Woman who lost 20 kg shares 10 surprising foods she completely cut out to lose weight: Breakfast cereals to granola bars

Hindustan Times03-06-2025
Struggling to lose weight despite eating healthy and working out? Sometimes, it's not just about what you add to your plate but what you take off it. Nutritionist Ruchi Sharma shared in her May 28 Instagram post the top 10 foods she stopped eating to lose 20 kg and how these changes helped her feel lighter, healthier and more in control.
"Losing weight wasn't just about sweating in the gym or hitting 10k steps daily. Most people focus on what to add, but what you remove matters just as much," says Ruchi. 1. Flavoured coffee drinks: What Ruchi once considered a go-to "treat" actually contained more sugar than a doughnut.
2. Breakfast cereals: Even the so-called "healthy" options caused her cravings to spike well before noon.
3. Packaged juices: She thought they were a vitamin boost but realised they were just liquid sugar in disguise.
4. Granola bars: Essentially candy wrapped up with a nutrition label, offering little real benefit.
5. Low-fat packaged foods: Removing fat often meant adding artificial ingredients and preservatives she wanted to avoid.
6. Naan and white bread: Instead of feeling full and satisfied, these left her hungrier and more tempted to snack.
7. Bottled sauces and dressings: A hidden sugar trap she had never considered before, which added unnecessary calories.
8. "Healthy" late-night snacks: Even protein bars and nuts can add up quickly when eaten mindlessly.
9. Fast food salads: Loaded with creamy dressings, these were often worse for the diet than a burger.
10. Energy drinks: They disrupt sleep, appetite, and ultimately hinder fat loss progress.
"Once I cut these, my body finally started responding. No more energy crashes. No more feeling "starved" on a diet. Just steady, effortless fat loss. Now, I don't just "eat clean." I eat strategically. Instead of forcing myself to eat less, I focused on removing the foods that kept me: stuck, triggered cravings, spiked my blood sugar, or made me feel sluggish. So, if you're struggling to lose weight despite doing everything "right," start by auditing your plate. You might be shocked at what's sneaking into your diet.

Dietician suggests 3 hacks to control your cravings While life might get busy, with the right habits, we can still continue with our fat loss journeys. (Freepik) 'How to stay on track with fat loss when life gets busy. Let's be honest, life isn't going to slow down. So, the key is learning how to stay consistent through the chaos,' she wrote. Here are 5 tips she suggested: Plan your weight loss meals in advance.(Shutterstock) 1. Lower your expectations, not your standards Some days it's not the perfect workout or 10/10 nutrition. It's a 20-min walk, a high-protein wrap, and water. That still counts. 2. Have go-to meals ready Keep 2–3 quick meals in rotation you can make without thinking. (E.g. protein toast + eggs, stir-fry, high-protein pasta bowl) 3. Stop aiming for perfect Missing 1 workout or eating a slice of cake isn't a failure. What you do next matters way more than what just happened. 4. Track less, plan more When time is tight, following a meal plan takes decision fatigue off your plate. 5. Remind yourself why you started You don't need motivation every day — you need a reason to keep showing up. In an earlier interview with HT Lifestyle, Dr Jaison Paul Sharma, MBBS, MD (Internal Medicine) - consultant diabetologist at Sharma Hospital in Garhdiwala suggested, 'Focus on whole, unprocessed, fibre-rich foods while reducing intake of ultra-processed carbohydrates and sugary beverages.' he also added that sleep is an underrated weight loss habit which should be taken more seriously. 'Sleep is another powerful metabolic lever; poor sleep raises ghrelin and cortisol levels, promoting fat gain. Aim for 7–9 hours of quality sleep per night,' he added. Swiss woman uses AI to lose 7 kg: 'Instead of complicated apps I just sent a voice message to ChatGPT each morning'

Cristina Gheiceanu, a Swiss content creator who 'lost 7 kg using ChatGPT', shared her success story on Instagram in a May 15 post. Woman says she lost 15 kg with 4 prompts that helped her go from 100 to 83 kg Cristina Gheiceanu shared details of her weight loss journey using ChatGPT on Instagram. (Instagram/ Cristina Gheiceanu) Determine your calorie deficit In her post, titled 'How I lost 7 kg with ChatGPT', Cristina gave a glimpse of what her body looked like 5 months ago. In the video, she 'showed exactly' how she used the AI-powered tool to help her her decide her breakfast, keeping her weight loss goals in mind. She said, 'I just start my day with a voice note: 'Hey it is a new day, let's start with 1900 calories'. Then I say what I ate. Because I have been using it for a while, ChatGPT already knows the yoghurt I use, and the protein, fibre, calories it has. When I first started, I had to tell those things, but now ChatGPT remembers.' Cristina added, 'Honestly, it made the whole process feel easy. No calorie counting in my head, no stress – and when I hit my number (daily calorie intake), I just stop. It never felt like a diet, and that is what made it work.' Track your food intake Cristina wrote in her caption, 'At first, ChatGPT helped me figure out my calorie deficit and maintenance level, because you will need a calorie deficit if you want to lose weight. But what really changed everything was using it for daily tracking. Instead of using complicated apps, I just sent a voice message to ChatGPT each morning: what I ate, how many calories I wanted to eat that day — and it did all the work.' Sharing her experience, she added, 'In the beginning, I had to tell it the calories, protein, and fibre in the foods I use. Next time it remembered everything, so I was just telling it to add my yoghurt or my bread. It knew how many calories or protein are in that yoghurt or bread. I kept using the same chat, so it became faster and easier every day. The best part? I asked for everything in a table — so I could clearly see my calories, protein, and fibre at a glance. And if I was missing something, I'd just send a photo of my fridge and get suggestions. It made tracking simple, intuitive, and enjoyable. I eat intuitively, so I don't use it so often, but in the calorie deficit and first month of maintenance, it made all the difference.'
