BTS agency HYBE raided by S. Korean police over founder's alleged RM600m IPO fraud
'We are conducting a search and seizure at HYBE's headquarters in Yongsan District,' the Financial Crimes Investigation Unit of the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency said in a brief statement.
Bang, the mastermind behind BTS, is under investigation over allegations that he misled early investors to reap illicit profits from the company's 2020 initial public offering.
He is accused of gaining around 200 billion won (approximately RM616,000) through the process, according to local reports.
HYBE has denied Bang committed any wrongdoing.
'We will dutifully clarify that the listing at the time was carried out in compliance with all relevant laws and regulations,' the company said in a statement in early July, pledging 'active cooperation' with authorities to get to the bottom of the case.
The investigation comes as all seven BTS members complete their mandatory military service and prepare for a comeback next year.
HYBE announced earlier this month that a new album and world tour were scheduled for 2026.
BTS, known for championing progressive causes, holds the record as the most-streamed group on Spotify and became the first K-pop act to top both the Billboard 200 and Billboard Artist 100 charts in the US.
Before their military service, BTS generated more than 5.5 trillion won (RM16.9 billion) in yearly economic impact, according to the Korea Culture and Tourism Institute.
That accounts for roughly 0.2 per cent of South Korea's total GDP, according to official data. — AFP

Police: Outdated CCTV at Dr Mahathir's grandson's home offered little help; nearby footage now under review in RM1.8m burglary
KUALA LUMPUR, July 28 — The police will examine the closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage from surrounding areas near the residence of former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad's grandson in Bukit Ledang, here, which was reportedly broken into last Wednesday. Acting Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Mohamed Usuf Jan Mohamad said the CCTV system at the residence itself was of limited use as it only retains footage for 24 hours, making it difficult to aid in the ongoing investigation. 'The CCTV system at the house was installed in the 1990s and has limited storage capacity,' he told a press conference today. 'The incident is believed to have occurred more than 24 hours after the police report was made by the owner of the house, which meant the footage had already been overwritten,' he told a press conference here today. According to Mohamed Usuf, the house is an old house that is rarely visited by Dr Mahathir's grandchildren. 'So far, the police have recorded statements from three individuals, namely Dr Mahathir's grandson, a security guard and a maid. The police are also analysing the evidence received, including fingerprints, and this may take some time,' he said. According to reports, the residence belonging to the former Prime Minister's grandson was broken into, resulting in the victim losing RM1.8 million worth of jewellery. It is understood that the incident was discovered by the maid at 3pm last Wednesday after she found the gate at the back of the house had been cut and her employer's room was ransacked. When asked about the case involving singer Shila Amzah, who claimed to have been verbally attacked by another singer, he said the police would record statements from two more witnesses to complete the investigation paper. — Bernama

Tesla picks Samsung to make next-gen AI6 chips under US$16.5b deal, says Musk
SEOUL, July 28 — Tesla CEO Elon Musk said Monday that tech giant Samsung Electronics will provide his company with its next-generation AI6 chips, following the South Korean firm's announcement of a US$16.5 billion (RM69.7 billion) deal. Samsung said Monday it had secured an eight-year agreement, without naming the client, describing it only as a 'major global company' in a regulatory filing. Under the deal, the partnership — effective from last Thursday — runs through the end of 2033. 'Samsung's giant new Texas fab will be dedicated to making Tesla's next-generation AI6 chip. The strategic importance of this is hard to overstate,' Musk said on X. 'Samsung agreed to allow Tesla to assist in maximizing manufacturing efficiency,' he added, calling it a 'critical point' in striking the deal. 'I will walk the line personally to accelerate the pace of progress,' he said, noting Samsung's Texas plant was 'conveniently located not far from my house'. The deal represents about 7.6 percent of Samsung's projected annual sales for 2024, the company said. It declined to confirm the client was Tesla, even after Musk's message, citing confidentiality. The agreement is expected to provide a major boost to Samsung, which has faced headwinds in its foundry business, lagging rivals SK hynix and Taiwan's TSMC in the race for cutting-edge artificial intelligence chips. Samsung Electronics is the flagship unit of South Korea's Samsung Group, by far the largest of the family-run conglomerates that dominate Asia's fourth-largest economy.
