Dalit sanitation workers allege caste abuse by Melpathi panchayat president in TN

VILLUPURAM: The Tamil Nadu government has directed the Villupuram SP to inquire into allegations of caste-based discrimination against four Dalit sanitation workers in Melpathi village. The directive from the deputy secretary (Home Department) follows a petition submitted to the chief minister's special cell.
G Muniyammal (47), one of the workers, alleged that she and three others were forced to clean human faeces with bare hands and subjected to repeated caste-based abuse by Melpathi panchayat president R Manivel and a few Caste Hindu members. They also accused local police officers of coercing the workers into withdrawing the complaint.
The four workers - Muniyammal, K Athilakshmi, S Nagaraj, and P Govindaraj - collect household waste in the village. Following the attack on a Dalit family by the caste Hindus allegedly for entering the Shri Dharmaraja Draupathi Amman Temple on April 7, 2023, the workers said they are being humiliated publicly and unfairly blamed for the temple dispute. The workers stated that the discrimination, verbal abuse, and physical intimidation from the panchayat president has become unbearable over the past two years.
'We were mocked, threatened, and assigned demeaning tasks. We were told not to enter certain streets and they made us feel like we didn't belong here. We were even forced to clean human faeces with bare hands,' Muniyammal told TNIE. 'They even forced us to sign blank papers that were later fabricated to claim that we have withdrawn the complaint.' Despite repeated appeals to panchayat officials, including vice president Selvam, and sanitation supervisor Kavitha, no action has been taken, the workers said in the complaint.

Fadnavis criticises Thackeray cousins' victory rally as lacking substance, compares it to wailing of Rudali

Pune: Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis on Saturday took a swipe at the Thackeray cousins' joint rally in Mumbai earlier in the day and said instead of a triumphant rally for the Marathi language, it turned out to be a hollow speech, resembling the wailing of Rudali (woman professional mourner). "I was told that it would be a victory speech, but there was one Rudali speech also. Instead of speaking about the Marathi language, it was Rudali mentioning how their govt was pulled down. There was no victory speech in Marathi," Fadnavis said, without taking any names, after reaching Pandharpur on the eve of Ashadhi Ekadashi. He would lead a special puja at the revered Vitthal Rakhumai temple with his wife Amruta, on behalf of state govt, on Sunday. While the CM was in Pandharpur, MNS chief Raj Thackeray, in his speech at the victory rally in Worli with Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray , sarcastically said his uncle and Sena founder late Balasaheb Thackeray could not unite him and Uddhav, but Fadnavis' governance brought them together after 18 years. "They could not do any notable work. But we changed the face of Mumbai under the leadership of PM Narendra Modi at the Centre. Under their (Uddhav Thackeray) leadership, Marathi Manoos had to leave Mumbai. But when we formed govt, we ensured that the Marathi Manoos of BDD chawl, Patra chawl and Abhyuday Nagar got rehabilitated at the same place. Yeah public hai, sab janti hai (The public knows everything)," the CM said. "Be it Marathi or non-Marathi people of Mumbai, they all are with us. We are proud Marathi, but at the same time, we are proud Hindus too. Our Hindutva takes everybody along," Fadnavis added.

"I must be getting blessings of Balasaheb Thackeray": CM Fadnavis responds to Raj Thackeray's remark

