Chip Gaines responds to backlash after featuring same-sex couple on new show

HGTV stars Chip and Joanna Gaines' new Magnolia Network recently featured a same-sex couple on their series 'Back to the Frontier.' The show, which also streams on HBO Max, features families as they 'leave the 21st century behind to live as 1800s pioneers.' IMDb describes the series as a 'bold social experiment that will test their strength, stamina, and sense of humor.' One of the families featured on the show is the Hanna-Riggs family, which features dads Jason Hanna and Joe Riggs and their 10-year-old twin sons. After the show's premiere on July 10, son of evangelical pastor Billy Graham, Franklin Graham, took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to share his thoughts on the show. 'I hope this isn't true, but I read today that Chip and Joanna Gaines are featuring a gay couple in their new series. If it is true, it is very disappointing,' his tweet read. 'While we are to love people, we should love them enough to tell them the truth of God's Word. His Word is absolute truth. God loves us, and His design for marriage is between one man and one woman. Promoting something that God defines as sin is in itself sin.' Chip Gaines seemingly responded to the backlash with a post of his own, defending the Hanna-Riggs family and others like them. 'Talk, ask (questions), listen.. maybe even learn,' Chip Gaines wrote. 'Too much to ask of modern American Christian culture. Judge 1st, understand later/never. It's a sad Sunday when 'non believers' have never been confronted with hate or vitriol until they are introduced to a modern American Christian.' In response to Chip Gaines' tweet, conservative social commentator Joel Berry wrote, 'You'll see no hate from me. I'm just sad. I can't let my kids watch your show now, since I'm trying to protect their eyes and hearts from the lies of the world—lies you're now participating in.' 'Also, filter out some of the online vitriol and consider taking to heart some of the substantive concerns and heartbreak from the Christians who make up your fanbase,' Berry continued. 'We should love the sinner—that doesn't mean we celebrate and promote the sin and participate in the multibillion dollar industry dedicated to destroying the family.' 'Don't be sad Joel,' Chip Gaines wrote in response. 'Plenty of other stuff out there. I'm sure everyone will be fine. BUT I sincerely appreciate the advice about taking some of the thoughtful, heartfelt, encouraging constructive criticism to heart.. and I certainly will.' Chip and Joanna Gaines launched Magnolia Network in 2022. Following the backlash, Hanna told Queerty that he is 'super honored that when they were choosing three modern-day families, they did choose a same-sex couple as a modern-day family, because we are. We are your neighbors and your co-workers.'

'The Legend of Zelda' movie has its cast — here's who's playing Zelda and Link in the live-action adaptation

The quest can begin: The long-awaited live-action "Legend of Zelda" movie has finally found its Link and Zelda. Today (July 16), Nintendo's Shigeru Miyamoto popped onto Nintendo's official X account to make an announcement about casting for the live-action movie version of the popular video game. "I am pleased to announce that for the live-action film of 'The Legend of Zelda', Zelda will be played by Bo Bragason-san, and Link by Benjamin Evan Ainsworth-san," he wrote in a translated post. This is Miyamoto. I am pleased to announce that for the live-action film of The Legend of Zelda, Zelda will be played by Bo Bragason-san, and Link by Benjamin Evan Ainsworth-san. I am very much looking forward to seeing both of them on the big screen. (1/2) 16, 2025 A follow-up post announced that the movie is scheduled to release on May 7, 2027. Miyamoto is a Nintendo legend, having created the original Legend of Zelda for the NES. He wrote that he was "very much looking forward" to seeing the duo of Bragan and Ainsworth in the iconic lead roles of the series. Nintendo's move into live-action comes on the heels of its massive success with the animated "The Super Mario Bros. Movie," which earned over $1.3 billion at the global box office in 2023. The company is likely hoping that the "Legend of Zelda" movie will join that and other recent hits like HBO's "The Last of Us," Prime Video's "Fallout" and the "Sonic the Hedgehog" movies in proving there's a real appetite for faithful, big-budget takes on gaming's most iconic franchises. Bragason, 21, is mostly known for the Netflix fantasy series "Renegade Nell" and is in the upcoming show, "King and Conqueror," which stars Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (Jamie Lannister in "Game of Thrones"). Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. The younger Ainsworth, 16, has had several notable roles. You might recognize his voice as Pinocchio from Disney's 2022 live-action movie that starred Tom Hanks as Geppetto. He also appeared in "The Haunting of Bly Manor" as Miles Wingrave and in the recent "Everything is Going to be Alright" with Bryan Cranston and Allison Janney. Miyamoto's post includes a photo that appears to show Bragason in Zelda's classic light blue dress, and Ainsworth in a green-ish cloak, though it's not quite as distinct as the more forest green of Link's classic outfit. The live-action Zelda movie was announced in 2023 and is being produced by Miyamoto and former Marvel Studios CEO Avi Arad. It's being directed by Wes Ball ("Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes," "Maze Runner") and written by Derek Connolly ("Kong: Skull Island," "Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom"). As production moves forward, you can count on Tom's Guide to keep you updated with all the latest news, sneak peeks, and reveals about the "Legend of Zelda" movie.
