Ringgit likely range-bound next week as market waits on BNM's next move, says analyst
Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Dr Mohd Afzanizam Abdul Rashid said the local note is likely to stay steady, with market participants focusing on the central bank's upcoming decision.
'The outcome of the meeting could shape the ringgit's near-term trajectory. We are calling for a 25 basis-point cut in the overnight policy rate (OPR), as the need for monetary support has grown given the increasingly challenging macroeconomic outlook for the second half of 2025,' he told Bernama.
Mohd Afzanizam said subdued global demand, ongoing geopolitical tensions and signs of moderating domestic activity may lead the central bank to adopt a more accommodative stance.
'In the absence of major external shocks, the ringgit is expected to trade within a narrow band of RM4.22 to RM4.23 against the greenback throughout the week,' he added.
The ringgit ended the week higher against the greenback, closing at 4.2180/2260 from 4.2300/2355 last Friday.
The local note traded mostly higher against a basket of major currencies.
The ringgit appreciated vis-a-vis the Japanese yen to 2.9225/9282 from 2.9359/9399, and increased against the British pound to 5.7601/7710 from 5.8141/8217.
However, it fell versus the euro to 4.9675/9770 from 4.9597/9661 at the end of last week.
The ringgit also traded mostly higher against ASEAN currencies.
The local note improved against the Singapore dollar to 3.3114/3182 from 3.3192/3240, enhanced versus the Indonesian rupiah to 260.6/261.2 from 260.9/261.4, while it weakened versus the Thai baht to 13.0302/0609 from 13.0254/0488, previously.
It was unchanged against the Philippine peso at 7.47/7.49. — Bernama

KLUANG, July 6 — The development of the Johor–Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ) is expected to benefit not only areas surrounding Johor Baru but also be felt across all 10 districts in the state, said Johor Chief Minister Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi. He said the initiative would lead to the emergence of more satellite towns, ensuring that no district is left behind in terms of infrastructure and progress. In addition to driving economic growth, JS-SEZ would also serve as a catalyst for the tourism sector, positioning Johor as a major destination, he noted. The state government, he said, would seize the opportunity to promote attractions throughout Johor in conjunction with the upcoming Visit Johor Year. 'Bit by bit, areas surrounding JS-SEZ are beginning to experience the spillover effects of development. For example, the areas of Simpang Renggam and Renggam in Kluang are already seeing its impact. This progress will gradually expand to other districts. 'If Seremban is known as a satellite city to the Klang Valley, we expect Kluang to become one of the main satellite cities as a result of the JS–SEZ development,' he said at the launch of the Majestic Johor x Renggam Fiesta at Tunku Mahkota Ismail Youth Centre (TMIYC) Renggam today. The JS-SEZ covers major development zones such as Iskandar Malaysia, Forest City, the Pengerang Integrated Petroleum Complex, and Desaru, with a total land area of approximately 357,128 hectares. The Iskandar Malaysia region also includes strategic areas such as Johor Bahru City Centre, Iskandar Puteri, Tanjung Pelepas — Tanjung Bin, Pasir Gudang, Senai — Skudai, and Sedenak. Further commenting, Onn Hafiz said that rapid development in the transport sector would also support connections between districts and the JS-SEZ, including the Johor Bahru–Singapore Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link Project and the Gemas-Johor Bahru Double Track Electrified Project. Selangor to enforce ‘No Plastic Bag Day' across all 12 local councils by early 2026
KLANG, July 6 — The Selangor government is in the final phase of amending the relevant by-laws to standardise the implementation of the No Plastic Bag Day initiative across all 12 local authorities (PBTs) in the state. State Public Health and Environment Committee chairman Jamaliah Jamaluddin said the move was part of a three-pronged approach to systematically and comprehensively address the plastic pollution in the state. 'The amendment process is expected to be completed this year, with wider enforcement of the No Plastic Bag Day to begin early next year,' she said in her speech during the Plastic Free Campaign Series 2 2025, officiated by Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari here today. Jamaliah said the state government would forge strategic partnerships with various parties to ensure the success of the plastic-free campaign. 'For example, present with us today are various parties who play an important role in tackling plastic pollution through awareness initiatives, recycling innovations, upcycling efforts and the provision of environmentally friendly alternatives, thereby supporting a sustainable and plastic-free lifestyle,' she said. Meanwhile, Jamaliah said the state government would continue to strengthen efforts to promote a plastic-free and environmentally friendly lifestyle through initiatives at the PBT level, as well as collaborations with schools and educational institutions in Selangor. 'Recognising that many parties in the state are actively working to reduce plastic use, the portal, which is currently being updated, will serve as a platform to bring together strategic partners and coordinate participation in the plastic-free campaign. 'Through this platform, organisers such as PBTs and schools can collaborate with non-governmental organisations, companies, social entrepreneurs and local communities, thereby encouraging the sharing of information, ideas and resources towards making a plastic-free lifestyle a daily practice among the people of Selangor,' she said. On the campaign, Jamaliah said the programme, which was first held in Sepang in May, was carried out without the use of plastic, relying instead on environmentally friendly and reusable materials to raise participants' awareness of the importance of caring for the environment.
