Wong Ling Ching secures bronze for Malaysia in World University Games
Ling Ching was the only Malaysian shuttler to reach the semi-finals and put up a strong fight but lost to Thailand's Tidapron Kleebyeesun 16-14, 5-15, 13-15 in Rhine-Ruhr, Germany on Friday (July 25).
The 21-year-old had earlier secured her spot in the last four by defeating India's Devika Sihag 17-15, 15-11.
In the men's singles, Eogene Ewe missed out on a medal after losing 13-15, 14-16 to Taiwan's Ting Yen-chen in the quarter-finals.
The doubles events were disappointing, with Fazriq Razif-Bryan Goonting, Liew Xun-Wee Yee Hern (men's doubles), Vanee Gobi-Clarissa San, Lee Xin Jie-Low Yeen Yuen (women's doubles), Liew Xun-Vanee, and Yee Hern-Clarissa (mixed doubles) all losing in the early rounds.
In the mixed team event, Malaysia failed to secure a medal after a 2-3 loss to India in the quarter-finals.

GENTING HIGHLANDS: Malaysia clinched third place at the 15th Genting World Lion Dance Championship, held at the Arena of Stars. The Petaling Jaya Catholic High School Alumni Association Dragon and Lion Dance Troupe, making their debut, scored 9.59 points to secure the podium finish. 'Having three Malaysian teams in the finals is a major accomplishment that enhances our global reputation,' he said. Singapore dominated the event, with Yi Mei Athletic Association's B Team winning first place (9.78 points) and their A Team securing second (9.66 points). They took home USD18,000 and USD10,000, respectively. Spencer Lee of Resorts World Genting highlighted the event's evolution, noting the creative use of props and storytelling. 'Lion dance is now both a cultural performance and a high-stamina sport. We hope it becomes an international event, possibly in the SEA or Asian Games,' he said. WUG 2025: Malaysia's 4x100m men's finish last in final
BOCHUM: A risky move by the national men's 4x100 metre (m) quartet did not work out after finishing last in the final of the Rhine-Ruhr World University Games (WUG) 2025 at Lohrheidestadion here, tonight Malaysia time. In the highlight race, which was also the closing event of athletics competition, the national quartet made a change in strategy by bringing in Mohamad Raimi Mustaffa Kamal to team up with Pengiran Aidil Auf Hajam, Mohammad Thaqif Mohammad Hisham and Muhammad Azeem Mohd Fahmi. However, the strategy did not give the expected result after they recorded a time of 40.19 seconds (s), which was slower than the 39.83s recorded in the first round early this morning Malaysia time. For the record, in the national quartet's tactical move, Aliff Iman Mohd Fahimi was to compete in the first round while Mohamad Raimi would be fielded in the final. 'This is one of the tactics we have discussed that will involve some risks, at least to receive the baton at the end of the zone because we know that's the only way how we want to utilise and maximise the ability of each runner. The championship saw nine teams from six countries - Malaysia, Singapore, Japan, Myanmar, China and Taiwan - vie for the championship title in the final. Malaysia, through the maiden participation of the Petaling Jaya Catholic High School Alumni Association Dragon and Lion Dance Troupe, earned 9.59 points to be placed third and took home USD6,000 cash, a trophy and medals presented by Transport Minister Anthony Loke. Michael Oh Head, one of the troupe's lion dancers, said that although there was some pressure representing Malaysia, the team gave their best performance. 'We will continue to train until we achieve better results and improved performances. We also hope to be given more opportunities to represent Malaysia and achieve success, thus bringing glory to the country,' he told Bernama after the prize-giving ceremony. Two other Malaysian teams - Kwong Ngai Lion Dance and Malaysia Xuan Long Dragon and Lion Dance Rawang Selangor - also made it to the final. The Kwong Ngai Lion Dance troupe finished seventh with 8.89 points, while the team from Rawang had to withdraw after one of its members sustained a leg injury.
