Ange Postecoglou's triumph breaks streaming record as Australians tune in ‘in droves'
Stan's live audience for Tottenham's 1-0 win over Manchester United on Thursday was the highest for a Europa League match since the streaming service obtained the Uefa club competition rights in 2021.
The number of viewers also eclipsed the audience for every Stan broadcast of the Champions League – the most prestigious European football competition – apart from the 2022 decider between Real Madrid and Liverpool, when the provider still offered a 30-day free trial and saw a spike in temporary sign-ups likely from Reds fans.
Ben Kimber, director of Stan Sport, said the audience watching Spurs and Postecoglou's victory was double the previous Europa League record.
'Off the back of a momentous morning for Ange Postecoglou and Australian football as a whole, we saw Aussies tuning into the blockbuster clash between Tottenham and Man United in droves,' Kimber said.
'It underlines our commitment to premium sport and world-class football, and shows the appetite that exists for it in this country.'
The Europa League final and record-breaking audience caps off a busy period for Stan, amid increasing activity in the broader sports broadcasting sector and growing speculation around the division of football rights in Australia.
The first benefits for Kayo Sports subscribers under new owner Dazn was confirmed this week when the Fifa Club World Cup – which has an international arrangement with Dazn – was confirmed to be broadcast by Australia's leading sports streamer in June.
The arrangement is another step in the splintering of football across streaming providers. However, some relief could be imminent according to reports that Optus Sport is considering relinquishing its English Premier League rights to the content-hungry Stan.
Stan and Nine secured a deal last week to show international rugby union including the home men's 2027 and women's 2029 World Cups, a month after securing access for Wallabies, Wallaroos and Super Rugby Pacific matches until 2030.
Its other recent deals include the Sonny Bill Williams and Paul Gallen fight, and the fast-growing mixed martial arts league Professional Fighters League on top of its existing stable of rights which includes tennis, cycling and motorsport such as World Rally Championship, Indycar and Formula E.

The chief executive at Stan owner Nine, Matt Stanton, confirmed this month the network was also interested in Formula One rights when they become available next year. They are currently held by Foxtel and Kayo Sports.
This week Amazon Prime also confirmed details around more than 100 NBA and WNBA games and additional coverage starting next season available to all Prime members. Alongside its existing ICC tournament coverage of cricket, the platform will also offer NBA League Pass subscriptions for those wanting access to more matches.
ESPN became available to Australian Disney+ subscribers in March, including live NBA and MLB coverage. Disney+ has secured the European rights to the Women's Champions League, although the Australian broadcast partner is still to be confirmed.
Stan and 9Gem will broadcast the men's Champions League final between Paris Saint-Germain and Internazionale starting at 5am AEST on Sunday 1 June.

Man uses very WOKE method to crack the infamous dress code at the MCC's members area
Access to the hallowed Melbourne Cricket Club areas of the MCG comes with strict dress conditions, but some woke wording might have paved the way for blokes to ditch the collared shirts for good. Membership of the Melbourne Cricket Club gives full access to the Members' Reserve at the MCG for all AFL matches, the Boxing Day Test and other major cricket and football events. It is highly exclusive, with more than 136,000 people on the waiting list and waiting times of up to 25–30 years for full membership. For the 2025/26 season, the annual full membership subscription for metropolitan adults is $897, plus a $1,210 entrance fee paid in instalments. Along with the lengthy waiting list and eye-watering membership fees, strict dress codes are also mandated. Men aged 17 and over must wear a collared shirt at all times in the Members' Reserve, paired with neat trousers and closed‑toe footwear. Women are expected to wear a dress, skirt, or tailored trousers with a blouse or top, avoiding athletic wear, beachwear, ripped clothing and excessive logos. Athletic shorts, sneakers, sandals such as thongs or Ugg boots, and revealing clothing are strictly prohibited in all MCC member areas. But one man has discovered a loophole in the wording of the dress code on the MCC website. 'Please note: Members and their guests who identify as male and are aged 17 years and over must wear a collared shirt, even if worn under a collared sweater or jacket, at all times in the Reserve,' the website reads. 'This continues to be the major reason for male members and guests being denied admission.' That wording enabled one man to walk freely into the MCC Members area without a collared shirt simply by uttering four simple words. 'I identify as a female,' he told security blocking his path. News Corp has reported that MCC staff reluctantly had to let the member in, without a collar, but will tighten the wording to prevent it happening again. But it is not the first time gender has been used to bypass the strict dress code. In 2022, a Twitter [now X] social media user named Barnacle Bill asked the same question. 'I was born a male and now identify as a woman. Do I have to wear a collar?' they asked. While the post was likely tongue in cheek, the MCC social media team responded. 'We acknowledge that our current dress standards do not adequately accommodate for all gender identities,' the response read. 'We are reviewing our policy to establish more inclusive guidelines. You are not required to wear a collar in the Reserve.' It comes after the MCC Foundation announced in June that it had partnered with is pleased to partner with Proud 2 Play to support inclusion and participation of LGBTQIA+ people in sport. 'Sport should be inclusive, safe, and accessible, we're excited to help break down barriers and change the experience that LGBTQIA+ people have,' the club said in a statement.

