MLS All-Stars Appreciate Lionel Messi's Invaluable Impact On League

Forbesa day ago
Lionel Messi has taken MLS by storm since joining Inter Miami CF in July 2023.
While Inter Miami CF star Lionel Messi and teammate Jordi Alba were MIA for the 2025 MLS All-Star Game, that doesn't mean the eight-time Ballon d'Or winner's invaluable impact wasn't felt and appreciated by fans, media and players around Austin this week.
Messi and Alba, both of whom were selected for the match against LigaMX all-stars at Q2 Stadium but were last-minute absences, have had a profound effect—along with teammates Luis Suárez and Sergio Busquets—on the validity and visibility of the league as it celebrates its 30th season.
'It's unexplanatory. He brings so much to the league,' Orlando City SC defender Alex Freeman said. 'He brings more views and more people looking to MLS. We've worked so hard for it and for someone like Messi to come here and help us to do that and help us grow the league is just so important for us and we're grateful for that.'
Since joining Inter Miami CF from PSG in July 2023, Messi, ranked No. 5 on The World's Highest-Paid Athletes 2025 list by Forbes, made an immediate impact on and off the field. He scored the game-winning free kick against Cruz Azul in his first appearance as he helped guide Inter Miami to the inaugural Leagues Cup trophy.
Ticket sales skyrocketed as cities and clubs around the U.S. and Canada welcomed the Argentine captain with open arms, regardless of what impending Messi magic would terrorize them on the field. Messi's No. 10 jersey quickly became the league's top-selling jersey as MLS and league-wide sponsor adidas grappled with backorders due to unprecedented demand.
Sports Illustrated Stadium was a sea of Inter Miami pink and Argentina blue as Messi and Miami ... More played the New York Red Bulls on July 19.
As if that wasn't enough, Messi somehow bested his debut season's success in his sophomore campaign with a league-leading 36 goal contributions (20 goals/16 assists) to win the 2024 MLS MVP. Despite playing just 19 matches, Messi skyrocketed Inter Miami to the Supporters' Shield while setting a league record for most points in a single season.
'It's great for all of us. We all benefit from it,' Nashville SC forward Hany Mukhtar said. 'His first tournament here in the U.S. was the Leagues Cup and we played them in the final. There was so much attention around that. It's great to see.
'If you bring the greatest here, the whole world is watching and that's good for all of us.'
Unsurprisingly, MLS continues to put all of its eggs into the Messi basket, knowing his time in the league could be coming to an end.
Messi signed a two-and-a-half-year contract with Inter Miami in 2023 that runs through the 2025 season. ESPN reported in early July that sources say contract negotiations to extend Messi in Miami are ongoing, though he's been linked to other clubs including a big-money move to Saudi Arabia as well as former FC Barcelona teammate Cesc Fàbregas recently expressing interest to bring Messi to Como, the Serie A club he currently manages.
Lionel Messi MLS All-Star jerseys were available to purchase in Austin this week.
Regardless of how much longer Messi stays in the U.S. is to be seen, but that doesn't mean we won't be seeing as much of him as possible until then. MLS announced Thursday the return—and expansion—of 'Player Spotlight: Messi,' a special live stream experience offering fans an all-Messi match view exclusively on TikTok Live.
Last season's debut of 'Player Spotlight: Messi' during Inter Miami's playoff opener drew more than 6.4 million live views across MLS and Inter Miami TikTok channels, setting the record for the largest live audience for a U.S. sports event on the platform.
This year's spotlight will highlight Messi across four matches beginning with Miami's Leagues Cup opener against Necaxa on August 2.
'He came in and changed the league, honestly,' Vancouver Whitecaps FC midfielder Sebastian Berhalter said. 'Who he is as a person and his ability, it's literally changed the league. … It would be great (if he extends), but he's also done so much already. Whatever he wants to do, I think everyone's understanding.
'He's already done so much for our league. He can do whatever he wants.'

Inter Miami owner Jorge Más on Lionel Messi, Jordi Alba suspensions: 'It's a bad rule, but it's a rule nonetheless'

