Dalit sanitation workers allege caste abuse by Melpathi panchayat president in TN
G Muniyammal (47), one of the workers, alleged that she and three others were forced to clean human faeces with bare hands and subjected to repeated caste-based abuse by Melpathi panchayat president R Manivel and a few Caste Hindu members. They also accused local police officers of coercing the workers into withdrawing the complaint.
The four workers - Muniyammal, K Athilakshmi, S Nagaraj, and P Govindaraj - collect household waste in the village. Following the attack on a Dalit family by the caste Hindus allegedly for entering the Shri Dharmaraja Draupathi Amman Temple on April 7, 2023, the workers said they are being humiliated publicly and unfairly blamed for the temple dispute. The workers stated that the discrimination, verbal abuse, and physical intimidation from the panchayat president has become unbearable over the past two years.
'We were mocked, threatened, and assigned demeaning tasks. We were told not to enter certain streets and they made us feel like we didn't belong here. We were even forced to clean human faeces with bare hands,' Muniyammal told TNIE. 'They even forced us to sign blank papers that were later fabricated to claim that we have withdrawn the complaint.' Despite repeated appeals to panchayat officials, including vice president Selvam, and sanitation supervisor Kavitha, no action has been taken, the workers said in the complaint.

The remarks of the Maharashtra Chief Minister came in response to Raj Thackeray's veiled attack on the former, where the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief stated, 'What Balasaheb could not do, Devendra Fadnavis did it'. 'I express my gratitude to Raj Thackeray that he gave me the credit for the coming together of both the brothers; I must be getting the blessings of Balasaheb Thackeray. Supreme Court notifies quota for OBCs, SCs and STs in direct staff recruitments
The Supreme Court has notified amendments in its staff recruitment rules to introduce reservation for the Other Backward Classes (OBCs), along with the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes. In a reform of a sweeping nature, Chief Justice of India B.R. Gavai, who is only the second Dalit top judge of the country, also extended the benefit of reservation in the court's non-judicial staff jobs to the physically challenged, ex-servicemen, and dependents of freedom fighters. The decision of Chief Justice Gavai to amend Rule 4A of the Supreme Court Officers and Servants (Conditions of Service and Conduct) Rules, 1961, was exercised under Article 146(2) of the Constitution. Quota as per govt. norm The notification issued in the Official Gazette on July 3 clarified that the reservation in direct staff recruitments to the Supreme Court would follow the rules, orders and notifications issued by the Union Government. 'Reservation in direct recruitment to various categories of posts specified in the schedule for the candidates belonging to Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, Other Backward Classes, physically challenged, ex-servicemen and dependent of freedom fighters shall be in accordance with the rules, orders, and notifications issued from time to time by the Government of India in respect of posts carrying the pay scale corresponding to the pay scale prescribed for the post specified in the schedule, subject to such modification, variation or exception as the Chief Justice may, from time to time, specify,' the notification read. Historic, says MP Rajya Sabha member and senior advocate P. Wilson, who had pushed for OBC reservation in staff recruitments to the Supreme Court, said in a social media post that the amendment of Rule 4A 'ensured alignment with national standards of affirmative action'. He termed the amendment a 'historic reform'. However, the reservation for OBCs in its staff recruitments comes over 33 years after a nine-judge Bench of the Supreme Court in the Indira Sawhney judgment of November 1992 validated 27% reservation for the category in Central government services. Chief Justice Gavai took the initiative to introduce a roster system to recruit candidates from the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes as Supreme Court staff. The move came three decades after the court itself had declared in a Constitution Bench judgment in the RK Sabharwal case that a 200-point roster system would ensure equitable distribution of jobs between the general and reserved categories.
