No relief for AAP MLA in attempt to murder case; to move Gujarat High Court for bail

Indian Express14-07-2025
Dediapada MLA Chaitar Vasava will continue to stay in judicial custody as the Narmada Sessions Court on Monday rejected the regular bail plea filed by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader in the alleged case of attempt to murder a BJP leader during a brawl in the Sagbara Prant Office on July 5.
Chaitar's advocates have said that the legislator will now move the Gujarat High Court for bail application.
Considering the arguments put forth by Public Prosecutor Jitendrasinh Gohil that Chaitar had been granted conditional bail in 2024 in a November 2023 FIR filed against him in an alleged case of assault of forest officers, the court rejected his bail plea on Monday.
Gohil had argued that Chaitar was granted conditional bail on the condition that he would not commit such a crime again. However, he has been booked in an FIR for the July 5 incident.
It was alleged that during the incident, Chaitar used unparliamentary language for a female leader present in the room.
Additional Sessions Judge AV Hirpara, in the order, said, 'Earlier too, (Chaitar) has been booked in 18 cases and sent to jail under PASA and even been sentenced to six months imprisonment in another case of physical assault. When he was let out on probation, he committed another crime, which has been brought on record… But the court orders and arguments presented by the lawyer of (Chaitar) are not substantiating his case… The audio video transcript submitted by the investigating officer, as well as the footage shown, indicates that government property and offices will be vandalised if he is not granted bail. It does not appear judicious to consider the application of the (Chaitar) at this stage…'
While the rejection of the bail plea means that Chaitar has returned to judicial custody, his advocate Suresh Joshi said, 'The entire argument of the prosecution against the bail plea was conducted with reliance on a video that was made viral by a local sarpanch to state that the arrest of Chaitar Vasava is an injustice to the tribal community. But, it seems to have gone against us. Since the court did not accept the submissions we made, we will move the High Court.'

Sights set on 2027 Gujarat polls, AAP sends cadres from Punjab

1 2 Jalandhar: The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has sent its leaders and office-bearers from Punjab to Gujarat to work at the ground level and expand its base there. Although AAP workers have been going from Punjab to other states, including Delhi, Haryana and Gujarat, especially during electioneering, this time they were assigned the task of expanding the party's footprint in Gujarat two years ahead of the 2027 assembly election. Some AAP leaders and workers who have already reached the western state have posted pictures of themselves working in Gujarat or informing local supporters that they would be away in Gujarat. Some of these people include individuals who hold public offices in Punjab. Punjab Agri Export Corporation chairman Mangal Singh Bassi has been posting on his Facebook account pictures of his meetings with AAP functionaries and workers with the title 'Mission Gujarat AAP Zindabad'. Former Punjab SC Commission member and Jalandhar's Rampur village sarpanch Prabh Dyal posted on his Facebook account that he was assigned duty at Ahmedabad, so he would be away for 10-12 days. AAP functionaries from other districts have also been posting pictures from Gujarat. Having expanded its organisational structure in Punjab and created different wings, AAP has the scope for adjusting active workers to different posts from local to state level. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like No annual fees for life UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo It is learnt that most such appointees were picked for duties in Gujarat. The assembly election in Gujarat are expected to be held in Dec 2027, nine to ten months after Punjab. This seems akin to its earlier model implemented in Punjab when observers and several other party workers from other states, available with the party's central leadership in Delhi, were assigned duties in Punjab, especially from 2015 to the 2017 assembly election and then almost a year ahead of the 2022 assembly elections. Though Congress is the main opposition party in Gujarat, AAP supremo Arvind Kejriwal has been trying to project his party as the main challenger to BJP there. At the beginning of this month, while addressing a party gathering in Ahmedabad, Kejriwal alleged a secret pact between Congress and BJP. "They meet in secret due to fear of society. Society won't accept their marriage. Be cautious of them, they are dangerous," he said. He made it clear that AAP was no longer a part of the INDIA bloc and emphasised it was limited to the 2024 parliament polls only. Now, also ahead of the monsoon session of Parliament, AAP made it clear it had nothing to do with the opposition bloc. In the second week of this month, Punjab chief minister Bhagwant Mann ridiculed Prime Minister Narendra Modi's foreign visits and then called home minister Amit Shah "tadipaar", which made it an AAP versus BJP equation in Punjab, at the level of the narrative.