Solapur (Maharashtra) [India], July 5 (ANI): Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Saturday said that he must be receiving the blessings of Shiv Sena founder Bal Thackeray after the estranged Thackeray cousins, Uddhav and Raj, shared the public stage for the first time in nearly 20 years. The remarks of the Maharashtra Chief Minister came in response to Raj Thackeray's veiled attack on the former, where the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief stated, 'What Balasaheb could not do, Devendra Fadnavis did it'. 'I express my gratitude to Raj Thackeray that he gave me the credit for the coming together of both the brothers; I must be getting the blessings of Balasaheb Thackeray. I was told that there would be a victory rally, but there was also a speech of 'rudaali'. Not a single word was spoken about Marathi... The Mumbai Municipal Corporation was under their control for 25 years. Still, they did not do any work that could be shown,' Chief Minister said. 'We changed the face of Mumbai under the leadership of PM Modi. They are jealous of the work we did for Mumbai, but the public knows everything, and everyone is on our side,' he added. On the language row brewing up in the state, CM Fadnavis said that the ideology of Hindutva takes everyone. 'We are Marathi, we are proud of being Marathi, we are proud of the Marathi language, but at the same time, we are also Hindus; our Hindutva takes everyone along,' he said. Earlier, at a joint rally, Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray launched a veiled attack on Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and said that the Chief Minister did what could not be possible for Balasaheb Thackeray, as he brought the two estranged brothers of the Thackeray family together. 'I had said in one of my interviews that my Maharashtra is bigger than any politics and fight. Today, after 20 years, Uddhav and I have come together. What Balasaheb could not do, Devendra Fadnavis did it... The work of bringing both of us together,' he said. Shiv Sena (UBT) Chief Uddhav Thackeray and MNS chief Raj Thackeray shared a hug at the Worli Dome in Mumbai as they held a joint rally after the Maharashtra government scrapped two Government Resolutions (GRs) to introduce Hindi as the third language. Speaking on the occasion, Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi on Saturday expressed happiness over the 'Awaaz Marathicha' joint rally held by Shiv Sena (UBT) and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) and stated that she 'witnessed a historic' moment. Priyanka Chaturvedi said that both Uddhav and Raj Thackeray have come together after 20 years, and this was evident from the excitement of the people. 'We have witnessed a historic moment. As Raj Thackeray said, what Balasaheb couldn't do, Devendra Fadnavis has done. This shows that they will stay united. Both of them have come together after 20 years. The excitement of people shows that they wanted both of them to come together', Priyanka Chaturvedi said. (ANI)

Supreme Court notifies quota for OBCs, SCs and STs in direct staff recruitments

The Supreme Court has notified amendments in its staff recruitment rules to introduce reservation for the Other Backward Classes (OBCs), along with the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes. In a reform of a sweeping nature, Chief Justice of India B.R. Gavai, who is only the second Dalit top judge of the country, also extended the benefit of reservation in the court's non-judicial staff jobs to the physically challenged, ex-servicemen, and dependents of freedom fighters. The decision of Chief Justice Gavai to amend Rule 4A of the Supreme Court Officers and Servants (Conditions of Service and Conduct) Rules, 1961, was exercised under Article 146(2) of the Constitution. Quota as per govt. norm The notification issued in the Official Gazette on July 3 clarified that the reservation in direct staff recruitments to the Supreme Court would follow the rules, orders and notifications issued by the Union Government. 'Reservation in direct recruitment to various categories of posts specified in the schedule for the candidates belonging to Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, Other Backward Classes, physically challenged, ex-servicemen and dependent of freedom fighters shall be in accordance with the rules, orders, and notifications issued from time to time by the Government of India in respect of posts carrying the pay scale corresponding to the pay scale prescribed for the post specified in the schedule, subject to such modification, variation or exception as the Chief Justice may, from time to time, specify,' the notification read. Historic, says MP Rajya Sabha member and senior advocate P. Wilson, who had pushed for OBC reservation in staff recruitments to the Supreme Court, said in a social media post that the amendment of Rule 4A 'ensured alignment with national standards of affirmative action'. He termed the amendment a 'historic reform'. However, the reservation for OBCs in its staff recruitments comes over 33 years after a nine-judge Bench of the Supreme Court in the Indira Sawhney judgment of November 1992 validated 27% reservation for the category in Central government services. Chief Justice Gavai took the initiative to introduce a roster system to recruit candidates from the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes as Supreme Court staff. The move came three decades after the court itself had declared in a Constitution Bench judgment in the RK Sabharwal case that a 200-point roster system would ensure equitable distribution of jobs between the general and reserved categories.
