany's top tourist attractions. Despite it being a hot summer's day and half the locker already having been filled by a pram, the woman locked the dog inside the small space and left to tour the castle, police in the nearby town of Fuessen said in a statement. Security staff were alerted and freed the dog, they added. 'The dog was fortunately unharmed but visibly glad when it was rescued from the already hot locker,' the police statement said, adding that officers deployed to the scene took him back to the police station. The police did not specify what breed the dog was but said it was of 'medium' size and about 60cm tall at the shoulder. An officer on duty at Fuessen police station contacted by telephone said the dog was a mongrel.