Spurs captain Son says he is leaving the club
Aug 2 (Reuters) - Tottenham Hotspur captain Son Heung-min will bring his 10-year spell with the Premier League club to an end this summer, the 33-year-old South Korean said on Saturday. Son, who is under contract until 2026, led Spurs to their first trophy in 17 years with their win over Manchester United in the Europa League final in May, having joined the North London club from Bayer Leverkusen in 2015. While Son did not disclose his next destination, British media have linked him with a move to Major League Soccer club Los Angeles FC. "I have decided to leave the team this summer," Son said at a press conference ahead of Spurs' pre-season friendly against Newcastle United in Seoul on Sunday. "I think it was one of the most difficult decisions I've ever made in my football career. Playing football and being with one team for 10 years is something I am very proud of, but I think I gave my all to the team every single day. "I did my best on the field and off the field, and by winning the Europa League, I thought I'd done everything I could and achieved. That was probably the biggest reason (why I decided to leave the team)." Son has made 454 appearances for Spurs and scored 173 goals. He won the Premier League Golden Boot in the 2021-22 season. "I was so grateful that the team helped me a lot with this decision and respected my choice," he added. "It was my favourite place for 10 years, and it was the place where I grew a lot as a football player and a person, so I have a very grateful heart."

Son Heung-min targeting ‘fresh challenge' as he announces Tottenham departure
Tottenham captain Son Heung-min has revealed he will leave the club this summer. Son has spent the last decade at Spurs and achieved his goal of silverware in May when he helped the Premier League team to Europa League success with a 1-0 victory over Manchester United. It ended a 17-year trophy drought for the club and South Korea captain Son explained his decision to target a 'fresh challenge' during a press conference in his home country ahead of Tottenham's pre-season friendly with Newcastle on Sunday. After Spurs arrived in Seoul on Friday, Son – following a remarkable 454 appearances and 173 goals for the north London club – confirmed his desire to depart this summer, with MLS outfit Los Angeles FC leading the race for his signature, the PA news agency understands. Heung-Min Son has announced his intention to leave the Club at a press conference alongside Thomas Frank in Seoul. — Tottenham Hotspur (@SpursOfficial) August 2, 2025 Son told a press conference: 'Before we start, I wanted to say I have decided to leave the club this summer. 'Respectfully, the club is helping me with this decision. 'It was the most difficult decision I have made in my career, such amazing memories. It was so hard to make this decision. He continued: 'I need a new environment to push myself. I need a little bit of change – 10 years is a long time. 'I came to north London as a kid, 23-years-old, such a young age. I leave the club as a grown man, a very proud man. 'I want to say thanks to all the Spurs fans for giving me so much love. I hope the goodbye is also good timing and this is the right time to make that decision. I hope everyone can accept and respect that.' New Tottenham head coach Frank confirmed Son would start and be captain in Sunday's friendly with Newcastle at Seoul's World Cup Stadium. It could be Son's final appearance for Spurs, despite the UEFA Super Cup fixture with Paris St Germain in Udine on the horizon on August 13. Frank said: 'It's very clear that Sonny will start and lead the team out as captain. If that is the last game for Sonny, what a place to do it here in front of his home fans. It could be a beautiful ending.' Son joined Tottenham in 2015 from Bayer Leverkusen and after a tricky debut campaign, he quickly became a fan favourite and subsequently a modern-day Premier League great due to his consistency and personality, clinching the golden boot award in the 2022-23 season, but he is now set to exit after 10 years in north London.
