Enterprises embrace the agentic AI shift, but adoption remains cautious amid risk, talent, and ROI concerns

Nasscom today released its latest research report, 'Enterprise Experiments with AI Agents – 2025 Global Trends,' offering a first-of-its-kind comprehensive lens into how global enterprises are experimenting with and investing in AI agents. At a time when AI is shifting from passive analytics to active agents of execution, the report captures the foundational shifts underway within the enterprise ecosystem. The study draws on responses from over 100 global enterprises across 8 -9 major regions and over 10 industries, offering a landscape view into how businesses are transitioning from early stage Generative AI applications toward more goal-oriented, human-plus-AI agentic systems.
Enterprises are strengthening their tech core from AI spend and talent, GenAI capabilities, data foundations, and process flexibility to build and deploy AI agents. The study underscores that 88% of enterprises now have dedicated AI budgets, with two-thirds of them allocating over 15% of their tech budgets specifically toward AI initiatives. This shift is reflected in the emergence of specialized AI teams, greater focus on GenAI platforms and tooling, and infrastructure readiness. However, while awareness of GenAI is high, actual use of advanced models remains limited. Only about half of surveyed enterprises are fine-tuning large language models (LLMs) or foundation models for their own applications.
Crucially, the move toward Agentic AI is gaining traction. Nearly 62% of global enterprises are currently experimenting with such AI agents, ranging from proof-of-concepts to scaled pilots. However, the nature of these experiments is still largely internal, focused on task-level automation with human oversight, with 76% of enterprises positioning their own IT operations as 'client zero.' External-facing use cases, such as customer service, are still limited, with only 31% of companies indicating active usage in those areas. Yet, a significant 88% of enterprises indicate intent to dedicate specific AI budgets toward agentic systems in 2025, suggesting strong optimism but cautious execution.
Sangeeta Gupta, Senior Vice President and Chief Strategy Officer at Nasscom, said,
'We are at the tipping point of the AI maturity curve where enterprises are no longer just experimenting with AI, but actively reimagining their architecture, workflows, and teams to build agentic systems. AI agents represent the next evolution of enterprise AI one that requires philosophical shifts in how we view work, intelligence, and autonomy. But to scale responsibly, trust, data readiness, and human oversight will be non-negotiable.'
Despite growing confidence, the study reveals that deployment remains largely incremental. A significant 77% of enterprises are adopting
agentic AI systems
with a 'human-in-the-loop' design, reflecting an awareness of the need for constant oversight, adaptability, and contextual judgment. While 46% report experimenting with autonomous agents. IT operations, customer service, and internal HR and finance functions are leading experimentation grounds. Manufacturing enterprises are moving faster than services in adoption, with AI-powered robotics, quality control, and process agents showing strong traction.
The business case for Agentic AI appears strongest in real-time decision-making and operational agility. More than half the enterprises see such systems as critical enablers for translating information into intelligence and rapidly responding to shifting market dynamics. Only 39% believe that agentic systems will meaningfully free up human bandwidth for higher-order work, suggesting that, at present, these systems may augment rather than replace existing workflows.
Data remains the cornerstone of AI efficacy. With 68% of companies focusing on strengthening data governance and management, and 62% working on integrating structured and unstructured data flows, enterprises are laying the groundwork for scalable, reliable agentic solutions.
However, the path forward is marked by both technical and structural headwinds. Data privacy, risks of self-learning systems, and the absence of cohesive regulatory frameworks continue to be cited as top adoption barriers. While most enterprises still rely on adapted legacy risk frameworks, only 43% enterprises have initiated focused AI risk protocols, including observability tools and hardware-level audits. Interestingly, only 44% of companies expressed concern about the cultural and mindset shifts required to build effective human + AI systems or the perceived limitations in ROI from such deployments. While just 27% of global enterprises identified the lack of AI talent as a major constraint.
However, success will not be defined by autonomy alone. Enterprises need to prioritize human-AI collaboration, ensure process adaptability, and embed trust at the core of their systems to lead in the age of intelligent agents.