Inter Miami managing owner Jorge Más said on Friday that the club disagrees with the decision by MLS to suspend Lionel Messi and Jordi Alba for one game after they both missed the 2025 MLS All-Star Game. 'It's a bad rule, but it's a rule nonetheless," Más told reporters, via Franco Panizo. Both Messi, 38, and Alba, 36, were voted into the All-Star Game but did not take part in any events earlier this week in Austin, Texas. According to ESPN's Lizzy Becherano, league officials and Inter Miami representatives held talks about whether both players would be available for Saturday's game. [Join or create a Yahoo Fantasy Football league for the 2025 NFL season] MLS rules state that players who miss the All-Star Game without approval from the league are subject to discipline. The league announced on Friday that the two Inter Miami stars would be "unavailable" for the game against FC Cincinnati. The league has enforced this policy before after former LA Galaxy star Zlatan Ibrahimović was suspended one game when he missed the 2018 All-Star Game against Serie A side Juventus. 'I know Lionel Messi loves this league. I don't think there's a player — or anyone — who has done more for Major League Soccer than Messi," MLS Commissioner Don Garber said in a statement. "I fully understand, respect, and admire his commitment to Inter Miami, and I respect his decision. 'Unfortunately, we have a long-standing policy regarding participation in the All-Star Game, and we had to enforce it. It was a very difficult decision. That said, we're going to take a hard look at the policy moving forward. I'm committed to working with our players to determine how the rule should evolve.' Más said that it was the club's decision to keep Messi and Alba home and he hopes MLS examines the rule in the future. 'I think the punishment for the rule is, frankly, draconian," Más said. "I think the rule needs to be looked at." Messi, Alba upset with suspension When told that they would be unavailable for a key Eastern Conference clash against Cincinnati, Messi and Alba were not happy, according to Más. 'Their reaction was as expected. It was not a positive reaction," Más said. "They want to play and compete and win games. They don't understand the decision. They don't understand why not attending an exhibition match leads directly to a suspension.' Inter Miami has had a busy schedule, with nine matches between MLS play and the FIFA Club World Cup since June 14. Their previous three league games — two wins and a defeat — took place within seven days. Messi has played 90 minutes in each of Inter Miami's last nine matches. Alba exited Saturday's win over New York Red Bulls in the 84th minute with an injury, but had completed 90 minutes in the Herons' previous five games. Head coach Javier Mascherano said Friday that he hopes the league takes into account needed rest for players in the future. "What I think is that if they want to do this type of event, it's great to do it, and the truth is that it's great for the league," Mascherano said. "There shouldn't be a date in the schedule. It's crazy. We've been playing four of the last five games away. We've been playing four away. We've been playing practically every three days. "Stop for the weekend, the All-Star Game is played on the weekend, and we come back because after Wednesday, today, 48 hours after having played, there are teams that are going to play today, and it's not enough rest for the players either. So, the first thing we have to think about is that football belongs to the players. And if football belongs to the players, without players, it doesn't exist." Más echoed Mascherano's call for the need for player rest, noting that there are six MLS matches on Friday's schedule, two days after the All-Star Game. "That's not right. That's not right to the players," Más said. Inter Miami are 12-4-5 and sit fifth in the Eastern Conference through 21 games.

Rodrigo De Paul joins Inter Miami from Atletico Madrid

Inter Miami have completed the signing of midfielder Rodrigo De Paul from Atletico Madrid. The 31-year-old will link up with his Argentina international team-mate and close friend Lionel Messi – who is out of contract at the end of the 2025-26 season. The Athletic reported De Paul had been on the Miami's radar for some time but interest accelerated following Atletico's exit from the Club World Cup last month. 'Rodrigo de Paul is leaving Atletico Madrid and will continue his professional career at Inter Miami,' an Atletico statement read. Miami is yet to confirm official contract and transfer terms. The engine is on ⚙️🔥 — Inter Miami CF (@InterMiamiCF) July 25, 2025 As a high-profile, highly-paid player, De Paul's arrival raises questions over Sergio Busquets' long-term future in Miami. Busquets, Messi and Jordi Alba hold the three Designated Player (DP) spots on Miami's roster, and Alba signed a new deal earlier this year with Messi soon expected to follow suit. Advertisement Until a DP spot opens up, Miami are capped at paying a total of $850,000 in fee plus salary for De Paul in 2025. A DP spot could open up if Busquets retires midseason or De Paul could start on a more modest, cap-friendly salary now before negotiating a new deal in 2026. De Paul has been a first-team regular for Atletico since joining the Spanish club from Udinese in 2021. The midfielder helped Argentina win the World Cup in 2022, while he was also a part of their Copa America victories in 2021 and 2024. He featured in all but four of Atletico's La Liga matches last season, as they secured a third-place finish. He also played in each of his side's Club World Cup matches this summer prior to their group-stage exit. De Paul has recorded 14 goals and 26 assists in 187 appearances for Simeone's side, setting up 10 goals in 53 matches during the 2024-25 campaign. Ahead of the World Cup in 2022, De Paul said he is close friends with Messi, and the manner in which he plays for Argentina often complements the Miami forward. Speaking about his playing relationship with Messi, De Paul said in 2022 his aim is to 'make him run less' and give him 'more space to play with.' Simeone praised De Paul after he played a key role in Atletico winning eight consecutive La Liga matches from November to January during the 2024-25 season. 'He's an established footballer, a world champion,' he said. He's very important for us, with a lot of personality, and we hope he continues this way. We'll demand this from him because it's what we need.' After coming through the youth ranks at Racing Club, De Paul joined Valencia in 2014, before going back on loan to the Argentinian club in 2016. He made 44 appearances for Valencia before departing for Udinese later that year, where he went on to play 184 times.

Kayla Thornton out for the season with knee injury

Golden State Valkyries forward Kayla Thornton will be out for the rest of the season with a knee injury, the team announced Friday. She sustained the injury in practice earlier this week and underwent surgery Friday. The team said the procedure was successful. It's a tough loss for Golden State. Thornton is the Valkyries' leading scorer, averaging 14 points, seven rebounds and 1.5 assists this season. The veteran is in her 10th season in the WNBA and played in her first All-Star Game last weekend, becoming the expansion team's first All-Star. With Thornton at the helm, Golden State had been surprising the league. Before her exit, the Valkyries (10-12) were in playoff contention. They have led the league in attendance this season. Before being drafted by the Valkyries at the expansion draft last December, Thornton won the WNBA title with the New York Liberty and has previously played for the Dallas Wings and the Washington Mystics. ___ AP WNBA:
