Perhentian boat tragedy: Police probe capsizing, skipper tests positive for drugs
Terengganu police chief Datuk Mohd Khairi Khairuddin said the statements were recorded from three individuals, two men and a woman, aged between 22 and 39, to assist in the investigation.
'We have recorded statements from one of the passengers, the boat skipper, and the boat skipper's brother. More witnesses will be called in to assist with the investigation,' he said.
'All survivors will be called in to provide statements so we can determine what truly happened. Much of what's being circulated now is based on hearsay. Through this investigation, there may be additional evidence we can document,' he said during the duty handover ceremony for the state deputy police chief at the Terengganu contingent police headquarters (IPK) today.
At the ceremony, the Terengganu Criminal Investigation Department chief, ACP Arsad Kamaruddin, was appointed as acting state deputy police chief, replacing Datuk Wan Rukman Wan Hassan, who went on compulsory retirement.
Mohd Khairi said police are in the process of preparing the investigation papers related to the case, which are expected to be completed within a week.
'Our investigation is focused on the incident itself, to determine whether any criminal elements contributed to it. Other aspects, such as boat or licence violations, fall under the jurisdiction of the Marine Department,' he said.
In the 10.30 pm incident on Saturday, S. Arumugam, 40, his three-year-old daughter A. Sarrvihka, and a 10-year-old relative, V. Vennpani, tragically lost their lives. Two others were injured, while 10 passengers survived the tragedy.
All the boat passengers, aged between three and 40, were returning from Pulau Perhentian Kecil to Pulau Perhentian Besar after dinner, when their boat was suddenly struck by large waves, causing it to capsize.
Besut police chief Supt Azamuddin Ahmad@Abu confirmed that the boat skipper tested positive for drugs and has five prior records related to drug offences.
Azamuddin, when contacted by Bernama today, said the 22-year-old suspect, currently under remand to facilitate investigations under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, is expected to be charged in court tomorrow.

FORMER Sarawak State Police Chief Datuk Dr Yusoff Nook has called for a sharper distinction between drug crimes and the legitimate vape industry following reports that investigated the widespread online sales of synthetic drug-laced vape products. It has been found that illicit vape liquids laced with dangerous substances like methamphetamine, syabu and ketamine were being sold openly on social media and e-commerce platforms outside regulatory reach and entirely separate from licensed retailers. These products are disguised as flavoured vape – often in colourful packaging that appeals to younger consumers – and are traded via anonymous sellers through private messaging and courier services. 'These are not rogue retailers or irresponsible shop owners. These are organised drug traffickers – sophisticated, transnational and criminal in nature,' revealed Yusoff who was head of the Special Branch's economic intelligence division. 'They are merely using vape as a new delivery mechanism. But the issue is not with vape – the issue is drugs. At its core, this remains a drug crime and it must be treated as such.' According to Yusoff, the recent calls for state-level vape bans are misdirected as they do not address the real source of harm. 'These products are not sold by licensed players but are sold online by criminals operating in the shadows,' insisted the former commercial crime head. 'A state ban on vape shops won't stop this. If anything, it punishes the visible and regulated segment of the market while doing nothing to touch the underground networks.' Distinguishing narcotics Yusoff further observed that the legitimate vape industry is now governed under the Control of Smoking Products for Public Health Act 2024 (Act 852) which imposes strict requirements including product registration, price approvals and retail licensing. 'Licensed players are complying. They are subject to inspections and oversight,' he justified. 'The ones flooding our streets and social media aren't part of that system. They're traffickers. Let's stop conflating legal vaping with narcotics. This is a criminal abuse of a product, not a failure of regulation or industry.' Towards this end, Yusoff urged the relevant authorities to act with precision by using tools like the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, Anti-Money Laundering Act (AMLA) 2001, stronger criminal enforcement, targeted raids and cross-border intelligence sharing to combat these syndicates. 'This is a matter of national security. We should be using every legal weapon available to counter drug networks – not redirecting blame onto products that criminals happen to exploit,' asserted Yusoff who holds a PhD in Economic Crime from Stirling University. 'If we spend time penalising the legal market, we risk giving the illegal market room to grow. The vape industry is not the threat but drug syndicates are. Four charged with possessing over 13kg of drugs in JB

JOHOR BARU: Two Malaysian men and two Vietnamese women have been charged at the Magistrate's Court here with distributing and possessing more than 13kg of drugs. Chin Hin Leong, 46, and Tay Wei Bin, 36, and Vietnamese Pham Thi Quy, 26, and Nong Thi Nhinh, 29, were jointly charged with the distribution of 12,090g of methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA) powder at an apartment on Jalan Tanjung Puteri 1 here at around noon on June 19. The four were also accused of distributing 375g of MDMA pills at the same time and place. Both charges were framed under Section 39B(1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and are punishable under Section 39B(2) of the same Act, which carries a death sentence or lifetime imprisonment and up to 15 strokes of the cane, upon conviction. All four said they understood the charges, which were read to them in Mandarin before Magistrate A. Shaarmini on Thursday (July 3). However, no plea was recorded from all the accused as the case falls under the jurisdiction of the High Court. Shaarmini said no bail was offered due to the non-bailable nature of offence and fixed Sept 3 for next mention and submission of chemical reports. Couple nabbed in Penampang, KK during drug raid
KOTA KINABALU: A husband and wife have been arrested in possession of suspected syabu (methamphetamine) during a drug raid at Kampung Nosoob in Penampang on Monday afternoon (June 30). The local couple, aged 54 and 55, were detained by the Narcotics Crime Investigation Division of the Penampang district police headquarters around 4.30pm. Penampang district police chief, Supt Sammy Newton, said a search led to the discovery of a clear plastic packet containing crystal-like substances believed to be methamphetamine, weighing approximately 50.5g. Police also seized two vehicles and RM1,800 in cash. He said the street value of the seized drugs is estimated at RM2,500. 'Initial urine tests confirmed that both suspects tested positive for methamphetamine and amphetamine,' Newton said in a statement on Wednesday (July 2). The case is investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries a mandatory death sentence or life imprisonment with at least 12 strokes of the cane if not sentenced to death. The couple is also being investigated under Section 15(1)(a) of the same act for drug use and is currently under remand. Newton urged the public to report any information related to drug abuse or criminal activities to the nearest police station.
