‘I posted about it on my Instagram first': Animesh Kujur reacts after breaking the national record in men's 100m sprint

Hindustan Times4 days ago
At just 22, Animesh Kunjur has sprinted his way into Indian athletics history. Over the weekend, at the at the Dromia International Sprint and Relays Meeting in Vari, Greece, the young sprinter from Chhattisgarh clocked 10.18 seconds in the 100m — a time that not only smashed the previous national record but also earned him a new title: India's fastest man. Animesh Kujur after breaking the national record in men's 100m sprint
'Honestly, I didn't realise I had broken the record at first,' he tells us, still riding the high of the achievement. 'I knew I had run a strong race and thought I was somewhere around 10.2. When my coach confirmed it was 10.18, I was shocked. The first thing I did? I pinned it to my Instagram profile,' he laughs.
Animesh isn't new to rewriting record books. Just last month, he set the national 200m record with a stunning 20.32-second finish at the Asian Athletics Championships in South Korea, clinching a bronze medal despite battling a fever and chest infection. He's also part of the record-holding 4x100m relay team, making him a triple national record holder.
'It feels surreal (to be a triple national record holder). It was only during the pandemic, that I realised my passion for athletics, and all I have ever wanted to do since then is do well, and make everyone around me proud of me,' he says.
With his calm demeanour and clear focus, it's no surprise that Animesh is setting his sights higher. 'The World Championships are next. I want to test myself against the best — not just to participate, but to truly compete,' he says.
Does the India's fastest man tag add pressure? 'A little, maybe' he admits, but more than that, Animesh is humbled by the tag. 'It's also a privilege. To see so many people refer to me as India's fastest man is honestly a dream come true and a validation of all the hardwork I have put in so far. It's motivation. Every time I step onto the track, it spurs me on to do even better," he ends.

Shubman Gill vs Zak Crawley: 'We call it Tamasha' - Ex-India coach on fiery last-over scenes at Lord's

India's Shubman Gill and England's Zak Crawley have words at the end of the third day during the third cricket test match between England and India at Lord's cricket ground in London, Saturday, July 12, 2025. (Bradley Collyer/PA via AP) Former India coach Ravi Shastri has reacted to the on-field drama that unfolded in the last over of Day 3 between Shubman Gill and England opener Zak Crawley at Lord's. England and India accused each other of sharp practice after Crawley's conduct on Saturday drew an angry reaction from India captain Shubman Gill. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. Crawley ensured there were only six deliveries from Jasprit Bumrah before stumps by twice withdrawing from his stance and then calling for the physio after the fifth ball, which appeared to make only minimal contact with his glove. Tempers flared as it became evident that India would not be able to bowl another over before the close. Host broadcaster Sky Sports even issued an on-air apology after a stump microphone picked up Gill swearing angrily at Crawley. Crawley and Gill jabbed fingers at each other as they exchanged choice words, with England's other opener, Ben Duckett, also getting involved. Why Shubman Gill, Jasprit Bumrah lost their cool in last five minutes of Day 3 vs England 'If I'm wearing the Indian hat, I would have done all that, you know,' Ravi Shastri told Sky Cricket. 'We call it Tamasha. All that is allowed, you know—on the field of play, you want all that. You can't just have 'good morning, good evening, go home'. A little bit of argy-bargy is okay! As long as you don't cross the line, I'm okay with all that.' by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Dukung Orang Terkasih Menghadapi Limfoma: Mulai Di Sini Limfoma Klik Di Sini Undo Tim Southee, England's bowling consultant, suggested Gill was guilty of double standards after delaying the end of England's innings on Day 2 to receive treatment, while India all-rounder Washington Sundar also held up proceedings during his batting stint for what appeared to be a comfort break. 'I'm not sure what they were complaining about when Gill was lying down getting a massage in the middle of the day yesterday,' Southee told reporters after stumps on Saturday. 'It's obviously part of the game. It's always exciting to see both sides animated towards the end, and it was an exciting way to finish the day. It was good to see energy from both sides.' 'Injured' Arshad Nadeem Keen To Face Neeraj Chopra, Showdown Likely On...

Pakistan's Olympic gold medallist javelin thrower Arshad Nadeem has suffered a "hamstring niggle" and he's travelling to England to treat the injury before his face-off with Indian superstar Neeraj Chopra at the Silesia Diamond League on August 16, according to sources. A source close to Nadeem said the hamstring problem forced him to skip an event in Switzerland and he is travelling to England on Monday to get the injury treated by specialists as well as prepare for the DL Meeting in Silesia, Poland. "The reason for going to England is to get the hamstring problem treated and also to train for the Diamond League," he said. The source said that Nadeem will travel directly from England to Poland next month. "This is also the reason why he (Nadeem) skipped an event in Switzerland as he doesn't want to take a risk with the hamstring niggle." Chopra and Nadeem will be facing each other in Silesia one year after the mouth-watering men's javelin competition in Paris on August 8, 2024, when the Pakistani had beaten the Indian for the gold with a stunning 92.97m throw. The 27-year-old Chopra, who had won gold in Tokyo Olympics in 2021, had to settle for a silver in Paris with a best throw of 89.45m. The men's javelin duel between the reigning world champion and reigning Olympic gold medallist is set to be one of the main attractions of the Silesia DL, more so after Chopra crossed the coveted 90m mark in Doha in his first DL competition of the year on May 16. Since the Paris Games, Chopra has participated in several competitions, including four Diamond League meetings, two other top-class events in Chorzow, Poland and Ostrava, Czech Republic, as well as the inaugural NC Classic in Bengaluru which he won as host. The 28-year-old Nadeem, on the other hand, ended his 2024 season with the Paris Olympics gold and has taken part in just one competition so far this year. He won gold in the Asian Championships in Gumi, South Korea, on May 31 with a throw of 86.40m. Nadeem was, in fact, invited by Chopra for the NC Classic when it was initially planned to be held on May 24, but the Pakistani had declined that offer on the ground that it would clash with his preparations for the Asian Championships (May 27-31). The NC Classic, though, was later postponed due to the military conflict between India and Pakistan after the Pahalgam terror attack which killed 26 tourists, and then held on July 5.
