HC grants bail to two in drug case
The prosecution's case was that the accused were found in possession of 1.618 kg of ganja at their residence in Poonithura village on March 6 this year. They were charged with offences under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985.
The court observed that the narcotic drug seized from the accused was not of commercial quantity. Therefore, the rigour under Section 37 of the NDPS Act is not applicable to the case. In such circumstances, the petitioners can be released on bail after imposing stringent conditions.

40 people freed from bonded labour in Prakasam district
Nearly 40 people, including 17 from Odisha and 23 from Chhattisgarh, who were working as bonded labourers in two shrimp factories at Tanguturu mandal in Prakasam district, were rescued. District Collector A. Thameem Ansaria handed over relief certificates to them at her camp office in Ongole on Tuesday. She directed the officials of relevant departments to take steps to ensure that the victims receive their due amounts as per the law for their period of service, and to provide special transport facilities to send them back to their native places. The details of the victims were provided by Ongole Revenue Divisional Officer (RDO) K. Lakshmi Prasanna. According to an information received from Bastar District Collector in Chhattisgarh, the Prakasam district administration officials realised that people had been doing hard work at the factories under bonded labour. The officials tracked the victims with the help of voluntary organisations and rescued them on Monday. The RDO revealed that the victims, including minors, were forced into the bonded labour by a middleman. 'They were not provided proper accommodation, food or even money for their work. A case was registered against the two shrimp factories under the Bonded Labour System (Abolition) Act, Child Labour (Prohibition) Act and Minimum Wages Acts, and action will be taken,' she said. She added that a special bus has been arranged for the victims to go back to their their native places, along with the officials from Bastar district. Prakasam Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) Project Director S. Suvarna, Assistant Commissioner of Labour (Kandukuru) M. Koteswara Rao, and Assistant Labour Officer Mary Sujatha participated in the programme.

38 black magic, sorcery cases registered in Kerala in past five years, HC told
A total of 38 cases have been registered in Kerala in the past five years regarding black magic and sorcery, the State government has informed the Kerala High Court. The court had earlier asked the State to clarify its stance after the Kerala Yukthivadi Sangham filed a public interest litigation (PIL) seeking a law similar to those enacted in Maharashtra and Karnataka to prohibit harmful rituals conducted in the name of supernatural powers. The plea was filed in 2022 in the wake of three persons, including a couple, allegedly sacrificing two women in Pathanamthitta district. The Yuktivadi Sangham, in its plea, stated that the Kerala Law Reforms Commission, headed by K.T. Thomas, had submitted a report to the government in 2019, with legislative recommendations, based on the new social conditions. The Kerala Prevention and Eradication of Inhuman Evil Practices, Sorcery and Black Magic Bill 2019 was one of the recommended statutes. But so far, the State had not attempted to implement it, the organisation claimed. In an affidavit in June, the government said a draft Bill titled 'The Kerala Prevention and Eradication of Inhuman Evil Practices, Sorcery and Black Magic Bill, 2022' had been prepared based on recommendations from the Law Reforms Commission. After deliberations, the Council of Ministers had decided on July 5, 2023 not to go ahead with the legislation. Subsequently, the court told the State to clearly explain how it planned to prevent the practice of black magic and sorcery, even in the absence of a law. A Division Bench of Chief Justice Nitin Jamdar and Justice Basant Balaji posted the PIL for hearing on August 19.

‘Malegaon Files': Film On 2008 Malegaon Blast Case Announced, To Be Directed By Rajiv S Ruia
Mumbai: A film based on the 2008 Malegaon bomb blast case has been announced and has been titled 'Malegaon Files'. 'My Friend Ganesha' fame director Rajiv S Ruia will be directing the film, which is currently in the pre-production stage. The cast and crew of the movie have not been revealed yet by the makers. The film will be produced by Sahil Seth under the banner of Cinedust 18 Films Pvt. Ltd. According to a press note shared by the makers, the film aims to present a gripping and sensitive portrayal of the 2008 Malegaon bomb blasts, which shook the nation and led to a long, complicated legal battle. "This is not just a story about a blast -- it's about what followed. The human stories, the political shadow, the search for truth, and the emotional and legal turmoil faced by the accused and the victims' families. 'Malegaon Files' is our attempt to bring that reality to the screen," director Rajiv S Ruia, said about the film in the press note. Ruia told ANI that the film is currently in the pre-production stage and will be shot on real locations. "Our writer team is in talks. It is a very sensitive subject. Every detail behind it needs to be brought out. Research is going on...99 per cent we will shoot on real locations. We will do recce soon," he said. According to the press note, the makers stated that the script is being developed with inputs from investigative reports, court documents, and real testimonies to ensure that the narrative remains grounded and respectful. The film is slated to go on floors by late 2025, with more details about the cast and shooting schedule expected to be revealed soon. The Malegaon blast tragedy took place on September 29, 2008 in which six people were killed and 95 others injured when an explosive device strapped to a motorcycle detonated near a mosque in Malegaon City's Bhikku Chowk. Originally, 11 people were accused in the case; however, the court ultimately framed charges against 7, including former MP Sadhvi Pragya. The Mumbai NIA court on July 31 acquitted all seven accused of being involved in the 2008 blasts in Malegaon, with the court saying the prosecution failed to establish the case beyond a reasonable doubt. The 2008 Malegaon blast case was transferred to the NIA in 2011 from the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS). After a 17-year-long wait and examination of hundreds of witnesses, the NIA special court acquitted all seven people accused under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, Arms Act and all other charges.