While growth was broad-based across verticals, we are enthused by the strong momentum in our Financial Services practice that grew 21.3% sequentially and 48.4% YoY. We are witnessing increased traction in our GenAI practice and anticipate that it will double, contributing 12-14% of our overall revenue by the end of FY26. As we look ahead, we will continue to focus on deepening relationships with our key clients, strengthening the Databricks partnership, and building cutting-edge solutions and capabilities powered by GenAI and Agentic AI. Rajan Venkatesan, chief financial officer, LatentView, stated: The reported margin for the quarter factors in the full impact of wage hikes across the group. Small towns, big compute: Data centre investors look beyond India's metros

Agencies The high energy demands of AI chips are pushing data centre investors to look beyond India's metro hubs and tap into the country's hinterland. Sify Technologies, CtrlS Datacenters, ESDS Software Solutions, RackBank and others are shifting focus from traditional locations such as Mumbai, Chennai and Noida. Instead, cities like Nagpur, Raipur, Chandigarh, Jaipur, Ahmedabad, Lucknow and Kochi are emerging as attractive alternatives offering better returns. State governments are actively incentivizing this shift with land subsidies, single-window clearances and relaxed power tariffs. The Chhattisgarh government, for instance, is offering capital subsidies ranging from `60 crore to `300 crore, along with duty exemptions and rental support. The state is also subsidising talent costs with 20% salary reimbursements—up to `50,000 a month per employee—for five years, according to the State's policy document. Rajasthan chief minister Bhajanlal Sharma unveiled a data centre policy in April, aiming to attract `20,000 crore in investment over the next five years. Similarly, Gujarat is offering capital incentives of `50–200 crore, along with tax waivers. Revival of the edgeExecutives said the AI boom could well mean a revival of edge data centres—smaller and closer to users—which haven't gathered much steam over the last decade. That's changing as cities like Mumbai and Chennai have become overpriced data centre hotspots because of their proximity to submarine cables landing on their shores. 'GenAI is the new engine that will fire investments to edge data centres,' said Rajiv Ranjan, associate director, cloud and AI, at research firm IDC India. 'We expect more AI inferencing workloads to get deployed at edge locations, closer to customers in tier 2 cities.' He also cited an emerging trend of modular or portable data centres, which are suited for small deployments and can be moved. According to IDC, investments in public cloud models at edge locations in the Asia-Pacific region (excluding Japan) are expected to grow from $15 billion in 2024 at a CAGR of 17% through 2028—a trend expected to be mirrored in India.'We believe the inflection point for edge DCs is now,' said Vipul Kumar, VP, edge and network, CtrlS Datacenters. 'A lot of AI workloads—especially inferencing—don't always need to sit in a central cloud or metro hub. They can (and should) run closer to the edge, particularly for use cases in sectors like manufacturing, healthcare, surveillance, agriculture, or autonomous systems in tier 2 and 3 cities of India.'CtrlS has deployed edge capacities in Patna, Lucknow and Bhubaneswar. The company is investing `500 crore in Bhopal, its first facility in central India. It's aiming for expansion in GIFT City (Ahmedabad), Guwahati, Kochi and Nagpur, it Technologies said that while Mumbai, Chennai and Noida continue to be its growth epicentres, its edge model is also picking up pace. Raju Vegesna, Sify chairman and managing director, said the company has a $5 billion expansion plan that involves adding sites in tier 2 locations.'We are going to invest in data centres not only in the six-seven metros but in the next 10-20 tier 2, tier 3 cities like Lucknow, Chandigarh, Nagpur with small capacities of around 10 megawatts to create these AI factories,' he told ET in Software Solution is setting up a green data centre in Sahibabad in Uttar Pradesh designed for 600 high-density racks, 30 MW scalable capacity and GPU-ready direct liquid cooling, said chairman and managing director Piyush Somani. AI infrastructure startup RackBank, which launched AI cloud business unit NeevCloud in 2023, is investing nearly `700 crore in cities such as Indore, Raipur and Assam. Clean energy momentum is enabling such locations to become attractive for data centres. For instance, CtrlS said it has commissioned a captive solar power facility in Nagpur. Such strategies are proving useful in power-sensitive and water-scarce regions. To be sure, hurdles persist. Companies must invest in dual grid systems for power redundancy. Telecom connectivity and fibre may be sketchy in remote regions. Finding skilled professionals such as certified data centre operators and engineers continues to