Penang cops nab four with RM3.72mil worth of ganja
GEORGE TOWN: Four men were caught with 112.1kg of ganja worth about RM3.72mil on the mainland. Penang deputy police chief Datuk Mohd Alwi Zainal Abidin said the men, three locals and one Vietnamese, were arrested between 10am on Tuesday (July 22) and 3am on Wednesday (July 23) on the mainland. "The men, aged between 31 and 39 years old, were arrested in Seberang Perai for being involved in ganja distribution activities. "During a raid at a hotel in Bukit Mertajam, we first arrested two of the local men in a hotel room and another local man believed to be the transporter in the hotel lobby. "During this raid, we found a canvas bag filled with nine transparent bags containing dried leaves believed to be ganja weighing around 9.23kg. "We then found five more transparent packages with the same substance weighing 4.23kg," he said during a press conference held at the Penang contingent police headquarters in George Town, Penang on Thursday (July 24). He said they then obtained information from the suspects that led to the arrest of a Vietnam national in the Seberang Jaya area. "He then led us to a house which has been used as a storage place for drugs. "Upon inspecting the premises, we seized two luggage bags containing 26 transparent packages with the same substance (ganja) weighing around 27kg. "We then found another two black luggage bags containing 30 more transparent packages of the same substance weighing 31.2kg. "There were another 55 transparent packages of ganja in two colourful zipped up bags weighing 40.4kg," he said. He said based on their investigations, the suspects have been actively involved in the syndicate from March this year. "The drugs we found could be used by up to 230,000 addicts. We believe it is for local market consumption," he said. He said three of the suspects tested positive for drugs and had prior drug-related offences. "All four men have been remanded for seven days from Wednesday (July 23) to July 29 for further investigations. "During the raid, we also seized three vehicles and cash amounting to RM199,300," he said. He said the case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

Melaka couple on drugs arrested after 13km high-speed chase
MELAKA: A couple, believed to be under the influence of drugs, made a desperate attempt to escape the police by speeding 13km from Tengkera, even ramming into a Motorcycle Patrol Unit (URB) officer before being apprehended in Taman Bukit Rambai yesterday evening. The incident, which occurred around 6pm, began when the suspects who were in a car, refused to stop when approached by URB officers from the Tengkera police station at Pangsapuri Taman Anika. Melaka Tengah district police chief Assistant Commissioner Christopher Patit said the officers gave chase as the car sped along Jalan Tun Tuah, continued to Jalan Tun Perak, and eventually entered Lebuh AMJ. The URB team then requested backup from a Mobile Patrol Vehicle (MPV) unit to help intercept the fleeing vehicle, which continued at high speed until Jalan Teruna 1, Taman Bukit Rambai. Along the way, it also rammed into a civilian vehicle in Tengkera. The suspect was driving recklessly, including crashing into a civilian vehicle near Rumah Awam Datin Fatimah in Tengkera, running red lights, and endangering other road users, he said. Upon reaching Jalan Teruna 1, Bukit Rambai, the suspect reversed the car and rammed into a URB officers motorcycle, causing minor injuries. Both suspects were eventually caught with assistance from the MPV team and the Tengkera Task Force. Upon inspection, officers found a bag containing two transparent packets of a substance believed to be heroin, weighing a total of 15.06g, believed to be for personal use. Christopher added that the suspects, aged 26 and 28, were taken to the Tengkera police station for further action. A urine test showed both tested positive for methamphetamine. Police also seized a weighing scale, a set of keys, and the car. The case is being investigated under Sections 186 and 332 of the Penal Code, as well as Sections 39B and 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952. Meanwhile, a 1-minute 15-second video of the MPV chase involving the suspects car has gone viral on social media, drawing various reactions from netizens.

Kedah customs seize 34kg of ganja, arrest two brothers at Bukit Kayu Hitam
ALOR STAR: The Kedah Customs Department has seized over 34kg of ganja worth nearly RM190,000 in two separate operations at the Bukit Kayu Hitam Immigration, Customs, Quarantine and Security (ICQS) Complex. In the first case, a 48-year-old lorry driver was arrested on June 26 after Customs officers stopped his lorry for inspection at Block E, Import-Export branch of the complex at around 10.10pm. Kedah Customs director Wan Marini Wan Hamzah said a preliminary search found two suspicious boxes hidden behind the driver's seat. "Further checks found transparent plastic packages suspected to contain 18,750g of compressed ganja, with an estimated value of RM57,187," she said in a statement today. She said investigators believe the suspect attempted to smuggle the drugs under the guise of transporting vegetables late at night, assuming Customs officers would not inspect the cargo. Two days later, two brothers, aged 21 and 24, were arrested at the ICQS passenger checkpoint after arriving from a neighbouring country on an express bus. "Officers detected anomalies during a baggage scan. A thorough inspection of their luggage found 15,474.40g of ganja, estimated to be worth RM131,779.43," she said. This included 875.30g of cannabis flower buds in 15 small black plastic-wrapped packages, and another 14,599.10g of ganja in 87 compact packages of various sizes. Wan Marini said the duo attempted to smuggle the drugs into Malaysia using public transport to avoid detection. Both cases are being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 which carries the death penalty or life imprisonment and whipping of not less than 12 strokes upon conviction.

Suspected drug traffickers nabbed in Melaka after 13km chase
MELAKA: A couple believed to be involved in drug trafficking has been arrested after leading police on a 13km chase that ended with a policeman injured. Melaka Tengah OCPD Asst Comm Christopher Patit said the incident occurred at around 6pm on Tuesday (July 22) when a motorcycle patrol unit tried to stop a car at Taman Anika Apartments in Lorong Pandan here. 'The suspects sped off instead of complying, and my men gave chase,' he said on Wednesday (July 23). He said the car was driven by a 26-year-old man, with his 28-year-old girlfriend in the front passenger seat. "The man drove recklessly, ignoring red lights and endangering other road users. "The chase ended at Taman Bukit Rambai, where the suspects suddenly reversed their vehicle and rammed a police motorcycle, causing minor injury to a lans koperal,' he said. ACP Christopher said his men then detained the suspects with the help of five mobile patrol vehicle units. 'A search of the car uncovered two transparent packets believed to contain heroin, along with a weighing scale,' he added. The suspects were taken to the Tengkera police station for further investigation and a remand order was obtained this morning, he said. The case is being investigated under Sections 186 and 332 of the Penal Code for obstructing and causing hurt to a public servant, and under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 for trafficking. Penang police arrest four men with RM53,500 drugs in Seberang Jaya, Gurun
BUKIT MERTAJAM: Penang police have dismantled a drug distribution syndicate following the arrest of four men and the seizure of narcotics worth RM53,500 in raids across Seberang Jaya and Gurun, Kedah. Acting state police chief Datuk Mohd Alwi Zainal Abidin said the operation, conducted by the Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department (NCID), took place between 4 pm on Sunday and 5 am yesterday. The suspects, aged between 32 and 61, were detained in separate locations. In the first raid, three men were apprehended in a parking lot in Seberang Jaya. A search of their vehicle uncovered two canvas bags containing 10 packets of compressed ganja leaves weighing 9,920 grams. A follow-up operation in Gurun led to the arrest of another suspect. Police found a sack with seven packets of suspected ganja (6,995 grams), four packets of heroin (30.34 grams), and three packets of methamphetamine (3.45 grams). Mohd Alwi stated that the syndicate sourced its supply from regional drug networks, repackaging and distributing the narcotics in Penang since May. The seized drugs could potentially supply 35,000 addicts. All suspects have been remanded for seven days under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952. - Bernama
