Thai cyber war room on alert for border-related attacks

Bangkok Post2 days ago
Thai authorities have established a 24-hour war room to monitor and respond to potential cyberattacks and other online misbehaviour arising from the conflict along the Thai-Cambodian border.
The Ministry of Digital Economy and Society has found evidence of attempts by hackers to launch cyberattacks on Thailand through distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks targeting government websites, minister Prasert Jantararuangtong said on Saturday.
The ministry is working with the Royal Thai Armed Forces and the National Cyber Security Agency (NCSA) to prevent any attempts to hack government websites. So far, no damage has been reported, said Mr Prasert, also a deputy prime minister.
'A 24-hour war room has been set up to closely monitor cybercrime attacks, both on the physical and cyber fronts. So far, the attacks have been contained, and the situation remains under control,' said Mr Prasert.
He also warned of a growing campaign of disinformation, allegedly originating from Cambodian sources. However, AI-created deepfakes, hate speech and other forms of bad online behaviour are not limited to one country.
'We are maintaining round-the-clock surveillance of cyber warfare activities, both in real-time and in the digital domain,' said the minister.
'There have also been efforts to spread disinformation, such as false claims about a Thai F-16 being shot down or Cambodian forces reclaiming ancient temples from Thailand. These reports are untrue,' he said.
The DE Ministry is actively countering false narratives by issuing clarifications and blocking the spread of disinformation across digital platforms.
'We are committed to ensuring the Thai public has access to accurate information,' said the minister.

Thai army urges calm amid Cambodian long-range rocket talk

The Royal Thai Army (RTA) has urged the public to remain calm following widespread reports that Cambodia may deploy long-range rocket launchers capable of striking targets within a 130-kilometre radius. The army said there is no confirmation regarding the location or likelihood of such deployment. Army spokesman Maj Gen Winthai Suvaree said the reports stem from unverified intelligence and there is currently no indication of any deployment or targeting of PHL-03 rocket launchers. His remarks came in response to social media warnings issued to residents in several northeastern provinces, including Ubon Ratchathani, Surin, Si Sa Ket, and Buri Ram, as well as parts of Yasothon, Roi Et, Maha Sarakham, and Nakhon Ratchasima. Citizens were urged to stay alert and follow the news. In response, the Royal Thai Air Force deployed F-16 and Gripen fighter jets to neutralise artillery positions near the Ta Kwai and Ta Muen Thom temple areas.

Evacuee slams Thai PM Paetongtarn for indifference

Suspended Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra has visited an evacuation centre in Surin province amid escalating tension along the border with Cambodia, where she was admonished by an evacuee who blasted the government's indifference and slow reaction. Ms Paetongtarn visited this northeastern province on Sunday to offer moral support and distribute basic supplies to residents who have been displaced by the border skirmishes. However, the visit was marked by public frustration over the government's handling of the conflict, with one displaced resident confronting the suspended premier for her indifference to the plight of those affected. After arriving in Surin shortly after noon on Sunday, Ms Paetongtarn made her way to a shelter in Muang district to offer support and distribute supplies. As she arrived at the shelter, Chayanuch Choksukudom, who was displaced from her home in Kap Choeng district along the border, approached her to express her plight. However, upon stepping out of her vehicle, Ms Paetongtarn proceeded directly into the shelter, seemingly unaware of the woman's presence. An aide informed Ms Chayanuch that the premier would return to speak to her, to which she responded emotionally: 'So heartless.' Speaking to the media afterward, Ms Chayanuch expressed deep disappointment over what she perceived as the prime minister's indifference. 'I feel so hurt by Ung Ing's words,' she said, referring to the prime minister by her nickname. 'The government's handling [of the border situation] is very slow. Thai people should not die in vain. Right now, the whole country is in pain.' She urged Ms Paetongtarn to reconsider her approach. 'I want her to truly open her heart and see how much we're suffering. We understand there are interests involved, but please, think again and act anew — for the nation and its people,' Ms Chayanuch said. She was referring to critics' claim that the border flare-up was due to a personal dispute between her father Thaksin and Cambodian strongman Hun Sen — an accusation which the ruling Pheu Thai Party has denied. Ms Paetongtarn has been suspended from acting as prime minister since the beginning of this month pending a court ruling on her controversial phone call with Cambodian Senate President Hun Sen. She holds a concurrent cabinet position as the culture minister.
