No relief for AAP MLA in attempt to murder case; to move Gujarat High Court for bail
Chaitar's advocates have said that the legislator will now move the Gujarat High Court for bail application.
Considering the arguments put forth by Public Prosecutor Jitendrasinh Gohil that Chaitar had been granted conditional bail in 2024 in a November 2023 FIR filed against him in an alleged case of assault of forest officers, the court rejected his bail plea on Monday.
Gohil had argued that Chaitar was granted conditional bail on the condition that he would not commit such a crime again. However, he has been booked in an FIR for the July 5 incident.
It was alleged that during the incident, Chaitar used unparliamentary language for a female leader present in the room.
Additional Sessions Judge AV Hirpara, in the order, said, 'Earlier too, (Chaitar) has been booked in 18 cases and sent to jail under PASA and even been sentenced to six months imprisonment in another case of physical assault. When he was let out on probation, he committed another crime, which has been brought on record… But the court orders and arguments presented by the lawyer of (Chaitar) are not substantiating his case… The audio video transcript submitted by the investigating officer, as well as the footage shown, indicates that government property and offices will be vandalised if he is not granted bail. It does not appear judicious to consider the application of the (Chaitar) at this stage…'
While the rejection of the bail plea means that Chaitar has returned to judicial custody, his advocate Suresh Joshi said, 'The entire argument of the prosecution against the bail plea was conducted with reliance on a video that was made viral by a local sarpanch to state that the arrest of Chaitar Vasava is an injustice to the tribal community. But, it seems to have gone against us. Since the court did not accept the submissions we made, we will move the High Court.'

AAP says demolition notices issued to slum clusters in Shalimar Bagh, Shahdara; slams BJP
At a press conference, Leader of Opposition Atishi said, 'The BJP distributed cards to slum dwellers promising 'Jahan jhuggi, wahin makaan'. Even Prime Minister Narendra Modi assured that no slum would be razed without alternative housing. Yet, within six months, slums have been demolished across the city. Now, in Chief Minister Rekha Gupta's own constituency, notices have been served to two slum areas.' According to Atishi, residents of Indira Camp in Shalimar Bagh and Lalbagh in Shahdara — both established with allotment cards in 1990 — have been asked to vacate their homes within 15 days. Lalbagh slums are scheduled for demolition on July 31. There was no immediate response available from the BJP or the Delhi government to the allegations. New Delhi, Jul 25 (PTI) The AAP on Friday claimed that demolition notices have been issued to slum clusters in Shalimar Bagh and Shahdara here, and accused the BJP-led Delhi government of betraying the city's poor and reneging on its poll promises. 'No government touched these slums for 35 years. But this BJP government is bulldozing them,' she said. 'Don't underestimate the power of the poor. They run this city and they can halt it,' she said. AAP leader and former MLA from Shalimar Bagh Vandana Kumari claimed the notice was served on July 23, in the same area where CM Gupta resides. 'This is an anti-poor policy. AAP has never demolished any slum without first providing permanent housing,' she said, vowing to resist the move 'with full force'. PTI MHS DV DV This report is auto-generated from PTI news service. Days after he was elected to the post, Mohali MLA and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Kulwant Singh, 63, Friday resigned as the secretary of the Punjab Cricket Association (PCA). Bhatinda hotelier Amarjit Singh Mehta, father of AAP leader Padamjit Mehta, was elected PCA president. 'Yes, I have resigned from the post of PCA secretary. As an MLA, I had various other works… I do every task with full commitment, and felt I could not do justice to this new role. Hence… I resigned today,' Singh told The Indian Express. Following the recent poll, AAP state general secretary Deepak Bali, who is also an advisor to the Punjab Heritage and Tourism Board, was unanimously elected PCA vice-president. Sunil Gupta, the incumbent PCA treasurer and vice-chairman of the Punjab Economic Policy and Planning Board (Cabinet minister rank) was unanimously elected as the treasurer. Siddhant Sharma was unanimously elected as the joint secretary. Kulwant Singh's political journey began in 1995 when he represented Ward 21 in the Mohali Municipal Council elections and served as senior vice-president of the council. He went on to become the Mohali mayor before unsuccessfully fighting the Lok Sabha elections from Fatehgarh Sahib as an SAD-BJP candidate in 2014. In March 2022, Singh won the Assembly polls from SAS Nagar constituency on an AAP ticket, defeating Congress leader Balbir Singh Sidhu by 34,097 votes. Last month, Dilsher Khanna resigned from the post of PCA secretary. Khanna, 33, an alumnus of Doon School and Delhi University and a certified pilot, was elected to the post in 2022 when former cricketer Gulzar Inder Singh Chahal was elected as PCA president. Chahal resigned four months later amid reports of irregularities during his term coming to the fore. Former cricketer and Rajya Sabha MP Harbhajan Singh too raised accusations against Chahal. Mehta was elected as PCA's new president in February 2023. In 2017, industrialist Rajinder Gupta was elected as PCA chief and R P Singla won as secretary before Gupta was re-elected to the post in 2019 with advocate and former cricketer Puneet Bali being elected secretary. Before his nomination in 2019, Gupta had offered to resign, but was chosen as PCA president months later. Gupta resigned from the post in 2022, after which Chahal was elected as PCA chief. There is also a ruling which mandates a three-year cooling-off period after two consecutive terms of three years each. Nitin Sharma is an Assistant Editor with the sports team of The Indian Express.