Will request Haryana govt. to hand over control of ITO Barrage: Parvesh

The Hindu Bureau New Delhi Irrigation and Flood Control Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh on Wednesday said the Delhi government will formally ask Haryana to hand over control of the ITO barrage, which he termed 'vital' to the Capital's flood response. The Minister cited the 2023 Delhi floods, which he said were worsened by the barrage's 'malfunctioning' gates, and stressed the need for the national capital to have 'full authority to act swiftly during emergencies' .'I'll take up this matter personally to ensure Delhi's safety is not compromised,' Mr. Singh said. In July 2023, Delhi was submerged by the most severe floods in its history, caused by rising waters in the Yamuna river .On Wednesday, Yamuna's level in Delhi hovered just below the 'warning mark' of 204.5 metres. At 10 a.m., it was recorded at 204.13 metres. By 8 p.m., the level had receded slightly to 204.08 metres. According to an official, the 'release of water from Hathnikund barrage in Haryana had decreased by evening, and the water level in Delhi is also expected to fall'. Meanwhile, heavy rain in parts of the city in the morning caused widespread waterlogging and traffic disruptions. Affected areas included Greater Kailash, Pul Prahladpur, Zakhira underpass, Moti Nagar, Seelampur, Laxmi Nagar, G.T. Road, Mehrauli-Badarpur Road, and the DTC depot in Nand Nagri. Notably, no stagnant water was reported from the underpass in central Delhi's Minto Bridge, a waterlogging hotspot. AAP takes on govt. AAP Delhi president Saurabh Bharadwaj posted a video on X, showing a woman rowing a boat on a flooded street, with the comment: 'Free water sports offered by the four-engine government.' 'The government does not run this boat service, but we salute the special contribution of the BJP's Delhi government,' he said, hitting out at the ruling party. AAP also welcomed the announcement by Mr. Singh. 'It is good to see better sense prevailing. The BJP can see the facts clearly,' it said. The party added that during 2023, when it was in power in Delhi, BJP-ruled Haryana 'did not open the gates of the ITO barrage due to poor maintenance. That was the real cause of the flooding in Delhi'. A day earlier, Education Minister Ashish Sood had, while referring to waterlogging incidents, alleged that '10 years of corruption by AAP, and 15 years of negligence by the Congress government earlier, have led to this situation in the national capital'.

Gujarat Confidential: ‘Right' Prasad

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has awarded the 'Eat Right Prasad' certificate to mohanthal prasad provided to devotees by the Ambaji Temple trust. Stating that it is a matter of pride for Gujarat, the state government attributed the 'achievement' to the 'quality and cleanliness' of the prasad provided to devotees by the temple trust and the disciplined functioning of the temple. 'This success has been achieved under the guidance and leadership of Shree Arasuri Ambaji Mata Devasthan Trust and Additional Collector Kaushik Modi,' it stated. In 2023, the mohanthal prasad, made of gram flour, ghee and sugar, landed in controversy and was replaced by chikki, citing longer shelf life and reports of alleged adulteration that followed. The Drugs Control Administration (FDCA) also seized ghee from the firm, which was given the contract to make the prasad. 'Eat Right Prasad' certificate is awarded to religious places, which follows strict standards of food safety, hygiene and quality while preparing and distributing prasad. Councillors' Protest Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) councillors, during a general board meeting of the Surat Municipal Corporation on Tuesday, protested against the issue of creek floods in the city by showing up in mud-soaked clothes. The councillors, including Leader of Opposition Payal Sakariya, also raised slogans against the ruling BJP, blaming the party for the situation in Surat. AAP councillor Dharmesh Bhanderi said, 'Our motive behind attending the general board meeting in mud-soaked clothes is to register our protest against the ruling BJP, as they have failed to guard Surat against creek floods. Surat witnesses creek floods every year, and the ruling party has no solution. The flood-affected people have to shift from their houses to other places.'
