Madras HC seeks Tamil Nadu's reply on plea against microchipping dogs
A division bench of Justices Senthilkumar Ramamoothy and T V Thamilselvi ordered the respondent authorities to file reply to the petition by June 20, and adjourned the hearing.
The petitioner had prayed for an interim injunction to restrain the state government authorities from proceeding with all tenders, contracts, construction, disbursement or implementation of animal birth control (ABC) projects in TN.
He noted that the state government has proceeded with the microchipping project by floating a tender at a cost of Rs 5.40 crore despite the fact that a writ petition challenging the constitutional validity of the Animal Birth Control Rules, 2023, is pending before the high court.

Man strangles grandmom overonline gamingaddiction
Jaipur: A 24-year-old man was arrested Thursday for strangling his 86-year-old grandmother to death in Sriganganagar after a year-long addiction to an online game left him heavily in debt. Identified as Manish Chugh, the man allegedly killed his grandmother in a fit of rage when she scolded him for playing games on his mobile phone. Police said Manish was playing an online game called 'Aviator' for the past year and lost nearly Rs 2 lakh in the process. "In order to repay the mounting debt, he took loans from relatives and borrowed through mobile apps. On July 24, after losing another Rs 15,000, he returned home angry and distressed. His grandmother, Draupadi Devi, reprimanded him again. In a fit of rage, he strangled her with a towel," said a police officer. To cover up the crime, Manish reportedly ransacked the house to make it appear as a robbery. "He stole Rs 18,000 in cash along with gold ornaments, including earrings and other jewellery, and then locked the house from outside before heading to work," the officer said. Later, he filed a complaint at Purani Abadi police station, claiming unknown robbers entered the house and murdered his grandmother. SP Amrita Duhan said that police began an investigation with support from the FSL and dog squad teams. Based on technical clues and local informants, police grew suspicious of Manish and took him into custody. During interrogation, he allegedly confessed to killing his grandmother and stealing from the house to repay his debts.

NEW DELHI: Within hours of President Trump announcing a 25% tariff on Indian exports to the US, the commerce department sought to comfort exporters while also nudging them to explore other markets. During consultations led by Rajesh Agarwal, special secretary in the commerce department, exporters suggested govt immediately come up with measures that would also boost sentiment. "There is low-hanging fruit govt can address immediately," said a source in an export promotion council. A senior govt official told TOI the commerce department was also seeking to speed up reforms for special economic zones, which would help exporters as well as boost capacity utilisation by making it easier to sell in the domestic tariff area (Indian territory outside SEZs). One of the recommendations from exporters was to immediately start the export promotion mission, announced in the Budget but yet to become operational. In fact, during a meeting with commerce & industry minister Piyush Goyal, some of the elements, including marketing support and assistance to deal with trade actions, were also discussed. Although the outlay is a little over Rs 4,000 crore for the current financial year, the department is hopeful of the allocation being increased. While only a handful of industry bodies have sent their inputs so far, interest subsidies are something several executives said were required to help exporters tide over the crisis as it would hurt orders in the short term and might create some cash flow issues as well. "There is also a need to process duty drawback claims and GST refunds for exporters faster to ensure adequate liquidity," said another executive with an export promotion body. Businesses have suggested an early bilateral trade agreement with the US will reduce disruption in the market, and are hoping for positive news during the next round of talks from Aug 25.

I-T 'survey' at Nuvama's premises on Jane St link

Business operations continue as usual. Sources said the survey pertains to the firm's role as a service provider to Jane Street, whose trading strategy came under Sebi scrutiny, triggering regulatory action and a penalty. Nuvama stated that the survey was conducted under Section 133A of the Income Tax Act, which provides for a limited, non-intrusive visit during business hours to inspect records and verify income, without any seizure powers. A survey is distinct from an income tax search (commonly called a raid), which is a coercive action under section 132 to seize undisclosed assets based on credible evidence of tax evasion. Nuvama Wealth Management served as Jane Street's on-ground trading partner in India, providing the client accounts and infrastructure through which the U.S. quant firm executed its derivatives strategy. On July 3, Sebi barred Jane Street from Indian markets and impounded over Rs 4,800 crore in alleged illegal gains.
