Isolated strong to severe thunderstorms remain possible across parts of Maryland this evening, primarily west of the I-95 corridor. While not everyone will see storms, those that do develop may produce damaging wind gusts and heavy downpours.
Temperatures, after climbing to around 90 degrees this afternoon, will gradually fall into the 70s overnight. Any lingering storm activity is expected to diminish after sunset.
Tuesday Alert Day for Severe Weather
A more widespread and potentially more impactful round of severe weather is expected Tuesday. The WJZ First Alert Weather Team has issued an Alert Day due to the increased threat for damaging winds and localized flooding.
Storms are forecast to develop by mid-afternoon and will progress eastward through the evening hours, affecting the Baltimore metro area during the evening commute and reaching the Eastern Shore before tapering off after sunset.
High temperatures Tuesday will once again reach near 90 degrees, with heat index values approaching 100 prior to the arrival of storms. In addition to damaging winds, "training" thunderstorms — storms repeatedly moving over the same areas — could result in isolated flooding.
Improving Conditions for July 4th Week
The unsettled pattern will begin to ease Wednesday, though a lingering chance for showers or a thunderstorm remains across southern Maryland and the lower Eastern Shore. Elsewhere, dry conditions are expected with highs in the upper 80s and slightly reduced humidity.
The forecast improves further for Thursday and Independence Day. Nights will feel more comfortable, with lows dipping into the upper 60s, while afternoon highs stay in the upper 80s under mostly sunny skies.
Looking Ahead: Warm, Mostly Dry Weekend
Dry and sunny conditions will continue into the weekend, with highs near 90. Humidity will gradually build back in, and nighttime temperatures will trend milder — generally in the low to mid 70s.
The next chance for storms returns early next week as the pattern turns more unsettled again.

A big reason for that is the changing structure of the PGA Tour and the signature events. That makes this tournament key to securing a spot in the playoffs. "These benchmarks have been set. And the players know that," said 3M Open Tournament Director Mike Welch. "If they're anywhere from (number) 37 to 125, they're like, 'I gotta play these events.' And we just happen to be in a great spot in the schedule." That's the kicker. The 3M Open used to be one of the least coveted dates of the pro golf schedule, but not anymore. "We knew that this moment was coming," said Welch. "Where it's like 'Hey, the depth of the field is just gonna be there.' We're still lacking around the top, top-end talent. If you're one to 10 (ranked player), you probably don't need to be here — being after the Open Championship, obviously, that presents some challenges — but if you're not, you're usually coming. So, we knew it was here and now we're reaping the rewards." Like last season, it's been a stormy summer in Minnesota. With a few weeks to go, Superintendent Joe Rolstad hopes it'll stop raining. "We can control. We can put a little water out if we need to. All the ponds are full out here right now," he said. Tornado reported in southern Ontario on Monday afternoon
Strong thunderstorms moving through southern Ontario produced a tornado north of London on Monday afternoon. A humid and unstable airmass draped across the region fuelled a favourable setup for strong to severe thunderstorms. One of the storms acquired rotation near the community of Lucan, resulting in a short-lived tornado. DON'T MISS: Some minor damage was reported, including broken branches, downed trees, and crop damage along Highway 4 near Lucan. Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) issued a tornado warning as the storm moved through the area. Experts will survey the damage and assign the tornado a rating on the Enhanced Fujita Scale in the days ahead. Tornado season is well underway across Canada.