be a challenge in smaller towns. In kitchens and classrooms, through trekking trails and theatre groups, across WhatsApp and wellness apps, there is a quiet revolution unfolding in India. Our active seniors are no longer 'retiring'; they are just getting started. Call them the second-innings generation. These are Indians in their mid-to-late 50s to 70s who are pushing the boundaries of what ageing looks and feels like, seeking health, learning, purpose, and community in ways that previous generations never imagined. Demographic inflection point India is ageing fast and actively. According to the UNFPA India Ageing Report, 2023, the population aged 60-plus is projected to reach 319 million by 2050, accounting for 20% of the total population. Life expectancy has risen sharply from 63 in 2000 to over 70.9 in 2024, and it continues to climb. This demographic shift represents more than statistical progression; it signals a fundamental recalibration of India's age structure. Unlike the gradual ageing experienced by developed economies over several decades, India faces compressed demographic transition, a phenomenon that demands immediate policy attention and systemic adaptation. What is even more telling is the shift in lifestyle patterns. A 2022 NASSCOM study reported a 50% increase in digital adoption among Indian seniors over five years, with more older adults using smartphones for video calls, online learning, banking, fitness tracking, and social engagement. This technological embrace contradicts persistent stereotypes about seniors' relationship with technology and innovation. Simultaneously, data from Agewell Foundation shows that more than 30% of Indians aged 60 to 69 remain economically active. Many are choosing to take on new professions, consult, mentor, or launch ventures post-retirement. This cohort represents the first generation of Indians to benefit significantly from economic liberalisation, accumulating substantial wealth and developing sophisticated consumption preferences. The economic imperative These numbers point to something bigger than a trend. It's a movement that carries profound economic implications for India's growth trajectory. Consider the purchasing power concentration. It's believed that the top decile of Indians — predominantly seniors — controls over 70% of the nation's wealth. This demographic possesses both the financial means and the time to engage in discretionary spending, yet remains largely underserved by contemporary market offerings. The economic potential extends well beyond consumption. The concept of the 'longevity economy', encompassing all economic activity generated by the needs and aspirations of people over 50, is fast emerging as one of the most significant growth opportunities for India. This represents an ageing challenge and an unprecedented market opportunity that requires strategic cultivation. Not just new-age start-ups, but many legacy business houses have begun tapping into this evolving market. Moreover, the knowledge economy benefits significantly from senior participation. Their institutional memory, professional networks, and accumulated expertise represent intangible assets that when properly harnessed, can drive innovation and mentorship across sectors. Countries such as Japan and Singapore have already begun institutionalising such knowledge transfer mechanisms. There have been attempts in India as well, but they remain few and far in-between. Winding down to reimagining life This is not about 'keeping busy'. It's about reclaiming agency, identity, and joy. Roshini Devi Sangwan stepped into a gym at 65. And not to prove a point to anyone else, but to take back control over her body and her life. What began as a simple walk became a deeper journey into strength, self-discipline, and self-worth. Too often, people beyond a certain age are expected to step aside and to fade quietly into the background. But today, Roshini Devi is stronger than many half her age. And the real power of her story lies not just in her physical transformation, but in what it represents: a shift from invisibility to intentional living. Her experience mirrors a broader societal transformation. The traditional Indian joint family structure, once a reliable support system for ageing parents, has evolved significantly. With 70% of urban Indian families now nuclear and approximately 25 lakh Indians emigrating annually, seniors increasingly live independently. Rather than viewing this as social fragmentation, we must recognise it as an opportunity for autonomous ageing, provided adequate support systems exist. Infrastructure gap The challenge is not in seniors' willingness to engage but in society's readiness to accommodate their aspirations. Current urban planning, healthcare delivery, and technology design remain largely age-blind, creating barriers rather than enabling participation. Healthcare infrastructure illustrates this disconnect acutely. While 75% of elderly Indians suffer