Women's EURO 2025: Germany awaits news about captain Giulia Gwinn's latest knee injury
The 26-year-old Gwinn injured her knee while making a likely goal-saving tacking on Poland captain Ewa Pajor during Germany's 2-0 win on Friday. She had to be supported off the field in tears after getting hugs from teammates.
Gwinn, who previously had two cruciate ligament injuries, was to have an MRI in Zurich on Saturday to determine the extent of the injury. Gwinn missed the 2023 World Cup while she recovered from the second cruciate injury.
'We all know Giulia's history. We're all, all of us, keeping our fingers crossed that it's nothing so serious,' Germany vice-captain Janina Minge said. 'We have to stand together as a team, to stand with her and hope for the best.'
Jule Brand, who scored one goal and set up the other on Friday, said Gwinn's injury was a 'shock for us all. When Giuli is down then it's never good because she always gets straight back up again.'
Gwinn tore the ACL in her right knee in a European qualifier against Ireland in September 2020, then suffered the same injury again in her left knee while training with Germany in October 2022.
ACL injuries can vary in severity but can mean as much as a year off if surgery is required. Already this year, Germany goalkeeper Sophia Winkler and midfielder Marie Müller suffered cruciate ligament injuries.
Germany star Lena Oberdorf, Gwinn's teammate at Bayern Munich, didn't make the squad because she's still working her way back from her knee injury sustained nearly a year ago in a win over Austria. Bayern's Carolin Simon missed the 2023 World Cup with the same injury.

Mairaj, Ganemat, best placed after skeet round one in Lonato
New Delhi, Jul 06 (UNI) India's most successful men's and women's skeet shooters at this level, Mairaj Ahmad Khan and Ganemat Sekhon, got themselves into good positions on day one of competitions at the International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) World Cup Shotgun, in Lonato, Italy, on Sunday. Mairaj shot rounds of 24 and 25 in men's skeet while Ganemat shot 23 and 25 in the women's event, to emerge best placed among six Indians (three in each event) in contention. With three more qualifying rounds coming up over the next two days ahead of the final on Tuesday, their chances of making the top six look brightest, given both are one behind the leading pack. Ganemat, with two individual World Cup medals to her name and a finalist here in 2023, is in ninth spot, having shot a 25 in her second qualifying round, after opening with a 23. Six women led by Mexican Gabriela Rodriguez are leading with 49 points each. Olympians Maheshwari Chauhan (24, 22) and Raiza Dhillon (22, 23), were further down in the pecking order. In men's skeet, Olympian Mairaj Ahmad Khan, also a winner of two individual world cup medals including a gold, had a perfect second round as well to end the day on 49 hits. At least 15 shooters in the huge 176-strong (including RPOs) field, have shot scores of 50 each. Young Bhavtegh Gill also finished with a perfect 25 round to follow a 23, while Olympian Anant Jeet Singh Naruka missed one target in each of his two rounds.