from one or more chronic diseases, the healthcare system remains oriented toward remedial care rather than preventive wellness. The absence of geriatric specialists (India has fewer than 1,000 certified geriatricians for its ageing population) reflects deeper systemic inadequacies. Digital inclusion presents another frontier. While smartphone adoption among seniors has increased dramatically, the design philosophy of most applications assumes younger users. On mobile apps, even if they are purpose-built for active seniors, font sizes, navigation complexity, and security features often exclude rather than include. This is despite the growing purchasing power and engagement willingness of these active seniors. Policy implications Why we must pay attention extends beyond individual wellbeing to national competitiveness. The second innings generation is full of energy and intent but most institutions, brands, and narratives still treat them through the lens of decline: retirement, risk, and retreat. In many institutional and social conversations, this generation is still viewed through a lens of limitation rather than potential. What they actually need is access and understanding of their specific needs of curated products, social connection, opportunities to discover new skills, content that reflects their ambitions, and communities that validate their experiences. This demographic transition demands comprehensive policy recalibration. The National Policy on Senior Citizens requires updating to reflect contemporary realities. Current social protection schemes, designed for a different demographic context, need restructuring to accommodate longer, more active lifespans. Labour policy presents particular challenges. The concept of fixed retirement ages, inherited from an era of shorter lifespans and different economic structures, may need fundamental revision. Flexible work arrangements, phased retirement options, and age-neutral hiring practices could unlock significant human capital while addressing pension sustainability concerns. Urban planning must incorporate age-friendly design principles. A short wishlist includes accessible public transport, pedestrian infrastructure, healthcare proximity, and social spaces that encourage intergenerational interaction. Cities such as Pune and Chennai have begun pilot programmes, but systematic adoption remains limited. International perspectives Global experiences offer valuable insights. South Korea's 'Active Ageing' policies have successfully increased senior workforce participation while improving health outcomes. Singapore's 'Community Health Assist Scheme' demonstrates how technology can enhance healthcare delivery for ageing populations. These models, adapted to Indian contexts, could accelerate our preparedness. However, India's unique demographic advantage of a large ageing population coinciding with substantial wealth concentration presents opportunities that other economies have not experienced. The challenge lies in converting demographic change from a responsibility into a dividend. Designing for the new life stage Supporting this demographic is not a CSR obligation or a public health checkbox. It's a cultural and economic opportunity. Because what is at stake is not just their well-being, it's our collective future. If India is to be an inclusive, forward-looking society, it must create ecosystems that allow older adults to thrive, not just survive. Realising this potential will require more than policy tweaks; it calls for a mindset shift. We need to see active seniors not as passive beneficiaries, but as engaged contributors to our social, cultural, and economic life. This means designing systems and spaces that reflect their evolving aspirations, and narratives that affirm their agency. Additionally, we need age-tech innovation that prioritises specific products tailored for specific needs, usability over complexity, health intervention models that emphasise prevention over treatment, financial products designed for longer lifespans, and social infrastructure that combats isolation while promoting independence. The path forward Let us rethink ageing as a time of growth, not decline. Let us recognise that the second-innings generation is not slowing down — they are simply choosing new directions. This transformation requires coordinated action across the government, private sector, and civil society. Policy frameworks must evolve, market offerings must adapt, and social attitudes must shift. The demographic dividend that drove India's growth over recent decades is transitioning into a wisdom dividend, provided we prepare adequately. This is not a demographic trend. It's a cultural reset. And it's time we caught up. The silent revolution of India's active seniors represents both challenge and opportunity. How we respond will determine whether ageing becomes a source of national strength or strain. The choice, like the revolution itself, is already under way.
